What are the chances I'll get stretch marks?

Currently pregnant with DC2, I was very lucky and didn't get a single stretch mark with DD. I had a fair sized bump but wouldn't have said I was massive, I gained about a stone and a half in total. I used palmers tummy butter every evening which I think helped, but I think the fact that I was 22 and had young stretchy skin helped massively!

I'm now 25, so still young, so if I aim to put on a similar amount of weight, am I in with a good chance of not getting stretch marks this time?

I know with subsequent pregnancies you do tend to gain weight and show much earlier, so I suppose I've got that working against me.

Anyone on here not get any stretch marks with DC1 then go on to get them in subsequent pregnancies?

It won't be a huge deal if I do get them, at the end of the day I won't be the first or last woman to get stretch marks, but if I can avoid them I will.

Just going to try to put on a weight at a steady rate and not go over the top, and keep my skin nice and moisturised.

Like I said I loved the palmers tummy butter and think it really helped, but it was a bit thick and sticky, can anyone reccomend any other products they think are great for preventing stretch marks?

Third pregnancy and zero stretch marks 👌🏼👌🏼37+2 and still none! I do think it’s to do with your skin type and if your lucky enough. I’m so glad I haven’t got any though,I’m not one of these “you’ve earnt them” I would be genuinely devastated xx

LucyLou19 · 02/09/2018 19:02

I have also used bottles and bottles of bio oil xx

SoyDora · 02/09/2018 19:03

None with DC1... used loads of bio oil.
Loads with DC2... put on the same amount of weight, also used loads of bio oil!

SnowOnTheSeine · 02/09/2018 19:06

I didn't use anything on my bump. Didn't get stretch marks with either pregnancy. I think it's more dépendant on skin type.

I think rubbing oils and lotions feels nice, and god knows I slathered myself in Clarins oil, bust lotions and potions every single day.

But in reality, assuming you don't massively pork out, stretch marks are just bad luck.

I have none, my sisters all got loads.

GreenMeerkat · 02/09/2018 19:14

It's mostly to do with the heredity of skin elasticity. I would say if you didn't get any in your first pregnancy it's unlikely you will get them again.

I got a few in my first but then nothing second and third.

SoyDora · 02/09/2018 19:16

That’s what I would have thought, but I know lots of people who got them in their second pregnancy and not their third (including me)

I've just had my first (I'm 32) and I didn't get a single stretch mark. I did apply an oil I bought at a baby show from around 26 weeks. Not sure if it helped, but it smelled nice! I do have a very noticeable linea negra though, and it hasn't faded at all yet! DD is 6 weeks old.

Thesearmsofmine · 02/09/2018 19:23

It’s luck of the draw. I used oils and creams during my pregnancies but my stomach resembled a road map.

Lazyi · 02/09/2018 19:27

No proof that creams work. Totally luck of the draw.

CarriesNecklace · 02/09/2018 19:29

Pre preg I was a slim size 8. I didn’t get any at all in my first, a couple of tiny ones around my belly button in second pregnancy at about 37 weeks (I was massive though, baby almost 11lbs) a few more in my third pregnancy again around belly button (was not as big for that one as I was for #2) and no new ones in fourth pregnancy (only got to 37 weeks and baby was smallest of all).

Sooooo I reckon it is to do with luck, genetics and I also wonder whether how much water you drink / how hydrated you are plays a part. FWIW they are all silvery and tiny now.

GrumpySausage · 02/09/2018 19:31

Never used any oils or creams and two kids later no stretch marks. 👍 Mum tum though but that's a different story

SydneyCarton · 02/09/2018 19:32

Three babies, no creams or lotions, no stretch marks. Not especially young either, 35, 37 and 40 when each one was born. I have stretch marks from puberty but none from pregnancy Confused

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 02/09/2018 19:57

Did your mum get them? That's meant to be a good predictor.

bonzo77 · 02/09/2018 20:16

3 babies aged 32,35 and 37. I used bio oil. No stretch marks. About 20lb weight gain each time. My bump was small each time (reduced fluid and small babies), and I delivered a little early (39, 35 and 37 weeks). I did get stretch marks on hips breasts and thighs during puberty (mostly gone) and my mum got stretch marks with her 3 pregnancies. Though I think she gained more weight, went post dates me had bigger babies.

So I’m 37+2 when I was at the hairdressers I started to get a pain in my right hip like someone stabbing me with a hot knife then it went numb? This has happened a few times now since Thursday and I’m on my gym ball now and it’s happening again? Anyone else had this? Xx

Nutkins24 · 02/09/2018 20:20

Watching. I didn’t have them 1st time so assumed I’d get away with it this time too, but my 1st was early so I’ve never experienced the real stretch at the end. My mum didn’t get them either.

nomorespaghetti · 02/09/2018 20:22

I didn't get any on my tummy in my first pregnancy, and now 35 weeks and still none, fingers crossed! Do find it a bit strange though, as when i was a teen i got loads of stretch marks on my boobs when they grew... also got them on my boobs again when my milk came in with DC1. I used any old moisturiser for the itching as my skin stretched.

LucyLou19 · 02/09/2018 20:22

Ignore that neeeee to be on new post 😂😂

Rainycloudyday · 02/09/2018 20:26

I didn't get any with first pregnancy. I'm now 35+4 with my second and fingers crossed, none yet. I'm a bit bigger this time and haven't been nearly as good at applying creams, but I agree I think it's genetics more than anything. My mum and sister had four babies between them and not a single stretch mark. We do, however, all shed hair horribly after birth so don't escape completely!

Lindy2 · 02/09/2018 20:28

I've had 2 pregnancies and disn't get any stretch marks with either. I used coco butter everyday as soon as I knew I was pregnant. I don't know if it helped or not.
I was surprised I didn't get any as I did get some on my boobs as a teenager.

Bellebp · 02/09/2018 20:30

Three pregnancies, all big babies, no stretch marks. I was a size 10 and in my late 30s for all 3. I think it’s hereditary as my mum didn’t get them either. I used clarins oil for my first, palmers for my second and nothing for my third.

Damnpeskykids · 02/09/2018 20:34

I didn't get any with my first 2 and then 1 in my 3rd pregnancy. My mum didn't get any in her 5 pregnancies, as other PPs said it comes down to genetics I think.

Perfectly1mperfect · 02/09/2018 20:45

I only got 1 very small stretch mark with my first pregnancy. With my second I got a few by 38 weeks, then I ended up going almost 2 weeks over and got quite a few between 38 and 42 weeks. They are totally faded now.

I think it's down to skin type, how much weight you put on and how big baby is. My second baby was bigger than my first by the time she made an appearance.

Ohhgreat · 02/09/2018 20:50

Conversely, I got stretchmarks with my first when I was 19, my second at 28 I got none! My mum also never got stretchmarks...
