Water wipes on a newborn

Does anyone know if you can use water wipes on a new born ? Or does anyone know what wipes are good to use on a new born. I cannot get on with cotton wool.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
ThirdChildFourthPile · 29/08/2018 22:53

Telegraph Article but it discuss the findings which were published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

In the same breath, my kids allergies are so severe he is seen at the Evalina in London who have the top allergies specialist. When I asked one of the consultants if I should do anything different with this baby they just said no.
Certainly didn't mention baby wipes...

OutPinked · 29/08/2018 22:54

I mean, when I had my three DC (youngest is 6), nobody warned against baby wipes at all and they never harmed my three in the slightest. I definitely couldn’t have been arsed with cotton wool to mop up marmite- grim.

I just used pampers sensitive wipes for them at first, switched to reusable ones as they got older and their poo solidified. I’ve bought a box of Aldi wipes this time and plan to use them!

Mrsramsayscat · 29/08/2018 23:07

Wash your children with water and cotton wool when changing them. Cheap, allergen free, fresh.

ThirdChildFourthPile · 29/08/2018 23:08

What are you supposed to clean them with when you're out though?
That one always floors me.

limitedscreentime · 29/08/2018 23:09

They stung like f* when I used them on myself so no, I’d never use them. Bought some cheeky wipes. Never had baby rash.
Occasional redness sorted by metatanium cream.

Mrstobe90 · 30/08/2018 01:05

I've only ever used normal baby wipes on my daughter and (touch wood) to this day, she's never had nappy rash. She's now 6 months x

Daisy2990 · 30/08/2018 09:54

We always found Water Wipes to be ridiculously wet. Sometimes you'd pull one out and you'd get a massive soggy wad of them with water running off them onto the floor. Maybe we got a bad batch, but they didn't seem right to me. Since settled on Huggies Pure and had no issues, but would prefer it if they were biodegradable.

toothtruth · 30/08/2018 09:57

I used just cotton wool for the first two months.
Now I use those water wipes but also take cotton wool to dry. I think the redness can be caused by bum still being wet not by the wipes themselves. So if you do use them from the start just take something along to dry babies bum before you put the nappy back on.

toothtruth · 30/08/2018 10:00

oh and re using cotton wool whilst out. Its actually quite easy as most changing areas have a hot tap for getting warm water on the cotton wool. And if you are not changing in a changing area I just used to have an emergency bottle of water with me for wetting the cotton wool. Then the used cotton wool just goes in the nappy bag with the dirty nappy.

TubeTop · 30/08/2018 10:03

Water wipes fine but expensive.

My 7 month old dd gets a spotty bum from pampers wipes and a sore bum from Spanish baby wipes on holiday.

Sainsbury's little ones sensitive wipes are best for her.

rubyroot · 30/08/2018 10:06

At eight months I’m still on cotton wool pads- love them! I must be the only one... water wipes when he does a pooh tho! There’s so many chemicals in those wipes!

backstreetboysareback · 30/08/2018 12:19

I used water wipes from birth with dd.
She has beautiful skin.

backstreetboysareback · 30/08/2018 12:21

@rubyroot how do you work that out?
They are 99.9% water and one drop of grapefruit extract.

rubyroot · 30/08/2018 13:40

@backstreetboysareback- clumsily worded as meant wipes in general. Tho don’t be fooled- water wipes have chemicals on them- benzolkoniumchloride

Sandstormbrewing · 30/08/2018 14:48

@rubyroot they also have dihydrogenmoxide in them - which can be fatal if inhaled.

Cheeky wipes all the way for me -just so much better at cleaning that cotton wool or baby wipes!

Thissameearth · 30/08/2018 20:38

@sandstormbrewing 🤣👍🏻

rubyroot · 31/08/2018 13:25

Hasn’t got all brands here-but may be of interest

Amy1996 · 31/08/2018 13:43

I don't care about normal wet wipes that's not what I'm asking 😴

The list also has wet wipes on there if you look- two ingredients which are chemicals and the article also writes about potential for allergic reactions.

So thanks for your childish, ‘I don’t care’ reaction

Just trying to be helpful

rubyroot · 31/08/2018 14:00

So in answer to your q- water wipes not suitable from birth and have potential to cause nappy rash depending on sensitivity of your baby’s skin.

You need to use cotton wool on your newborn, it’s what is suggested by midwives etc. You can use the pads used for make up remover- Asda do some large ones which leave no fluffiness behind. No idea why ‘you can’t get on with them’. Just as good as wipes

dementedpixie · 31/08/2018 14:39

Actually the water wipes on your link contained 2 ingredients (compared to others that had more than 10) and didn't contain perfumes or a common alcohol used as a preservative.

I would use them on a new born quite happily. I used normal unperfumed wipes on my 2 when they were babies and they had no skin issues

dementedpixie · 31/08/2018 14:40

You dont need to use cotton wool, it's not the law!

TroubledLichen · 31/08/2018 14:50

My midwife reccomended the water wipes and said she used them on her own. Paediatrician that did DD’s newborn exam also gave them the ok. Your baby, use whatever you like but absolutely not true that you need to use cotton wool. You need to clean your baby’s bum, whether you use wipes or not is up to you.

And 6 months with only water wipes here, then switched to Amazon unscented (because you go through so many cleaning up sticky faces during weaning) and we have never had a nappy rash.

MotherofKitties · 31/08/2018 14:57

I used cotton balls with water for the first couple of days but quickly moved to pampers sensitive wipes; my DD has never had nappy rash or any reaction to them and she's a year old now, so I'd recommend them x

rubyroot · 31/08/2018 15:04

There’s a study published that the ingredient in them has caused infertility in mice, albeit 50x more than a single wipe. If you’re happy to use that on your newborn fine.. personally I think that water is much more gentle on their bums, and if your baby happens to be susceptible to nappy rash this is the best thing for them
