Water wipes on a newborn

Does anyone know if you can use water wipes on a new born ? Or does anyone know what wipes are good to use on a new born. I cannot get on with cotton wool.

Don't do it! We did and DD2's bottom was red raw after a while. Can't believe I stuck with them for that long, must've been sleep deprived. They must have been against trade description legislation!

You could use flannels or reusable wipes. What's the problem with cotton wool - have you sued the make up remover pads rather than balls?

mummadave · 29/08/2018 21:32

DS I used cotton wool on when he was born, hated the stuff but that's what we were told in NCT we had to use.
DD born this year I used water wipes on from birth. She's survived 8w so far Grin

MrsL2016 · 29/08/2018 21:33

I used water wipes and they state they are suitable from birth. I moved to standard fragrance free wipes after a couple of weeks and my DS was fine with them. Every baby is different but the water wipes should be fine for most newborns. They are more expensive so look out for offers and baby events in supermarkets when they are cheaper.

Stringofpearls · 29/08/2018 21:34

We've found Huggies Pure to be really good, our baby girl is now 3 1/2 months and has never had nappy rash.

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 29/08/2018 21:34

I used ordinary unfragranced wipes from Tesco on my two.

Want2bSupermum · 29/08/2018 21:34

Big fan of Costco own brand wipes. The alternative for my youngest was pampers wipes. Just about every other wipe resulted in a massive rash and subsequent infection. For a newborn put some vasaline on the wipe.

WooYa · 29/08/2018 21:35

I used ordinary wipes on my DS - I hated water wipes they're too wet. Poor lad was soaking 😂

BlueBug45 · 29/08/2018 21:35

You aren't suppose to use wet wipes on a new born or even any child, as there is some research out there that claims that they are the reason why so many children have allergies and skin infections. This is due to the residue they leave behind.

However I've seen many posts on different forums and vlogs stating that you WaterWipes are the best wipes to use if you wish to use them on a child particularly a newborn.

TroubledLichen · 29/08/2018 21:36

I used water wipes from birth. The midwife in the hospital even commented on how great they were and how she used them with her own. Fuck using cotton wool and water, it’s a massive faff and pretty disgusting. Now if only water wipes were biodegradable...

theycallmebabydriver · 29/08/2018 21:36

DD is 9 weeks and we've only ever used water wipes when nappy changing, no problems with her skin at all. There seems to be a rumour that hospitals will only let you use cotton wool which is nonsense in the 2 hospitals DD has been in since she's been born. One was an emergency admittance when she was 5 days old and we didn't have any changing things with us, they gave us generic wet wipes to use on her.

BrutusMcDogface · 29/08/2018 21:37

Ffs. Aren't supposed to use baby wipes on a baby's arse; wth are they actually for, then?

Want2bSupermum · 29/08/2018 21:37

blue can you post a link to the research. I highly doubt all wipes are causing allergies and skin infections.

ButterflyWitch · 29/08/2018 21:38

I had every intention of just using cotton wool and water until newborn did a big sticky meconium poo. I couldn’t get to the wipes fast enough Grin. I don’t see any reason why you can’t use water wipes on a newborn? I used natibaby I think til I was confident of no reactions. Then straight onto the good stuff/normal wipes

Amy1996 · 29/08/2018 21:39

I mean in the first week or 2 that's all obviously I will use wet wipes any other time but the first couple of weeks your not supposed to, but water wipes are different as no chemicals

blue utter nonsense

OrchidInTheSun · 29/08/2018 21:40

If you don't like cotton wool, just use loo paper and a roll of disposable J cloths. Or a washable cloth if you want to be more environmentally friendly

Babies did fine long before the advent of wet wipes

TeddyIsaHe · 29/08/2018 21:42

Used them on dd as soon as she was born, they were brilliant. No way was I faffing about with the cotton wool palaver.

Amy1996 · 29/08/2018 21:43

Thank you everyone, I'll defiantly been using them and leaving the cotton wool at home thank god Grin

Have you seen the list of ingredients on a wet wipe packet? Never put one near my DD and she's nearly three.

MrsL2016 · 29/08/2018 21:45

They are a lot wetter than baby wipes as I recall, so it's really important to make sure babies bum is nice and dry before you put a new nappy on, that will help reduce redness and chance of nappy rash. You also change their bum a lot at the start which can mean they get red/sore. I used to pat the bum dry with a muslin after cleaning, but make sure you don't use it for anything else Grin.

Chocolateismyvice · 29/08/2018 21:45

We used them from early on with no issues. We eventually started using reusable in the house and Water wipes for out and about. We tried a few normal wipes but my son had a mild reaction to them (sensitive skin), Water Wipes are the only ones that don't irritate him. I used the other wipes to take my make up sometimes and they dried my skin out terribly and I ended up with very sorry, dry, itchy eyes. No issues with Water Wipes. We also used own brand wipes to wipe the highchair down at time and they stripped the level numbers off. Made me wonder what the hell was in them! We are TTC again and next time, I'll use a mixture of cloth wipes and Water Wipes.

Chocolateismyvice · 29/08/2018 21:47

Also, Water Wipes are currently being stocked in Home Bargains for £1.79 at the moment, much cheaper than anywhere else 👍

Amy1996 · 29/08/2018 21:47

@M0reGinPlease WATER wipes are 99.9% water and 0.01% grape extract ?? So yeah I have I think you've read my post once I'm not talking about wet wipes I'm talking about water wipes

I used them from birth, my baby is now almost 11 months and thankfully never had irritation (or indeed any nappy rash or anything). I have never used any other wipes.

zebrapig · 29/08/2018 21:51

We used water wipes on both dc when they were newborns. Our NNU told us to get them as that's what they used.
