Water wipes on a newborn

Does anyone know if you can use water wipes on a new born ? Or does anyone know what wipes are good to use on a new born. I cannot get on with cotton wool.

OP posts:

Sorry if I was unclear.

I mean the ingredients and chemicals in regular wet wipes, even those branded as 'sensitive'. That is actually why the man who created water wipes did so.

ChipmunksAreMissing · 29/08/2018 21:54

We used the for the first 6 months. No problems at all apart from the bring a bit dear. You can buy them in bulk on amazon though.
Good luck

Pebblespony · 29/08/2018 21:55

Used from birth, no problem.

Thissameearth · 29/08/2018 21:55

i see there’s been some discussion over different types of wipes - in my post I’m referring to having using Water Wipes only. Pack the cotton wool still though, you need it to dry them off before putting nappy on 🙃

spugzbunny · 29/08/2018 21:59

My god these holier than thou mums not using any wipes whatsoever! Use what is easiest, make sure babies hum gets some air and treat any redness as soon as you see it! Life's too short and babies have been wet wiped for years!

Paradyning · 29/08/2018 22:00

They're fine.

spugzbunny · 29/08/2018 22:00

And don't use cotton wool to dry a wet bun! You'll end up with it everywhere! Use the small size muslins!

Steelesauce · 29/08/2018 22:00

Used normal wipes from birth for all 3dc with no issues.

Wowzel · 29/08/2018 22:01

I used bog standard wet wipes and my daughters bum survived so I'm sure water wipes will be fine.

I attempted cotton wool and water but what a faff

butlerswharf · 29/08/2018 22:01

I used them. The hospital suggested them. No ill effects and did the job. Then moved on to the huggies ones

Thissameearth · 29/08/2018 22:02

@spugzbunny if you pat rather than wipe you avoid the fleecing fluffy bum mess. The things you learn...your muslins are probably better for environment though

meow1989 · 29/08/2018 22:06

We used water and cotton wool for about 2 weeks then tried a few different types and have found that Huggins pure are the best. Ds 10 weeks now, bums been fine 😊

ohnothanks · 29/08/2018 22:06

I used scented tesco wipes from day 0. Heresy. And yet somehow both kids are fine and neither had any form of skin irritation...

Beware the marketing bumph around child-rearing. There is an awful loy of pseudoscientific crap around. If you are really concerned you can use flannels washed in non-bio but who needs that shizzle with a newborn??

Polestar50 · 29/08/2018 22:07

I used Water wipes from day one with no problems at all.

Then from about a month have been using reusable Cheeky Wipes (with water wipes as useful back up when out and about).

Love love love my Cheeky Wipes. They are much ‘grippier’ and get poo off much more effectively than slippery wet wipes and the whole system is a lot simpler to manage than I had feared.

You can use flannels in exactly the same way but the Cheeky Wipes boxes and washbag systems are well thought out and simple to use they make it all contained and easy.

A bit of upfront cost but will definitely save loads on wet wipes in the long term so worth the money imo.

I promise I don’t work for them!

hersandhis · 29/08/2018 22:10

My son is 8 weeks old.

I used water wipes when he was born. I asked my midwife if that was okay and she gave me the green light so I chose water wipes
over cotton wool for convenience and like a previous poster my sons bottom was red raw after a week. It was horrible! Used cream to try and clear it up. Didn't work. When he was three weeks old stopped using the water wipes and started using normal baby wipes from Aldi and his bottom cleared up straight away and it's been fine since.

Would never use the water wipes again!

HerSymphonyAndSong · 29/08/2018 22:12

We used reusable wipes from birth (and they were MUCH better at getting meconium off than any disposable wipes or cotton wool). I do have water wipes as emergency backup in case of washing failure

Iirc there is concern re disposable wipes of contamination of the packet during a nappy change and it being a breeding ground for bacteria but I can’t really recall the details

twoundertwo54321 · 29/08/2018 22:13

I used cotton pads and water in the end as I used wipes and her bottom got very sore. However the only wipes that didn't bother her were water wipes so I used those when out and about. By about 8 weeks I was using Aldi sensitive wipes with no problems.

dementedpixie · 29/08/2018 22:19

I used wipes after the first couple of weeks with dd. With ds I used wipes on him in hospital after his birth. Water wipes didn't exist so they were bog standard sensitive ones. No skin issues

lorisparkle · 29/08/2018 22:20

My ds had a terrible reaction to all wipes, we got these fab mini muslin cloths which were so much better than cotton wool. I hate cotton wool too especially when it gets in the carpet!

Wetwashing00 · 29/08/2018 22:24

This isn’t gonna be helpful since I can’t remember where I got them from but I had these dry wipes that you just soaked in water.
They were all rolled up like bandages and some were compressed into little discs.
I’ll have a google search...

Wetwashing00 · 29/08/2018 22:25

Aqua tissue... or equivalent

DameSquashalot · 29/08/2018 22:31

I'm.not close to being Ng holier than thou, but I didn't use wipes when DD was newborn because.the midwife told.me.not to and I couldn't think for.myself. I even waited 6 months to the day before letting any solid food pass her lips.

I didn't use nappy cream either because the MW told me there was no need to use it on newborns.

Thetimehascometo · 29/08/2018 22:46

We were told by our NICU to use water wipes on DD as that was what they had been using. Dd has never had a problem and at 13 weeks we are still using water wipes 😊

ThirdChildFourthPile · 29/08/2018 22:48

One of our lecturers at uni said something about baby wipes now being linked to allergies because it's making them "too clean" ergo not being able to form a good immune response to all the crap stuff.

I have a child with multiple severe allergies and now I'm torn between "fuck it, it's baby wipes." and not wanting to temp fate because seeing your kid go into anaphylactic shock at 5 months old is pretty horrific.
But can baby wipes really be to blame?'
