I had a girl's name all set but it turns out that we are having a boy, so now I am in a dither. What do you think of any of these:

Jonah
Jonas
Seamus
Noah
Tariq
Ravi
Seth
Heath

DH has already vetoed a few of these but would still love your opinions!

oooggs · 05/06/2007 12:17

I don't dislike any of them, but I wouldn't use any of them myself

TenaLady · 05/06/2007 12:17

Dont like Tariq or Ravi, the rest are ok. My friend just named her newborn boy Eibor (pron) eebor. Never heard that one before, Viking name I think

TaylorsMummy · 05/06/2007 12:18

don't like them myself but your baby so up to you, love

WigWamBam · 05/06/2007 12:19

Don't really like any of them - sorry.

Plus I associate Jonah with bad luck - a Jonah is a jinx.

shouldbe · 05/06/2007 12:19

I like Noah but am not keen on any of the others tbh

MamaG · 05/06/2007 12:21

Actualyl, don't have Seth in case he has a lisp.

Whats your name?

Theth

Stargazing · 05/06/2007 12:21

OMG!! A Jinx! in what language?? when??? Help. I looked up the meaning, saw that it meant dove and thought "how nice, peace, harmony etc" The thought of a jinx is awful, especially after the scary nuchal result I had last week (had CVS though, all fine)

Miaou · 05/06/2007 12:21

Quite like Seth.

TaylorsMummy · 05/06/2007 12:23

doesn't it mean bad luck?

TaylorsMummy · 05/06/2007 12:24

jonah that is

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 05/06/2007 12:25

I like Noah -
my dh said no to this !

PBirdy · 05/06/2007 13:52

I love Noah - my DH said no to that name too but I love it

RGPargy · 05/06/2007 14:03

Yes, a Jonah is an icon of bad luck. To call someone a Jonah would mean that you are calling them a jinx.

Found these definitions on Dictionary.com:

Jonah:

  1. a Minor Prophet who, for his impiety, was thrown overboard from his ship and swallowed by a large fish, remaining in its belly for three days before being cast up onto the shore unharmed.

  2. a book of the Bible bearing his name.

  3. any person or thing regarded as bringing bad luck.

Tinker · 05/06/2007 14:05

Yes, but the meaning of a name is, well, meaningless. Do you liek teh sound of the name? That's what matters, surely, not hocus pocus about it meaning bad luck.

MrsBadger · 05/06/2007 14:11

I quite like both Jonas and Noah but wouldn't use either myself.

Have you relevant heritage for Ravi or Tariq? Not that it matters really but they might sit a bit strangely on a white-blond Nordic-looker.

tiredmumov3 · 05/06/2007 14:14

love seamus and noah knew a tariq who was a right pain in the a* so it put me off the name soz!
but heath is quite nice and still quite unusual ...........well it is here in nottinghamshire where all new babys are called jack or jessica it seems (apart from mine) not that there is anything wrong with those names of course

saadia · 05/06/2007 14:16

I like Heath.

lemonaid · 05/06/2007 14:21

Like Jonas and Noah and Seth. The others are OK.

Clary · 05/06/2007 14:21

I wouldn't go for Jonah personally, it means bad luck (sorry to any mums of Jonahs)

I really like Noah and also Heath, know a lovely Heath. Ditto Seth actually.

Agree with Mrs B about tariq and Ravi. She's a wise woman is Mrs B.

Stargazing · 05/06/2007 15:20

well I am half Indian - so okay for Ravi, not so much for Tariq - but our dd is dark skinned, dark-haired, (as are both of us) so we can get away with a middle easter name I think? Tariq means morning star which I think is lovely

gutted about jonah! knew the fish story but not that he was considered bad omen! all I wa thinking was that it was a good thing that our dd is not likely to be overweight or nasty kids at school woudl call them Jonah and the Whale!!!

OP posts:
Chloe55 · 05/06/2007 15:21

I'm not keen on any - sorry, particularly dislike Tariq.

NikkiBFG · 05/06/2007 15:23

Middle Eastern names:

Yusuf
Sami
Khalid
Kareem
Hassan
