I had a girl's name all set but it turns out that we are having a boy, so now I am in a dither. What do you think of any of these:

Jonah
Jonas
Seamus
Noah
Tariq
Ravi
Seth
Heath

DH has already vetoed a few of these but would still love your opinions!

stargazing, I was also thinking of Ravi (I'm also half Indian) or Raju but dp not keen.

I also love Noah, once had a very lovely boyfriend of that name

Think Noah seems to be the general consensus but it is also becoming very popular if you are looking for an unusual name (ditto Seth I think)

beckmo · 05/06/2007 15:25

Johah, Jonas, Noah and Seth were all top of my list.

Alll vetoed by DH!I still love them though. Actually I like all of your choices. We are now going to use a Grandparents name but I'm too superstitious to post it!

geekInPigtails · 05/06/2007 15:34

Re Jonah, I think the whole bad luck thing is a load of nonsense. It vaguely comes from the Bible story, and Dictionary.com got it slightly wrong, the longer version is: Jonah was a guy who God told to do a job. Jonah didn't fancy the job at first, so tried to run away from it by catching a boat. A storm came and the superstitious sailors thought it was Jonah's fault, i.e. he was bad luck, and so threw him overboard (the gits). Jonah gets eaten by and then thrown up by the whale, goes through various other trials, eventually decides he's be better getting on with the job, and turned out to be a great prophet after all.

So it's a reluctant hero story really, which I quite like (a bit like Gideon - have you thought of that one?) and nothing to do with bad luck.

Stargazing · 05/06/2007 16:08

thanks you geekinpigtails - that's a much better way of looking at the story! I do like Noah but feel it is becoming a bit overcooked - felt that Jonah was a good alternative - sounds similar, sounds good with dd's name (which is Phoenix - yes, I can hear the groan of disgust from here, but we like it) and has the good story behind it (which was one of the reasons we like Phoenix)
I fear Ravi could be too easily changed to Ravioli, esp when we move back to Australia - we are notorious for shortening/ lengthening names to make them ridiculous.

Also, when we have another girl, we will call her Anoushka - and then it would be like we were ripping off the whole Shankar family. Ditto why I won't call a boy Joaquin - love the name but you can't have a Joaquin and a Phoenix, too daft

Is jonas the same as Jonah in the bible?

What about JERICHO??? That's a bit poncey actually isn't it. Jerry for short though ...???

WigWamBam · 05/06/2007 16:26

The Jonah story itself is nothing to do with bad luck. But because the sailors thought Jonah was a jinx, the name has come to be synonymous with someone who brings bad luck and the dictionary definition of a Jonah is "a person believed to bring bad luck to those around him". Of course it's nonsense, but it's a meaning of the word that I thought you may not have come across before - not a meaning of the name but a meaning of the noun. It would be a shame to chose the name not knowing of the association and then find out about it later.

Jonas is someone completely different.

skidaddle · 05/06/2007 16:45

stargaze - you could get a lot worse than ravioli for a bit of playground teasing - ravioli is luverly

geekInPigtails · 05/06/2007 17:18

WigWamBam, you're right, I suppose it is something you have to bear in mind, just wanted Stargazing to know the more positive side of the background too.

jo25 · 05/06/2007 17:21

I like Noah, Jonas and Seth.

tortoiseSHELL · 05/06/2007 17:31

I like Noah and Jonas, don't like the others.

tortoiseSHELL · 05/06/2007 17:32

What about Joel?

McDreamy · 05/06/2007 17:33

I like Joel

Stargazing · 05/06/2007 17:48

no, I don't like Joel ... makes me think of someone a bit wet. Sorry

OP posts:
tortoiseSHELL · 05/06/2007 17:56

lol at 'a bit wet' - Jonah and Noah were both 'literally wet'!!!

goingfor3 · 05/06/2007 17:59

I used to like Noah until very recently but have really gone off it and I don't like any of the others either. Nobody around me likes my choice of names, you just have to go with what you like.

Stargazing · 05/06/2007 18:07

LOL tortoiseshell you're right!

maybe that's quite cool - our first dd (stillborn) was called Star, 10-month old dd is Phoenix and then ds will be Noah or Jonah - so we will have a child for each element,
Star: the heavens
Phoenix ; fire
Noah/ Jonah : water (no bad think in Australia either, being named after someone who survived a flood and a shark attack, okay whale, but you get my drift)

then just have to come up with an earth name for a 4th child!

OP posts:
MrsMcJnr · 05/06/2007 19:28

Love Star - so sorry to hear what happened to her

I prefer Noah to Jonah but that's because I like Noah Wiley from ER and knew someone I didn't like called Jonah (he was a right weirdo actually!)

Hey Geek - how are you???!!!

Bouquetsofdynomite · 06/06/2007 10:23

I've got a Noah, we call him Nomotoba for short . I wanted to call him Seth but Noah is DH's favourite name ever so I let him have it (not until some hours after the birth mind). Plus the author Vikram Seth is Indian, isn't he? There's a link for you.
Agree Joel is a bit wet somehow.

binker · 06/06/2007 10:25

Noah - Seth is a bit ' Cold Comfort Farm' for my liking...

geekInPigtails · 06/06/2007 10:56

Hello MrsMcJnr! (sorry everyone else) I'm great thanks, 18 weeks and finally feeling 'normal' again, so starting to enjoy being pregnant properly! I heard about your diagnosis and your good news a while back - how are you doing now?

BagLady75 · 06/06/2007 13:24

Love Seth. Noah would come in second. Not crazy about any of the others.

Bouquetsofdynomite · 06/06/2007 14:35

Ah but I've only seen Cold Comfort Farm on telly - wasn't it Rufus Sewell as Seth Starkadder? Yum!

binker · 06/06/2007 15:25

mm,that's a point - it's a bit in the mode of Emmerdale's Dingle family - Shadrach, Eli,Cain !

oliveoil · 06/06/2007 15:29

Noah ok

Bouquetsofdynomite · 06/06/2007 18:44

Yup there was a Noah Dingle too in Emmerdale!

MrsMcJnr · 07/06/2007 14:44

Wow Geek, time flies! Glad you are feeling well and starting to enjoy it! I?m doing well, it?s hard getting used to the meds and being pregnant again and there are scary days but things do seem to be going ok so fingers crossed. I?m about 8 ½ weeks now .
