Ladies I would really appreciate your help in deciding what to call our ds due in October. My dh and I have very very different ideas on what is a good boys name but after much wrangling have come up with the following shortlist....

Patrick to be called Paddy - this started as a joke but has really grown on us. Just not entirely sure that Paddy isn't too much of a joke name...

Ben - we LOVE this but our surname starts with T making him BenT - not ideal!

Adam - good solid boys name but not really lighting my fires...

Matt - ditto Adam but also have a issue with door mat!

So your votes please -
Paddy
Ben
Adam or
Matt

HELP HELP HELP!!!!

I get the feeling you don't really like any of them?

I like Ben but take your point about your surname. That's not good.

scorpio1 · 04/06/2007 13:21

I like Matthew or Ben.

Matthew could be Matty [cute]

I personally dont like Paddy, but thats just me

binker · 04/06/2007 13:22

Paddy !

alicet · 04/06/2007 13:32

Thanks for some feedback so quick!! Beansprout you're right none of them would have been my fisrt choice but at least they represent middle ground for me and dh that both of us can live with!!! WHich has taken us a while to find!

Paddy probably fave at the mo but slightly concerned its a bit of a joke - when dh suggested it I thought he had a screw loose but its growing on me.....

I love Paddy its not something you hear everyday

binker · 04/06/2007 13:44

boys names are really difficult -
Paddy is nice I think - haven't heard of any in ds's school, though there was a Patrick - I think it's great not to have a name that everyone else is called ...
I like Eric - don't ask me why though !

Fimbo · 04/06/2007 13:48

My ds is Adam, it was my dh's choice not mine. I truly do not have a single boys name that I like. I have had 3.5 years of getting used to the name Adam and have to say now it quite suits ds and it has grown on me.

ChippyMinton · 04/06/2007 13:48

Quite like Paddy, the more you say it the better it sounds. Traditional but not too many around (i know of one school age). I do like Adam too. Actually like them all. No help, am I?

Lio · 04/06/2007 13:49

How about if instead of being Ben T he was Benedict T?

Tutter · 04/06/2007 13:50

god i'm the same fio

really am not mad about any boys names

going to struggle this time...

Tutter · 04/06/2007 13:50

fimbo, even

Fimbo · 04/06/2007 13:54

Lol Tutter. It's weird isn't it? I had loads of names for ds if he had been a girl. Even on name threads on mn where there are loads of different boys names bandied about I never think - yup that's a great name. Just as well dh has had the snip!

alicet · 04/06/2007 13:54

Boys names are really hard! Hence we were bound to have a boy - ds1 is Sam and doesn't even have a middle name as we couldn't decide!

Not so keen on Benedict / Benjamin - really just like Ben. Shame really!

I like Paddy too - unusual.

alicet · 04/06/2007 13:57

Adam is dh's fave but I worry it hasn't grown much on me despite best efforts. Guess it wil happen if we go with that though hey Fimbo!

OP posts:
binker · 04/06/2007 14:00

don't just go with something you aren't really happy with though !

Fimbo · 04/06/2007 14:05

Ah but I did Binker.

Can't imagine my ds as anything other than Adam now but then I had to just go with it otherwise he would have been the first child registered as "baby"!

Alice - go with Adam, you will learn to like it.

Rosetip · 04/06/2007 14:05

Of all of them, I like Adam the best as I quite like names that can't be shortened.

However I'm not the best person to advise! We had our third son 10 days ago and had to cancel our appointment at the Register's office this morning as we just can't find one that we both like.

The problem for us with Adam is that we already have a son with a name beginning with A, and I'm worried about post being mixed up etc in the future- better to have everyone with a different initial I think.

Other than Adam, it's Nicholas, Luke, Matthew or possibly Christopher except that he doesn't really look like one...

choosyfloosy · 04/06/2007 14:08

Like Paddy a lot, though personally I like Patrick even more. It's a win-win for me.

Fimbo · 04/06/2007 14:08

My 10 year old nephew is called Euan. I hated it when he was born and thought it was an awful name. But again I actually quite like it now.

binker · 04/06/2007 14:09

a friend has an Adam and it's shortened to Ad !

Fimbo · 04/06/2007 14:09

My Adam gets called Ads/Addie

rosealbie · 04/06/2007 14:10

My cousin (now in his 30's) is called Patrick and it's never been shortened, not even by his firends. I really like it but also like Paddy.

rosealbie · 04/06/2007 14:10

FRIENDS even!

alicet · 04/06/2007 14:15

Yes we also worry about Paddy preferring Patrick when he's older which would be absolutely fine as we both like that too. But not if it gets shortened to Pat!!!!!! Pat Butcher from Eastenders - just can't get away from it!
