So recently I have realised that when you are pregnant, everyone else around you turns into a bloody midwife!!

I love drinking coke but literally half a can with my lunch a day.

What is the right amount to drink? I'm getting made to feel very bad for drinking it!

Is the issue the caffeine? Caffeine free Diet Coke is your friend but half a can of coke will not put you above the daily limit. Also ignore anyone else it’s none of their business.

SoyDora · 16/08/2018 17:24

Half a can of Coke with your lunch is absolute olutely fine.
The guidelines for caffeine consumption in pregnancy is 200mg per day. A can of Coke has approx 32mg I believe.

socraties1234 · 16/08/2018 17:30

I got in trouble with the hospital I was at for drinking to much but that was probably because it was half a bottle most days. I was told my baby could be born diabetic. I stopped straight away, but went back on it after baby was born. bottle fed by the way.

DorisDays · 16/08/2018 17:32

Ive been drinking green cola instead - it's a bloody good substitute. It uses stevia instead of evil aspartame so you feel less bad. I get it on amazon

Tumilnaughts · 16/08/2018 17:33

Coke was something a craved terribly when I was pregnant. Did no harm - I was only having about a glass (not a pint) a day. Sounds like you're not having much either.

Chester1980 · 16/08/2018 17:41

For some reason I am craving coke (it has to be in an ice cold can). Cherry coke is even better. Not sure why, I wasn’t bothered by it before I was pregnant.

Max I have one can in a day (if any).

I get comments too about how much sugar is in it etc. Caffeine wise I think it’s ok.

CobaltRose · 16/08/2018 17:43

I've actually craved Coke in this pregnancy, even though I don't drink it normally. Half a can is totally fine.

FlippertyJibbet88 · 16/08/2018 17:52

All I can say is I drink way more than you do (I get awful cravings) and did in my last pregnancy as well. I had the fear of god put into me that baby would never sleep because of my coke consumption while I breastfed and she was doing six hours at night from newborn and has slept through (10-12 hours) since she was old enough to do so! I'm not saying coke is good, but it didn't have negative effects for me.
Call me cynical, but some people would suck every little joy out of your life while you're pregnant, but I feel that in moderation something like coca cola is going to be as OK as it is when not pregnant!

53rdWay · 16/08/2018 17:58

I drank a lot of Coke during my pregnancy with horrendous sickness - water wouldn’t stay down. Doctor and midwives not bothered at all.

Cas90 · 16/08/2018 18:02

I have to drink 1 can of Coke Zero with my lunch that was my usual routine before pregnancy and I stopped when I found out I was pregnant, headaches nausea etc. I know it's probably caffeine withdrawal but I've gone into decaf tea and after the morning sickness I just want to enjoy my lunch and have a fulfilled afternoon. It's a treat, we deserve it x

PotteringAlong · 16/08/2018 18:03

Drink the coke.

LucyLou19 · 16/08/2018 20:32

Absolutely LOVE full fat coke! Having tons of it at the minute!! 35 weeks tomorrow 👌🏼Enjoy it xx

Darkstar4855 · 16/08/2018 20:43

I am a diet coke addict, went off it completely in first trimester but taste for it came back after 12 weeks! There’s 42mg caffeine in a 330ml can so you can have 3-4 cans a day and still be well within the 200mg recommended daily limit (assuming you’re not drinking tea/coffee as well). Watch out for the high sugar in the non-diet/zero stuff though.

Flamingo84 · 16/08/2018 22:20

I’ve been wanting coke so badly but since day 1 it’s given me really bad trapped wind Blush! If I’d been able to I would have been having more than half a can. Yumm!

Ignore the food/drink police, there’s always someone waiting to comment. I was eating nuts at my desk and a never-been-pregnant colleague announced that my baby would get a nut allergy if I ate them. I smiled and carried on eating them. She then huffed off and must have looked it up online as she came back an hour later to tell me it was safe to eat them. Like I didn’t know and was waiting for her approval Hmm

As PP’s have said, the quantity you’re having seems fine. As long as NHS site says it’s ok, go for it. Enjoy!

Lalaland44 · 16/08/2018 22:54

My DM said she drank 3 ltrs of Coke a day when she was pregnant with me. I was born late 1976 post drought weighing 11lbs ShockGrin

NelleB · 17/08/2018 04:35

Same here, fizzy drinks and milkshakes have been a staple throughout. Midwife said ‘well its not like you’re smoking and drinking a bottle of vodka a day. You could be doing much worse’ I get a large bottle and limit myself to small tumblers when I get the urge.

Ameliablue · 17/08/2018 04:43

Coke was one of the few drinks I could tolerate when pregnant. I just opted for the caffeine free.

Filzma · 17/08/2018 05:19

Sorry to derail, I crave the fizz/ gas and not really the taste. Any alternative or 'healthier' option?

StarfishSandwich · 17/08/2018 07:23

Filzma Fizzy water? I can easily drink 1l of flavoured fizzy water in one sitting!

I’m a total fizz addict OP. I was drinking at least one 500ml bottle of Pepsi Max/Diet Coke/Sprite Zero (sorry, don’t believe aspartame is evil Hmm) daily before maternity leave. I’d be more concerned about the high sugar content of regular Coke than the caffeine but as long as you’re not also eating all the cake, there is no problem at all!

winterdeballesteros · 17/08/2018 07:31

Well. My partner drinks a lot of Coke Zero and I thought it was called Coke Zero as it had zero sugar and caffeine! I've been having one of his cans in the evening to help with my sickness so no wonder I can't sleep!

Filzma I drink soda water with some frozen berries in the bottom. I don’t really like sweet drinks but also craved the fizz so it hits the spot for me.

HidCat · 17/08/2018 08:34

@aaaarti I drink too much but I stick to Pepsi Max or Caffeine free so my main concern is the aspartame but that hasn't been listed as a particular concern in pregnancy, just for general health. I try to drink as much water / squash as I can to reduce my fizz but if I want it, I have it. I was the same in my first pregnancy, actually I didn't drink caffeine free at all last time, oops. My midwife isn't concerned.

usernotfound0000 · 17/08/2018 08:39

I have caffeine free stuff at home, if out and about I will usually have a can or a glass from the pub with a meal, unless you were drinking gallons of the stuff, I really wouldn't worry.

Emma765 · 17/08/2018 08:42

I've been craving fizz and citrus and I've been hitting the Sanpellegrino hard. Too scared to look at sugar content! Will maybe switch to orange squash and soda water.
