Small 1st baby

My 1st ds was classed as small as he was 6lb at 41 weeks. I'm now 24 weeks with second ds and am booked in for growth scans every 3 weeks from 28 weeks, did anyone have a small baby then go on to have a slightly bigger one? Or anyone else gone through this?

Yes dd born at 38 weeks 4lb 15oz
Ds at 38 weeks 6lb 7oz
So not huge still but bigger

jlm2514 · 01/08/2018 19:22

Ah but still a few pounds difference, thanks Smile

I was induced at 39 weeks as they thought baby was small...he was 6lb 1oz in the end. Second baby 18 months later was 7lb 1oz. I think it's common enough for the second to be bigger.

jlm2514 · 01/08/2018 19:23

Hope so, been worrying I'd be set off early etc if he wasn't growing right

Who ‘classed’ your first as small? I don’t think 6lb is out of the ordinary is it? I had 5lb8 (not classed as low birth weight - just on the cusp for this I think), then 7lb4, then 6lb4.
First there was mention of IUGR connected to pre eclampsia. 3rd they picked up at 20wk scan that she was small for dates so had growth scans all the way through with Dopplers to check placental blood flow.
So I wouldn’t worry. 6lb is not even that small and subsequent babies are often bigger. Good luck!

jlm2514 · 01/08/2018 20:23

I didn't initially think he was that small. It was at my booking in appointment for this baby it was brought up, they put previous baby's weight etc into computer then put the graph in my maternity notes and said I'd be monitored every 3 weeks from 28 weeks.

I wouldn’t say it’s small either, but it’s no bad thing to have some extra scans!

With both DD1 and DD2 I had issues with the placenta starting to fail towards the end. DD1 had IUGR as a result and was 2.6kg at 40+5, so under 6lb. DD2 was born at 38w weighing 2.9kg, so a decent amount more than her sister albeit also on the small side.

Hjkillas · 01/08/2018 20:39

I'm not sure I can talk just yet, but my DS was born at 38+1 weighing 6lb15 and this baby was scanned at 37+6 and estimated 6lb14oz so very similar for gestation ..however I'm now 39+3 and she's still in there so I'm assuming she will be atleast 7 and a half to 8 pound.
Every pregnancy is different but it's good that they are monitoring you, you'll know if you need tiny baby clothes which I wasn't expecting to need with my DS but had to rush out and buy, especially as he lost his birth weight in the first week x

MouseRatFan · 01/08/2018 20:44

My first dc was 5lb 7oz. No other health concerns but was induced due to the concern over their weight.
DC two was nearly eight pounds and no issues at all.

Jestem · 01/08/2018 20:47

DC1- 6lb 4oz
DC2- 9lb 6oz

Second birth was easier, no tearing, faster recovery too Grin

clauds7397 · 01/08/2018 20:48

ds1 was 7lb 8oz at 41+5, only when i booked in with ds2 did they say ds1 was small and i would need extra scans with ds2. ds2 was born at 39+2 at 8lb 9. so looks like they were right, ds1 was small! it gave me peace of mind having the extra scans

Jestem · 01/08/2018 20:49

Oh and I had extra growth scans second time round, as on my growth chart DC1 was 3rd centile. Both of them were born around the 41 week mark.

Ekphrasis · 01/08/2018 20:59

Yes, ds1: 5.5 lb at 42 weeks, (emcs due to being in difficultly due to iugr ) below the scale but settled just above the 25th centile after a couple of months, healthy active 5 year old who is taller than many of his mates. I was 35.

Ds2, 7lb 11 oz at 40 weeks (elcs) - born around the 50th c, now a very chubby 11 week old on the 91st centile. Weighs now what ds1 did at 6 mo!

I did take aspirin for the second pregnancy but there's mixed opinions on whether it works. Had many growth scans and I'm 41. Hospital told me to take aspirin for future pregnancies when ds was born but had reversed the advice officially when I was pregnant with ds2, though a dr and a sonographer reckoned it was worth doing and the rest felt no harm. However there were other factors that might have helped; also apparently second babies are often bigger.

Ekphrasis · 01/08/2018 21:01

Ds1 was not supposed to be small though I was a bit worried tummy measurements had dropped; mws didn't take any notice. I always wish I'd made a fuss about it and had a later scan as it would have been picked up and I wouldn't have gone to 42 weeks.

jlm2514 · 01/08/2018 21:29

Thanks everyone for getting back to me Smile I know it's a good thing getting extra scans just been worried what the outcomes would be if his growth did slow down etc. I had a scan around 34/36 weeks with my 1st and nothing was mentioned about his size then or at his birth so that's why I was shocked to find out he's classed as small. Hopefully this labour will be faster and I'll birth a chunky monkey!Grin

Wow @Jestem What a difference in weight! I'm hoping for that with this labour too haha🙏🏻

DD was born at 35wks-I was scanned the day before as had premature rupture of membranes and they said she was a good 6.5lbs-came out at 4lbs!
Both DS's I was scanned All The Time as bump again v small-DS1 37wks and 6.2lbs DS2 36.5wks and 6lbs. So bigger though not huge! Obviously I neither cook them well enough or long enough!!!

ThreeIsACharm · 01/08/2018 21:37

I had something call single umbilical artery with my first. Growth scans continually and induced at 37 weeks. Dd was 4lb8oz.
Second pregnancy I had lost of extra checks and the scans from 20 weeks. Ds was 7lb
Fingers crossed your pregnacy goes a bit more smooth.

Lynne1Cat · 01/08/2018 21:42

My sons are in their 30s now, but the 1st one was 6lb 14, born at 36 weeks. 2nd son was full-term, weighed 10lb 13! (yes, same dad, in case anyone wondered)

jlm2514 · 01/08/2018 21:44

4lbs I thought thinking back 6lb was tiny! Thank you @ThreeIsACharm hope so

jlm2514 · 01/08/2018 21:46

@Lynne1Cat Shock that is a fair few pounds more!

OP posts:
Dementedswan · 01/08/2018 21:50

My first was 6.8 born at 41wks, second 5.5 born at 39 weeks. Iugr wàs mentioned however they were both healthy and are now 8 and 7 very lean and active children.

TheCag · 01/08/2018 21:52

Yep, first was 6lb 2, second was 8lb 3. Second birth was easier too.
I’m expecting dc3 and will also have to have growth scans for this one, even though dc2 was fine.

Passmethecrisps · 01/08/2018 21:54

Yes. I was monitored all the way through pregnancy with dd2 as they kept telling me DD1 was small for gestational age. (It actually turns out that while she was little she wasn’t medically small - it was a typo. 40+2 became 42weeks)

Anyway, DD1 was 6ib 13 and dd2 was 7ib 3. Interestingly though DD1 bumped along the bottom of the charts for an age thanks to reflux and CMPI while DD2 has just been measured at 1 year as being on the 98th centile for length and 92nd for weight.

InDubiousBattle · 01/08/2018 22:01

D's was 6 lb 5oz (39+5) so I was sent for extra scans with dd. The scans showed her to be under the 10th centile so I had to have weekly scans (doppler one week, then full scan the next)from around 26 weeks. She grew fine, just small. She sneaked just over the 10th centile and turned (she was breech at every scan)at around 37/38 weeks. Went to 40+4, had a short 5 hours labour (compared to 30 hours with ds), straight forward delivery and easy recovery. She was a small but perfectly formed 6lb11oz, so a little bit bigger than ds.
