Am agonising over this and need some advice. Is it fair and responsible to call your daughter Scout? Are there any Scouts out there? Or mothers/aunties/uncles/fathers of Scouts?

Honest answers please. The other name in the pipeline is Emmy.

Thanks :-)

Scout???????

Do you really want her to go through her life being called "dib" or "dib dob"??

Sorry, but kids can be so cruel. Plus i dont like the name.

Blunt but honest.

niceglasses · 31/05/2007 12:32

Is it orginally from 'To Kill a Mocking Bird'?

I quite like it. Prob not call a child of my own it, but I like it all the same.

scorpio1 · 31/05/2007 12:38

i like it too, but like Emmy Scout far better. so cool!

Astrophe · 31/05/2007 12:41

I think it will date, its very 'trendy'. I like Emma, shortened to Emmy if you like. I don't think you do your kids any favours calling them something too trendy (havng said that, mine are called unusual names! but one is a foreign version of an English name, and one is an old Biblical name)

RGPargy · 31/05/2007 12:44

Scout seems very American to me......

PBirdy · 31/05/2007 12:45

I think that Demi Moore called one of her daughter's Scout. I don't like it though, sorry.

Emmy is cute. My sister's name is Emily and she was called Emmy when she was little, and Em when she got older. Maybe you could go with that and use Emmy as a nickname - it might be a bit cute as an adult name on its own.

I loooove Scout! Are you a To Kill a Mockingbird fan? Thinking of Demi & Bruce's kids, Talullah and Rumer are also great names but I remember reading somewhere that at least one of their girls has officially changed her name as she hated it so much.

Emmy doesn't appeal to me but Emily's good.

MadamePlatypus · 31/05/2007 12:55

Oh Emmy Scout - how lovely! The character in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' is brilliant. I would go for it - either the 2 together or just Scout. There is no such thing as a name that can't be twisted into something that could be used for teasing. There is also no such thing as a name that everybody likes. Much better to be a Scout than have a name that everybody suddenly 'likes' just because everybody else is using it.

Nbg · 31/05/2007 12:57

Love Scout.
Great name.

One of Bruce Willis children is called Scout.

maxbear · 31/05/2007 12:57

I read somewhere that people with unusual names are less likely to be successful in business. I personally don't like scout all that much, I much prefer Emmy. How about Hattie, ok am a bit biased as it is dd's name but it is quite unusual and very lovely!!

sauce · 31/05/2007 13:00

Some names attract teasing more than others. Scout could easily become sprout.

AngelH · 31/05/2007 13:07

I really like Emmy. I'm due in August and at the moment we are going with Emelia, to be shortened to Emmy

twoplusone · 31/05/2007 13:15

I do like the nake Scout, straight away I thought of TO Kill a mockingbird, as did others. Personally though I wouldnt call my dd that, but I like plain names, not very adventurous, ij the names department.
My DD is called Nicole, which she doesnt like so she has asked that we call her Cole instead.
If this little one was a girl she was going to be called Leigh.

skidaddle · 31/05/2007 15:42

My cousin is called Emmy and she's lovely so it gets my vote

leo1978 · 31/05/2007 16:40

Thanks you guys! Think will go for Emmy Scout - an excellent suggestion! Then she has an option of sensible first name verses very cool indeed middle name. Just needs to arrive now - 5 days overdue - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

tigerschick · 31/05/2007 16:46

You beat me to it - I was going to agree that Emmy Scout is very nice indeed.

Good luck and hope you don't have to wait much longer

Gemtubbs · 31/05/2007 21:00

leo1978, I think Emmy Scout is really nice. Scout reminds me of the Ben Elton book Popcorn, which I had to read in college. Good luck with your new little baby! Love Gem.xXx

not too sure about scout, sounds a bit masculine to me.But I always think an unusual name grows with a child.
My friend named her dd Dixie and at first I thought it was odd but I love it now and couldn't imagine her with any other name.
If you love it go for it!

fingerwoman · 31/05/2007 22:20

I think Scout is fab. I do like unusual names, especially literary-inspired ones
lesley waters (tv chef) also has a daughter called scout, I read that today.

I also think that hatrick should call her dd3 scout anyway, even if it's her middle name.
