Hi. Me and my OH have our first appointment in the fertility clinic on Thursday and I know there is going to be a smoking test. I don’t smoke but my OH has stopped but stupidly on Friday had 2 cigarettes. I can’t stop worrying now incase he fails. Is he likley to. I’m so so worried

OP posts:

Yes but why are they testing him?

Lauren83 · 08/07/2018 15:05

Are you sure they will? I have had IVF in a few different clinics and I work in an IVF clinic too and no ones ever tested in my experience

MrsJayy · 08/07/2018 15:07

2 cigarettes readings will be long gone I am sure it will be ok It will be blowing into the puffer thing

Grumpos · 08/07/2018 15:47

They will test you, not sure about partner as he wasn’t with me.
Just don’t lie about it if they do want to test. Much better to be honest and say “no I don’t smoke day to day but I have had the occasional cigarette, including recently”
The only way you “fail” is if you tell them the you don’t smoke then the test results prove that you do.

Baker15 · 08/07/2018 18:18

They said on the phone they would test us both I think it’s a standard thing now in some clinics. So just constantly worrying now until appt. yeah I think it’s the breath test one

MrsJayy · 08/07/2018 18:26

When I was quitting smoking I used to go to the chemist for the breath test sometimes I would have a sneaky one at the weekends but by the time i went my CM levels were back to normal.i can see why you are stressing but it should be fine just tell him no more sneaky ciggies.

Baker15 · 08/07/2018 18:30

Yeah he’s done so well for months and months but has been so stressed with work and he just made a big mistake and regrets it.i could’ve killed him lol. I really hope it’s going to be ok.

Lauren83 · 08/07/2018 18:34

Are you with a fully NHS clinic or a private clinic with NHS patients? Usually once your GP refers you the clinic are happy that the GP feels you meet the criteria so don't usually check themselves as long as the GP is happy with the referral (obviously PP said she got tested so I can see that's not the case everywhere) it's not a Northwest clinic is it?

Baker15 · 08/07/2018 18:40

Yeah it’s a fully NHS clinic. Says on paper work they will test each couple and lady said on the phone aswell. Must be a new thing they’ve brought in because my friend who done all this didn’t have to get tested. Just don’t want that silly mistake to ruin us getting funded

EmmaGoldman1 · 08/07/2018 18:41

Carbon monoxide stays in your system for about 24hrs after smoking so it will be fine. As far as I'm aware that's the only test they can do. (The puffer one- it's testing carbon monoxide levels in your lungs) That's what a smoking cessation nurse told me.
By the sound of it, it was just a one off but if he feels he's in danger of relapsing, maybe suggest a vape - 95% less harmful than cigarettes according to Public Health England. It's a tough habit to quit. Nicotine is as addictive as herion but about as harmful as caffeine. It's all the other nasty stuff in cigarettes that's so damaging.
Good luck to you both Flowers

Thank you so much, you are making me feel better :) just want it to be Thursday so I don’t spend the week worrying

WhyDoesItAlways · 08/07/2018 19:22

We got tested too. It was just a breath test and neither of us smoke/have smoked. I think the test is quite sensitive as DP is a motorcyclist and they said that could cause a positive test because of the pollution he picks up from cars. But I'm sure a few fags on friday will be gone by Thursday.

Good luck with the treatment.

Baker15 · 08/07/2018 19:26

Aw really. Did he pass it? Thank you very much :)

WhyDoesItAlways · 08/07/2018 22:07

Yeah he passed luckily!

Baker15 · 08/07/2018 22:10

I can’t relax :(((((

MrsJayy · 08/07/2018 22:22

Poor love keep posting here till Thursday Flowers

WhyDoesItAlways · 08/07/2018 22:55

Yes, let us know how it goes. Fingers crossed for you but I'm absolutely sure it will be fine.

Baker15 · 09/07/2018 09:16

Thank you everyone

November150 · 09/07/2018 10:28

I should’ve mentioned aswell if the worst happens and my OH fails what happens then? Also I have one blocked tube does that mean if he fails they won’t go ahead with anything?

November150 · 10/07/2018 07:48

I’m sick with worry, I really don’t want to go 😢😢

BlueBug45 · 10/07/2018 09:51

OP take it one step at a time. If he's telling the truth he won't fail.

Lauren83 · 10/07/2018 10:46

I'm sure he will be fine, if it fails they will likely delay funding until a later date and retest him

November150 · 10/07/2018 11:20

I really hope he hasn’t been having more than I know about. Would they even delay treating me for my blocked tube aswell? This whole process is so hard as it is and I really don’t want this worry

WhyDoesItAlways · 10/07/2018 11:39

I would think they would send him to the stop smoking service and retest at a later date although they never actually told us what would happen if one of us failed the test.

Are you having IVF and treatment for a blocked tube? I would have thought it would be the tube first and then IVF if that doesn't work? When I had preliminary fertility treatment before IVF we weren't tested for smoking. It was only after the initial treatment didn't work and they put us forward for IVF that they did the smoking test.

November150 · 10/07/2018 11:51

Even if we say he stopped ages ago would they still send him? Can’t cope with this worry.
So I’ve had 5 rounds of clomid as that’s the only thing that makes me ovulate so I just assumed that after that next step is IUI/IVF? Do u think they would still treat my blocked tube even if he does fail?
