I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thanks this is encouraging to hear.

Adnama1234 · 12/09/2018 20:33

Thanks il see how I get on with this new one. I was advised against taking promethazine every night which obviously didn’t help because you can’t predict the night before how you’re going to feel the next day. I knew it would have some sedative effect because it’s prescribed as a sleep aide also, biut didn’t find it helped with sickness. Fingers crossed the new medication will be different

Chivari · 12/09/2018 21:07

Hope you feel a bit better soon @tinyradish just get lots of rest. Sips of water if you can. Have you tried the water test? Where you set yourself targets I.e. drink half a cup of water every 15 mins

Foodylicious · 12/09/2018 21:36

Hi Adnama1234 just curious as to why you were advised against taking Promethazine every night?

I have been taking it for nearly 30 weeks now, with the odd missed night or two when I tried to stop taking it or forgot it.

Took it throughout last pregnancy too

I have been fortunate that one at night has been just enough to make it manageable.

Along with a good antacid. Ranitidine twice a day has really helped along with the promethazine

LucindaE · 12/09/2018 21:45

Goodness, the thread continues busy. Welcome back to MamaBear. Congratulations on your pregnancy. I hope cyclizine does the trick for you. If not, there are certainly stronger meds they can try. As I always say, a good anti acid like Omprazole or Ranitdine often helps masively. Can anyone help out with the one year old baby?
Tinyradish Welcome. I wish I could advise you about upping your dose of cyclizine. However, the doctors should be able to advise or for that matter, Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 will be able to phone back with good advice.
Adhama1234 Welcome. I'm glad you've had good advice already on Cyclizine. You'll find lots of support on this thread.
applesin I am glad you've got Ondansetron!
Chivari Mother Hen flaps and clucks and says 'Do try and take it easy'. Congratulations on getting back to work, but sufferers on here rush back to work too early so often. I am glad Cyzline has helped you.
tinyradish The same! Congratulations but do try and avoid overdoing it - I know easier said than done.
SeaEagleFeather Great advice as ever. Congratulations to your sister on her pregnancy. I hope she escapes too. If not, she's got a sister who will be able to give the best of advice.
BirthdayKake Great advice from everyone. Best of luck with the doctors.
Unbreakable2017 Was it you who mentioned Acupunture? I had it, and it really helped, as I suffered back in the dark ages and I had a doctor who refused all meds. I was very dehydrated when I went in despair to the practitioner, who said if I stayed unable to retain water that afternoon I must report to A and E without passing go, but thankully, it really helped and I started to get better from then on. However, that was a practitioner such as I have never encountered again who went back to the far east, sadly. People on here have had it - FluffyWhiteKittens for one - and been helped by it, but not as much as me. I think it takes massive skill to find the exact place, and that makes a difference between a reasonab ly effective treatment, and a brilliant one. It is also so expensive.
Silversplodge I so agree with others, I would bypass the doctor if you have other symptoms of dehydration and go to A and E.
Olivecake and Boredoftryingusernames and everyone - great advice.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Ah and Foodylicious Great advice, sorry I missed you. I am glad meds are keeping things bearable.

SeaEagleFeather · 12/09/2018 22:46

tinyradish don't take it more than 3 times a day unless you've talked to your doctor.

Apart from anything else, and there are several 'anything elses' to consider! then if you overdo cyclizine it can actually have a counterproductive effect. IN the right doses it's great though.

Its a really good idea to rest as much as you can, tiny, so dont feel guilty for going to bed when you got home :D

I don't know why someone would say dont take promethezine every night either ...

Thanks lucinda ... she hasn't caught yet but I'm clucking already for her =)

Aw12345 · 13/09/2018 03:57

Hello lovely ladies :-)

Sorry for the random post but just want to say that I suffered with HG and was very active on this thread from about 10-20 weeks (this thread got me through tbh!).

HG is horrendous. So awful. I absolutely hated every second of my pregnancy but just want to say to anyone suffering now to that it is 100% worth it in every way and you'll be so proud of yourself for surviving.

Hang in there lovely ladies xx

Mammabear13 · 13/09/2018 10:12

Thanks Lucinda. Cyclizine has done enough to get me through in the past at a sick but manageable level although you are right, I had forgotten how much ranitidine helped in my second pregnancy when I started it sooner. I will make sure to ask for some next week. My 5 year old can help out somewhat with the 1 year old as she is home schooled so I am not completely on my own and he loves to just sit by her but other than that we're on our own, no family near by. I have spent some time the last couple of days bulk cooking whilst I can still hack it so there's some food in the freezer for hubby to sort dinner when he gets in from work (the time he gets in the kids will need to eat sharpish so he can't cook from scratch in the week)

tiny If the Cyclizine isn't quite doing it for you, which I totally get, I would suggest asking for ranitidine go with it as Lucinda suggests above - it helped settle the acid in my stomach so I wasn't throwing that up as much, which gave the Cyclizine a bether chance of working.

Birthdaykake You're right we are about the same - it's nice to have someone right in it with me. It can be so isolating when many have no clue. What a lifesaver this thread is!

tinyradish · 13/09/2018 11:29

Thank you for all for your advice & words of wisdom :) I will persevere a bit longer & if no improvement will ask the Dr for additional medication.

& you are absolutely correct about the resting/taking it easy - unable to go to work today so yesterday was a one of by the looks of it. Today is not a good day at all.

It's lovely that you take the time to respond to everyone @LucindaE I think everyone must really appreciate it. But how are you?!

The water test sounds like a great idea @chivari definitely must try harder to drink.

Hope everyone is getting through Thursday OK!

dellabrew · 13/09/2018 11:33

Hello ladies - mind if I join?

Just been to the doctors this morning and was prescribed with Prochlorperazine tablets, really hoping they will help as this is literally hell. I asked him if he thought I had HG and he wouldnt commit and went really vague and said without a blood test he didnt know...

I'm 10 +3 with my first, and just being sick constantly, I cant keep anything down and have basically given up eating as a result - only way any water stays down if i do tiny sips, but even that mostly comes back up. I have lost nearly 2 stone ....I'm big anyway but surely thats not a good sign :( I'm feeling really down, so isolated I've just been in bed for the last 4 weeks I have zero energy ...really struggling to cope with this :( !

Chivari · 13/09/2018 11:40

Sorry you're feeling so bad @dellabrew you need to get yourself back to the GP and get some answers! Have they tested your urine yet? It sounds like you will likely have Ketones in there and may be severely dehydrated which would mean a hospital trip.

Have you tried any other meds?

dellabrew · 13/09/2018 11:52

No this is the first meds I;ve been given, I've just been struggling on and really hoping that it would get better but its just got worse so finally went to the dr. (I probably should have gone earlier!) They tested my urine at the 8 week appointment and although I was being sick a lot, 'i was managing to drink fine then so I doubt it would have said I was dehydrated - he didnt test for it today. Really dont want to have to end up in hospital :(

Hotchocolate86 · 13/09/2018 12:58

Hi dellabrew it does sound quite a lot like HG. It might be worth you getting some ketostix so you can check your urine yourself. I got mine off amazon. If you do have ketones I’d highly recommend going to hospital for some fluids. I can understand not wanting to. It’s the last thing you feel like doing when you are so unwell but they really do help so much. Some people have had success with keeping down sips of fizzy drinks when water won’t stay down. Is that worth a try?

Chivari · 13/09/2018 15:34

I am on Cyclizine @dellabrew which has really helped me. I still have queasy times in the day and I'm completely exhausted most of the time, but I am back doing most of what I did before including back at work.

Another thing I find helps with the nausea is gavison double action tablets and peppermint tea. They really settle my stomach.

silversplodge · 13/09/2018 16:11

Hello again to all and hoping some are having an ok day.
The latest med my GP has given me is thiamine and I can't find huge amounts about this on the internet. It seems to be vitamin B1 and i can find much more about B6 instead - im worried she's got confused! Has anyone else been given this and if so what dose please? It hasnt come in a box and so no leaflet to read, it's come in a brown bottle of pills.
The internet says you need 1.4mg daily, pregnacare has 3mg in it and my GP has given me 100mg twice a day!

Foodylicious · 13/09/2018 18:26

silversplodge definitely go back to your pharmacy . They should have picked up on this

It is b6 that is often taken in doses of 50-100mg in addition to some anti sickness meds in pregnancy

Thiamine at higher doses is often given to people with long term alcohol use.
Seems GP has got confused along the way

Foodylicious · 13/09/2018 18:28

If you do want to buy your own vit b6, I bought mine in Superdrugs.
Boots only seemed to have the 10mg tablets in stock.

Mammabear13 · 13/09/2018 20:21

Oh my goodness silversplodge that definitely doesn't sound right. Foody is right, vit B6 (pyridoxine) is given to help with sickness, you should get back to the Pharmacy as soon as you can & I would be ringing the doctors too to make sure the mistake is documented. For what it's worth I had B6 in my last pregnancy for a while, although I was never sure how much it helped but didn't want to stop in case it was!

Hi dellabrew It sounds like you are doing amazingly well given you have only just got some medication. If you don't find they help there are plenty of others you can try so don't worry about that. Just go back in a few days if no (or not enough) difference. Lucinda normally puts the details of the helpline you can call to get more information and they are really great. I find weeks 8-12 the hardest, it is so isolating and depressing, I honestly could not see how I would make it to the end and now my little monkey is about to turn 1. Try not to worry about if you do need the hospital - a drip can be a very refreshing break even with the faff of getting in etc. Hang in there Flowers

Hotchocolate86 · 13/09/2018 20:28

silversplodge I was prescribed 50mg of thiamine per day early on in this pregnancy. I didn’t actually end up taking it as no one seemed to know if it was ok to take with my thyroid medication. I’d definitely query it though, especially at that high dose.

Foodylicious · 13/09/2018 21:03

dellabrew the info re useful links and sickness support line number etc are on the first post on page 1 on this thread Smile

LucindaE · 13/09/2018 21:56

deliberew Welcome. I am glad you have got meds, but while I am not medically trained, I never heard of Hyperemesis being diagnosed via a blood test before. These days they don't usually have the strict definition about weight loss they had before, but two stones' weight loss sounds dramatic.I so agree with others, do invest in some kesostix, online or from a chemists, to check for ketones. They take these seriously at hospital. You may be dehydraed and need fluids as others say. The number for Pregnancy Sickness Support is 024 76538 2020. They will ring you back with good advice about effective meds. Also, as I always say, a good anti acid like Ranitidine can make a huge difference. Some fluids that might help: Flat full sugar coke, ice lollies, ice cubes, the juice of tinned fruit, fizzy water, soda water, Dr Pepper, Lucoazade, fizzy orange, lemonade, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), Robinson's fruit drinks and sips of chocolate milkshake(maybe soya). Foods of a sort include cuppa soup, Scotch pancakes, nibbles of chips and crisps, tinned fruit, slices of melon and mango, baked potatoes and cheap ice cream.
tinyradish Thank you for asking. Don't worry about me. I suffered years ago. My daughter is grown up now and I am Mother Hen on this thread.
Aw12345 What a lovely message of encouragement. I am so glad that the thread helped you. Thanks for posting. Flowers
[flowers} too to Foodylicious SeaEagleFeather Mamabear Chivari Hotchocolate Bored and everyone, and great advice about B6. Waves to silversplodge and everyone.

Hope everyone is ok as can be. I'm surprised I have nausea and good aversions at 4 weeks. This is early even for me. I hope I'm slightly further on than I thought... Doctors today to hopefully get some meds. Please be a sympathetic doctor!!

Foodylicious · 14/09/2018 06:53

Good luck BirthdayKake

dellabrew · 14/09/2018 07:26

Thanks so much everyone, I've ordered some ketostix so thats a start :) And yes I will go to hospital if I need to...just dont love the thought! Oh well all part of the fun Hmm Its good for me to hear from people who have got through it, just seems never ending atm!
