What size clothes for new born.

Friends and family want to start buying clothes for baby. I'm still pregnant. What size should I tell them? New born, 0-3 months?

Agree, both. Ask for seasonally appropriate 6-12 months too. Everyone buys 3-6 when baby arrives and then you get to 6 months with no clothes! Also 6-12 months growth is slower so you get more wear from them.

Depends if you're expecting a big baby or not? I knew mine weren't going to fit newborn so didn't bother...started in first size (slightly bigger) and then went into 0-3 pretty quickly.

So tough. We had to go out and buy tiny baby clothes for ds1 and ds2 as we didn't have any and newborn clothes swamped them

0-1 month is available in most stores and fit my 10 pound baby ok

So difficult to answer this. My baby was predicted to be "big" - at least 4kg I was told on more than one occasion going off scans. He was a huge 3.3kg (7lb 3oz) when he came. And then he was slow to gain weight. We had plenty of clothes from 3 months up to 2 yrs as gifts. We had to buys lots of new born and 1 month clothes. He didn't fit into the 3 month ones till at least 6 months.

I would get both, then only cut tags and wash a few bits so you can return things if they don’t fit.

I had to run out and get tiny baby clothes for my little girl, friends had babies who were straight into 0-3 as they were very long - wait and see what weight/length/build your baby is before getting too much!

I'm due on 24th and I have basically gone with mainly 0-3 months, got a few 0-1 months. I've also got 3-6 months ready and some 6-9 months.

I have big babies so I only buy 0-3. I wouldn’t bother buying tiny baby unless you’re at risk of a premature delivery. Buy a few items in newborn but not too many and leave tags on so you can return if your baby is too big. I made the mistake of removing tags on newborn clothes that I couldn’t use for my DS.

We got newborn. Then after the baby was born we realised we actually needed size tiny baby (up to 7lb 5oz), as baby was 6lb 7oz.

Also be aware how quick they can grow my 3kg baby was in 3-6 by two months despite being swamped by newborn when he was born. He also hated clothes so was mostly in a nappy and vest the first month or so.

Tell them to get bigger sizes, 3-6 months, 6-9 months they grow out of the newborn stuff in no time. Mine started in up to 1 month clothes as she was a bigger baby and we didn't get to use many of the newborn clothes given to us, so if you're measuring big just get a couple of newborn bits and some in bigger sizes.

I would also suggest they think about the seasons, you don't need a jumper or snowsuit in summer.

Newborn or 0-1 month will (fairly obviously) only fit an average baby for 4 weeks, so you (fairly obviously) probably don't want more than about 10 outfits in that size even allowing for needing 2 or 3 outfits some days due to exploding nappies and milk coming back up...

My 9lb baby was somehow smaller than my 8.5 lb and 8.6lb ones so weight isn't much of a guide.

I'd ask for mainly slightly bigger stuff as it'll get more wears.

We were given a beautiful 0-1 month snowsuit for a late September baby - it looked ridiculously small, like a doll's outfit, next to him when it turned cold enough to use it in mid November.

Get them to buy older clothes as the first 3 months baby will just sleep 24/7 ..so won't get to make a lot of clothes changes and they grow up so fast in the 1st 3 months.

People always get too many clothes for tiny babies. Could relatives get some when the baby is here? You don't know what you will get... I got a very long skinny baby and nothing fitted with feet!

Ask them to buy 3-6 and 6-9 as people tend to buy outfits which I found impractical for younger babies, mines lived in sleepsuits and vests and rompers when it's hot. Get a few of each smaller size, don't take all the tags off I made that mistake He didn't wear a lot he was only in newborn for 2 weeks he was 7lb 1 and not particularly long. My friends baby was 8lb 10 and in tiny baby! They vary so much. He's in 0-3 and some stuff fits some doesn't yet, which is handy try and buy from different shops as the sizes vary.

My baby was born at 8lb 5oz and I had to buy tiny baby and first size clothes as newborn didn’t fit him. He’s now 11 weeks and only just wearing 0-3 so make sure people get you different sizes ☺️

0-1 is the best at the start but you'll probably get loads of all different sizes.

My first baby was 9lb 7oz and because we knew that he was a big boy we'd only bought 3-6 months. He was so squidged up that DH had to rush out and buy some newborn size babygros. At least have a couple of little ones

But a few newborn/first size bits yourself as even the heaviest babies can be tiny for a little while.

Then ask everyone else for 0-3, 3-6 and 6-9 bearing in mind the weather at those ages.

It's worth looking at the different labels for 'Newborn' clothes as well, I have some newborn stuff from Sainsbury's that says up to 7lb and some from Boots that says up to 9.9lbs so they will most likely fit differently and last for different lengths of time.

I had way too many clothes for the first 6months due to presents. Can you steer them in a different direction? Sheets? Sleeping bag? Hooded towels? Muslins?
