How long to conceive

Just out of interest....

How long did it take you to conceive your first child after coming off the pill?

I have been on the contraceptive Yasmin for 11 years. I have had the occasional pill break since then and I do seem to get regular periods- although I've never tracked.

My boyfriend and I have decided I'll come off the pill in August to start trying, but I'm interested to know, how long on average it may take us!

I was never on the pill but we have been trying since christmas 2017.
We did use lube the first 3 times which may have lowered our chances, we then switched to baby oil and now I am 5 weeks pregnant 😊
Remember not to stress about how long it takes, everyone is different! I know that is easier said than done! Blush

DD1 8/9 months, DD2 15 months (but was still breastfeeding for 12 of those).

confuddledconfuddle · 04/05/2018 08:08

Dd1 19 months with lots of investigations and all normal
Now 10 weeks pregnant and it took 2 months

Hardheadedwoman39 · 04/05/2018 08:14

I came off the pill last September and it took 3 months, I had two light periods then one really heavy then pregnant. This makes me think the first two were withdrawal / pill type periods and the last one a proper one.... I had acupuncture after the last one and then was pregnant two weeks later!

Ds1 straight away
Ds2 straight away
Ttc#3 on month 4 in tww

BertieBotts · 04/05/2018 08:20

I did a lot of stats crunching :o

The chances are it will take anything from 1-8 months. The average amount of time is 3 or 4 months. You have about a 20-25% chance to conceive each cycle. Doctors say if you've been trying for a year and nothing happens (To give you the 8 months plus a couple extra plus a couple to count for missed fertile periods etc) to seek medical advice in case there are problems preventing conception. If this does happen try not to worry as most are fixable.

Good luck and happy trying!

DS first month trying
Pregnancy 2 was a miscarriage but first month trying
Pregnancy 3 took 7 months to conceive but was also a miscarriage
Pregnancy 4 was twins on our second month of trying

PotteringAlong · 04/05/2018 08:23

Ds1- 7 weeks
Ds2 - 17 months
Ds3 - 5 months

usernotfound0000 · 04/05/2018 08:27

I came off the pill in November and was pregnant in the July. This pregnancy, I came off the pill in Sept 2016 and had a bfp in October 2017 which sadly ended in MC and then another in March 2018, so I'm 13 weeks now.

hammeringinmyhead · 04/05/2018 08:56

14 months! I have long cycles though so about 10 cycles.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 04/05/2018 08:59

These are some figures on how long it takes 'on average':

Research suggests that out of 100 couples having regular, unprotected sex:

20 get pregnant within a month
70 get pregnant within 6 months
85 get pregnant within a year
90 get pregnant within 18 months
95 get pregnant in 2 years
Statistically, the average rate for getting pregnant in England and Wales is 77.8 conceptions per thousand women. Nearly 80% of those conceptions result in having a baby.
www.webmd.boots.com/pregnancy/guide/getting-started-on-getting-pregnant

As that final sentence suggests, there is a difference between 'getting pregnant' and 'having a baby' for a sizeable minority of women, so the average time to actually having a successful pregnancy is going to be slightly longer - I first fell pregnant after 8 months trying, but it took 16 months for me to have a pregnancy that made it out of the first few weeks, so those stats would put me in the '85 within a year', but from our point of view it was the '90 within 18 months'.

Sunshine97 · 04/05/2018 09:04

I came off the pill in August and it took 8 months for me to get pregnant, I'm now 6 weeks pregnant

OhhhEck · 04/05/2018 09:09

I was never on the pill, but took me nearly 7 years to have my DC.

Although I had a septate uterus which kept resulting in multiple miscarriages and failed IVF. (The septate wasn't diagnosed until after all of this) I underwent a Hysteroscopic metroplasty after I found out, and we finally had a successful pregnancy.

cherryblossom4 · 04/05/2018 09:40

Thanks everyone for you replies.

It seems unlikely it would happen straight away by the sound of it! I just like to know so I can have a realistic expectation. Hopefully no problems emerge! X

twobambinos · 04/05/2018 09:48

cherryblossom4 it can happen straight away but there is no way of knowing unfortunately

DD1 1st month off the pill after years similar to yourself and yasmin
DD2 4 months to a MC and 4 more months to a successful pregnancy after only a year on the pill
DC3 1st month off the pill after 5 years on it. im nearly 10 years older now than i was with DC1 and after DC2 taking a while but still not long in the grand scheme of things i thought this one would take a year.

cherryblossom4 · 04/05/2018 15:20

Thanks, it's so interesting @twobambinos - it hasn't taken too long for yours. I hope I'm as lucky. A few months is fine, but hopefully it's not too long x

I kept notes when I came off pill, here’s my notes

Came off the pill - Thursday 21st sep 2017
Last pill- Wednesday 20th sep 2017 (just finished 2nd strip)
Withdrawal bleed started: 22nd sep 2017
Withdrawal bleed ended: 28th sep 2017

(Try between cycle days 15-22

1st cycle after coming off pill (23rd sep- 24th Oct) = 31 days
Ovulate cycle day 20/21
Ovulated 12/13th Oct (pos opk 12th Oct)
Period came on 24th oct (11dpo)

2nd Cycle- (24th Oct- 21st Nov)= 28 days
Ovulate cycle day 16/17
Ovulated on 8/9th Nov (pos opk 8th Nov)
Period came on 21st Nov

3rd Cycle (SMEP)- (21st Nov-19th Dec)= 28 days
Ovulate cycle day 17
Ovulated on 7th Dec (pos opk 6th and 7th Dec)
Period came on: it didn’t, I was pregnant!
Found out: 17th Dec with Frer

mindutopia · 04/05/2018 17:24

I was also on Yasmin before my first (and 2nd). I was on it for probably 14 years at that point (since I was 18). I got pregnant with my dd 2nd month after I stopped. After I had her, I went back on Yasmin for another 4 years. Stopped and then got pregnant again 2nd month. I unfortunately had a mc with that pregnancy but then got pregnant with my ds the first month after. So for me all really quickly. My cycles came back perfectly, 28 days, like clockwork right away.

tappitytaptap · 04/05/2018 17:25

3 months for DS, 4 months for DC2. So looks about average!

cherryblossom4 · 04/05/2018 17:56

@Gem173 wow, great notes! I plan to do the same when I come off the pill. You can almost see your cycle regulating more and more each month. Still happened pretty quickly! X

Cycle 4 for first pregnancy which sadly ended in MMC at 12 weeks. Didn't go back on the pill, and conceived on cycle 3 after my MMC. Currently 28 weeks!

Scout1774 · 04/05/2018 19:09

3 months!

MyBreadIsEggy · 04/05/2018 19:10

First try with both DC’s, 17 months apart

SoyDora · 04/05/2018 19:13

13 months after coming off the pill. My second was conceived in the first month of trying (hadn’t gone back on hormonal contraception) and am now pregnant with DC 3 (conceived 2nd month of trying), again didn’t go back on to hormonal contraception after number 2.
