Hello! I’ve changed my user name it was user then a load of numbers...anyway point is I’ve posted before. Anyhoo...I really need some experienced lovely mummies to help me out. My situation is v complicated see ‘not the Disney version the Jeremy Kyle one’ thread for background info! I need to know exactly what I need, I can google lists of baby essentials but they’re trying to sell you stuff..I want the word on the street, what’s worth buying and what isn’t. Is a Moses basket the second coming in first baby beds or is it flushing money down the crapper? Do I need one of those electric musical rocking things?! Or should I just hold the sprout and dance?!...hope you get my point please help. I’m stuck between a baby and a hard place! Thanks mums. So list of basic items, I need or that will just save my tired sleep deprived ass. Ex party girl needs help ASAP. 😫

don't bother with a baby monitor. Never really understood what they were for anyway.

Thanks Smeaton, I do know asking for lists at half 10 is crackers as we’re all tired but I’m thinking like Electrical goods, what prams, car seats the pricey items. I can wait for the morning crew. 👍🏻

Don't need a baby monitor or a baby bath. In fact, quite a lot of gadgets are totally unnecessary. As long as the baby has somewhere safe and warm to sleep and is fed, clean and clothed, that is all that matters. I do recommend gro bags when the baby is big enough for them though.

Pram and car seat probably essential
Sling/baby carrier - or wait and go to a sling library or get a baby carrying consultant to come to your house.
Bottle gear if you want (some people will tell you not to if you want to bf)
We have a bouncy chair but my son didn't like it til he was about 3 months old so not an essential.
We had a Moses basket for downstairs naps (in those good old days when he would nap on his own) and a Chico next to me for night time.
Changing mat, nappies, bum cream, wipes. Changing bag - 8 would recommend a rucksack.
Ummm... some babygros. Muslins.
Don't bother with : bibs, booties, you don't need toys yet or anything like that.

Poppylizzyrose · 21/04/2018 22:40

Oooh what are gro bags? Can I say I know completely zero. Ask me about wine, nightlife, poker strip (how I got in this mess) lol. Baby gear I’m a novice.

Ah gro bags are ace. Baby sleeping bags that fasten under their arms.

londonloves · 21/04/2018 22:42

Baby baths are a bit pointless, you can use a washing up bowl when they're tiny. I have never used a baby monitor in nearly seven months as he's almost always in the same room as me.

Poppylizzyrose · 21/04/2018 22:44

Also I was thinking a rocker might be good idea as I do have a Dog. So baby being off the ground would be safest I’m thinking...plus thanks ladies! I am going to try and sleep soon. I’m going for a mooch around baby planet Tomos, not buying anything yet but ideas are great as I’m clueless. My mums old school, she’s not down with some of the Modern life saving baby bits.

A couple of giant muslins are useful if you have a baby that likes being swaddled.
You can maybe get some stuff second hand on Facebook marketplace/gumtree etc. Are you in UK? (You sound American Smile)

4GreenApples · 21/04/2018 22:46

Gro bags are little sleeping bags for babies. Fantastic as they stop baby from wriggling out of the covers.

Only thing to bear in mind with gro bags is, baby needs to be over a certain minimum size (around 8 lb IIRC) before they can be put in a gro bag.

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 21/04/2018 22:46

I'm on my second and she's very different from my first so you may have to go with the flow!
First - loved her grobag and cot from day one. Wasn't into Moses basket at all.

Second baby- 3 weeks old- decided we didn't want Moses basket this time so put straight into cot. Baby was having none of it so we borrowed a cocoonababy. This is amazing and would definitely recommend.

First baby loved the swing, second has no time for it.

Both loved/ love the vibrating bouncer.

Both needed lots of Muslin cloths!

Don't know if your ff or bf- first loved dr. Brown bottles.
Second- spent 80 euro on dr brown bottles and sterileser and had terrible wind. Had to change to mam bottles.

So basically you may just have to wait and see!

Poppylizzyrose · 21/04/2018 22:47

Haha sound?! I live in the uk not American. But my sort of speech and comedy can seem so I’m told lol.

Ah ok cool if you're in UK you can check out local NCT nearly new sales.
You're gonna be fine!

forevermoree · 21/04/2018 22:48

Definitely sleeping bags. That's something I didn't buy but I LOVE them now

elQuintoConyo · 21/04/2018 22:51

Ikea Antilop high chair for when baby is bigger. Light, easy to clean (in the bath/garden for a hose down, or in the dishwasher).

Ours wouldn't sleep anywhere but on us so we never used Moses basket or cot. Cot got sold still in its box!

Babygym he loved when very little, like 4 months or so (mat on the floor with things hanging over to punch or kick - our baby LOVED it).

Grobags are basically sleeping bags that babies wear - half dress, half sleeping bag! Very useful.

We didn't buy an awful lot, no muslins, no monitors, no nappy bin, one travel system that lasted from birth to 3yo, no matching nursery furniture and we didn't paint his room especially. Most of what we did buy was Ikea - like the changing table (now repainred and used as a craft table for ds). They also do fantastic stuff like weaning bibs, plastic bowls and cutlery etc when they start eating solids.

Congratulations, you're in for a fun ride! Flowers

Poppylizzyrose · 21/04/2018 22:52

Yes! I want a vibrating bouncer...although I’m slightly freaked out its their first vibrater haha...thanks so much all. If you think of anything else please let me know. I’m also wondering about those weird plastic baby chairs people put on the tables...they like make your baby sit up? Anyone got any experience with those?

They're called bumbo seats I think, I got one second hand, it's like a halfway house before a proper high chair. Didn't use it til five months tho so I don't think you need to worry about that yet.
If you want to bf job could get a nursing pillow - they're actually quite handy for bottle feeding too.

Poppylizzyrose · 21/04/2018 22:55

Quinton thanks! Yeah I shouldn’t buy things for the sake of it. Being first time Mum and single I’m just having to make all these choices. I will be on a budget so do need to rein myself in.
