Hi all,

I am currently 8wks 3days. I’ve had brown spotting on and off during this pregnancy but a scan at 6wks 3 showed a heartbeat and all looked ok. Spotting stopped.

This morning, I’ve had more significant red blood with some tiny clots. I’m expecting the worst. Everything is closed with it being the bank holiday and I know it’s just a waiting game, but I feel truly awful. Any words of advice? I’m a bit scared about what is coming xx

Hi, sending you big hugs. Do you have a number for out of hours midwife? If not you could ring nhs 111 for advice? xx

Weelis02 · 02/04/2018 17:35

I would phone 111 and get some advice. I bled in both of my pregnancies. My 1st was just a bit, the 2nd was so much blood, like period amount. Baby was totally fine, they said there was a clot beside the baby and that's probably what it was. I even had so much pain but baby was fine.
Please phone nhs24, just to put your mind at rest x

Moonflower12 · 02/04/2018 17:42

I bled at about the same time as you. All was fine- she is now a strapping 21 year old!

Moonflower12 · 02/04/2018 17:42

Sorry- meant to say ring 111 for advice though.

DRSLondon · 02/04/2018 17:56

Can you go to A&E for a scan so you know what's going on? I'm sorry you are going through this. It's so heartbreaking x

RD15 · 02/04/2018 18:44

Hi ladies, thank you so much for the responses. I did ring the hospital this morning and they says if the bleeding was severe or the pain was significant then I should go to A&E. It hasn’t been severe and I haven’t had any pain. It’s now dark brown. I don’t know what to think- it’s the uncertainty of it all that’s making me anxious xx

As someone else mentioned, there can be small bruises/blood clots that come away and cause the bleeding. Try not to panic.

ClareB83 · 02/04/2018 18:49

I know how awful this is OP. I had two bleeds in this pregnancy and both involved a long wait before I could have scan at EPU (long haul flight and an overnight wait after landing).

In my case everything was fine despite dramatic bleeds, but the waiting and worrying afterwards was still awful.

So no suggestions just sympathy and to say it's not always a miscarriage (currently 31w with twins despite those bleeds at 9+11w).

RD15 · 02/04/2018 19:18

Thank you. I’m glad to hear it worked out for you guys. I’m just so drained with it all now- this on and off bleeding is just so stressful. I haven’t relaxed for a second during this pregnancy. I guess what will be will be xx

ClareB83 · 02/04/2018 19:47

I know how you feel OP. I bled on and off including two big bleeds from 9-15 weeks. It was draining.

When the bleeding stopped the worry didn't go as there's always something with pregnancies and children eg worries about the 20 week scan, worries about growth, worries about the babies coming early.

But the bleeding was the worst. It just feels so ominous even when it's just brown spotting because you think it might lead to another big bleed. So cry, be sad, try to distract yourself and fingers crossed!

RD15 · 02/04/2018 19:53

@ClareB83 thank you so much for your response- it’s comforting to hear from someone who understands how draining it all is. I completely agree about there always being something to worry about. I’ll be sure to update this thread one way or the other xx

I would go see your gp who can refer you for a scan but if it's brown then it's old blood. I'd imagine it's from implantation bleeding. I had a bleed though in my only successful pregnancy. Once in the early weeks and again at 22 weeks.

Almostthere15 · 02/04/2018 20:16

It's so stressful isn't it. Just adding that I had this too and currently 21 weeks with all seeming well.

After my early bleeds (5 weeks and 7 weeks) which are more spotting I had a severe bleed at 10 weeks and thought all was lost, there were small clots and it was red but settled to brown over 24 hrs. It turned out it was straining from constipation. That's not to say you shouldn't take it seriously, just that itbisnt always bad news. I'll keep everything crossed for you

SparklyScourer · 02/04/2018 20:22

If they have done a scan and there was a heartbeat can you push for another scan? I had the bruise/clot thing at the same time and they sent me away without a scan just checked my cervix, but I couldn’t cope with the two week wait they recommended before taking another pregnancy test to tell me if I was still pregnant or not! I went to another hospital to early pregnancy unit and they did a scan which showed the hematoma (can’t spell it though sorry!)

I hope everything goes well for you and it’s that, bleeding is so scary in pregnancy!

milney25 · 02/04/2018 20:45

@RD15 I had similar to you. Spotting from the moment I found out at four weeks, right through to 11 weeks. I had a few bigger bleeds, but mostly just bleeding noticed when I went to the loo. I've got through my 20 weeks scan now and I've never been given any reason for it.

Those 7 weeks were the longest and toughest weeks of my life. I went into the EPU several times for scans, because I needed to know what was going on. They were always very kind and generous with their time.

Keep chatting to us if you need us, it can be hard to keep talking to your partner about it xxx

Magpie24 · 02/04/2018 20:57

@RD15 sorry to hear about this. As you may remember from the other thread I've had similar and in fact yesterday I actually had some bright red after a bowel movement. It sounds like we're having a really similar pregnancy. No cramping is a great sign. Do you think your EPU will give you another scan? I have my second early scan tomorrow and am terrified.

RD15 · 02/04/2018 21:23

Thanks for all the kind words and personal experiences. I really do appreciate people taking the time. @Magpie24 we really are having a time of it aren’t we? Best wishes for your scan tomorrow. Let us know how you get on.
I’ll phone my midwife in the morning and I would have thought they’d refer me, given the nature of the bleeding this time. It was just such a shock- absolutely no warning.
Good luck for tomorrow and thanks again everyone- it really is comforting venting with people who understand how awful it feels xxx

Morning ladies,

Well, no bleeding over night and just light brown discharge this morning. I have no idea what is going on. Good luck with your scan today @Magpie24 xx

Midwives and even 111 downplay bleeding if it’s not severe and accompanied by pain. It happened to me during my first MC last year. I’d only had brown spotting which both the midwife and 111 assured me was ‘old blood’ and likely absolutely fine. It wasn’t and it’s only because I visited my GP to get a referral to EPAU that I found out I had miscarried.

I don’t want to frighten you because of course for many women, spotting can be perfectly normal but for me it wasn’t. I suggest going to see your GP and asking for a referral to EPAU to be scanned.

Magpie24 · 03/04/2018 13:17

@RD15 all went well! Am measuring exactly to my dates so made up

RD15 · 03/04/2018 16:44

@Magpie24, I’m over the moon for you! Absolutely great news! I have a scan on Friday so I’m just going to keep busy between now and then xx

RD15 · 03/04/2018 16:46

@Pinkvoid, thanks for sharing your experience- I appreciate your honesty. I know it might not be a good outcome and in some ways that’s what I’m expecting. Fingers crossed xx
