I’m having regular scans and appointments due to a small baby/high bp last time.

I had a growth scan with my 1st later on in pregnancy as the midwife felt baby was measuring small. At the scan they estimated his weight to be over 7lb, weeks later he was born at 5.4lb.

With this baby growth scans have been showing steady growth but baby is currently on the 91st percentile and at 30 weeks estimated to be 4.1lb! Head and abdomen measurements are especially high with BPD off the scale.

I have to admit I am getting a bit nervous about giving birth to a monster baby! Just wondering if others who had regular growth scans ended up having babies around their predicted weight.

I had regular growth scans at the last one they predicted 6lb 4, a week later I was induced and DD was 6lb 7. They were concerned she was small but I think 6lb 7s an average weight

ElizabethLemon · 26/03/2018 19:10

So pretty accurate for you ew, 6.7lb is a good weight. I’m worried I’m going to be having an 11lber!!

With my DS1 a 31w growth scan put him at 7lb 9oz! They couldn't give an estimated birth weight as their charts didn't go up that high!

He was born at 38w weighing 10lb 8oz, so the scan showing he'd be a Godzilla baby were pretty accurate. Grin. Fat babies are the best. Wink

But from previous threads like this I'd say more scans are inaccurate than accurate! So you may yet have a petite baby.

ew1990 · 26/03/2018 19:16

Elizabeth I was only 4lb 1 and arrived on my due date, my mums had 7 and reckons bigger babies are easier to birth

susiegrapevine · 26/03/2018 19:16

I had one growth scan at 33 weeks and the sonographer said i was having a perfectly average baby. He was 100g off being exactly on the 50th centile when he was born. However i think he was the top sonographer at the hospital or something because i also had a trainee scan me. He was training her. So i would say it depends on the sonographer and their experience.

Oysterbabe · 26/03/2018 19:30

They estimated DS to be over 9lbs at 40 weeks from the scans. He was born at 40+4 weighing 8lbs 1. So they weren't miles out but he was a normal healthy weight, not particularly big.

Lauren83 · 26/03/2018 19:32

I had an extra scan due to baby measuring on the big side during scans, at 33 weeks they estimated him as just under 6lbs and he was on the top centile line all through my pregnancy so they checked me for GD which I didn't have, I was induced at 39 weeks and had a section at 39.3 and he was 8lb 12oz and really long

ElizabethLemon · 26/03/2018 19:41

Thanks all, most scans seem to be pretty accurate so far.

I was told that the more scans they do the better in terms of getting a accurate size estimate.

I have to say no, 3 children, first one I was told he was very small would require special care - he arrived on due date 8lb 6oz!!! Second one, I was told she was very large, born week late 6lb!
Last one, I was told at 31 weeks she was at least 7lb already, I returned all purchases of newborn clothes, swapping them for 0-3, she arrived 37 weeks just under 6lb! I don't know anyone that has been correct.

neversleepagain · 26/03/2018 19:44

I had twins so was scanned regularly (13, 20, 24, 28, 22 & 34 weeks). The scans were spot on. They estimated them to be 5lb5 and 5lb8 at 34+4 and they were born the next day at 5lb4 and 5lb8.

Traininparis · 26/03/2018 19:47

I had regular scans due to gd and it was very very close for me.

Lauren83 · 26/03/2018 19:55

Sorry I should add they did estimate around 9 at term and was 8lb 12oz at 39.3 so pretty spot on

Wilberforce2 · 26/03/2018 19:56

No! I had two scans one for growth and one to check she had turned (was breech until 34 weeks). All I kept being told was that she was a big baby and expect her to be 9lb + so when she was 10 days late I was terrified, she came 11 days over due and was 8lb 4oz!

ElizabethLemon · 26/03/2018 19:58

@Memom were they regular scans or one offs? I have got a lot of smaller baby clothes but thinking that they will be useless this time!

@neversleepagain wow!

No. None of mine were. I had scans at every stage as per normal. All said he was huge.
Then scanned every 2 weeks, then moving to every week, in last trimester.
He was 7lbs. Ds1 and Ds2.
Huge amount of amniotic fluid.
Not at all accurate. Grin

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 26/03/2018 20:02

Similar to neversleep. My twins were estimated at 3 lbs 9 oz and 4lbs 12oz at 34 weeks. Born 35+2 at 3 lbs 12oz and 4 lbs 15 oz.

But I also had a very experienced fetal maternal medicine consultant for that scan.

MunsteadWood · 26/03/2018 20:08

I had an ELCS at 39 weeks and had extra scans due to concerns about growth. Scans predicted DS would be just over 7lb at birth, he was 7lb7oz.

Memom · 26/03/2018 20:09

They were regular growth scans with all 3.

boomboom1234 · 26/03/2018 20:13

I had growth scans that predicted a 9-10lb baby and mine was 7.12

kshaw · 26/03/2018 20:21

I had regular scans and she was measuring in 91st percentile all the way through, I then had another and she'd dropped to 75th estimated at 5lb 4...she came 6 weeks early (a year ago today!!) 3 days after the scan at 6lb 11...not all that accurate

SheepyFun · 26/03/2018 20:28

At 36 weeks, DD was scanned to be 6lb 7oz. She was born 3 weeks later at 6lb 8oz, and no reason to be worried about the placenta. One friend was told she'd have a 5lb baby, had a 6lb the following day.... I would take them with a pinch of salt.

ElizabethLemon · 26/03/2018 20:39

Thanks everyone. I have to say I’m feeling a bit sceptical considering what happened last time but I also want to be prepared incase he is massive!

@kshaw happy birthday to your dd!

Hi all, I've actually just created a new thread asking for any recommendations for somewhere I can have private growth scans, my first done was born abroad where I had regular growth scans and he was born at 38 weeks at 10lb 7oz. I'm curious by the comments from ladies who say they've had multiple growth scans, were these done through private clinics or with the NHS?
Thanks!

ew1990 · 26/03/2018 21:11

Mine was with nhs but only because they were concerned about her growth,

brainache78 · 26/03/2018 21:16

My DD was supposed to be very small (they said around 4lbs)- so much so that I was being scanned three times a week towards the end of my pregnancy.

She was born at 37 weeks weighing 6lbs 1.

A lot of fuss about nothing.
