I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Olivecake that sounds like a horrendous reaction to the metoclopramide! You poor thing, hope you are doing ok today. Pleased that your scan went well though, I agree it really helped me to see my little trouble causer to remind me there was a good reason for feeling so awful.
I hope they can offer you an alternative anti sickness medication though.

Hope everyone else is having a reasonable time of things? I have had a few better days, hoping my next few days at work don't screw it up again!

Hotchocolate86 · 07/06/2018 23:08

lucinda I’ve had a few better days thank you. I’m hoping I can keep it up and it’s not just a blip!
I’m glad your scan went ok olive. It really does keep your spirits up getting to see the baby is doing well.
bored good luck for the next few days at work. I hope you manage them ok.

Boredoftryingusernames · 08/06/2018 07:09

Thanks Hotchocolate, hope your better days continue too!

Troika · 08/06/2018 11:32

Hi everyone, can I join again? I’ve been on here twice in the past year but both ended in mmc.

Am now 8 weeks and sickness has been getting progressively worse. Saw the best gp ever on Monday, she was so sympathetic and not at all dismissive. First time ever a gp has taken action straight away. She even asked me which drug I wanted( although she then couldn’t prescribe odansetron). She got me admitted into epu where I had 3 litres of fluid, iv cyclizine and iv odansetron. Sent me home with cyclizine as apparently that’s thought to be the safest.

My gp was happy to do my prescription for cyclizine but said he normally prescribes domperidone so to call up if I wanted to try that instead. Any thoughts on this?

The past two days I’m back to vomiting several times a day so the cyclizine isn’t working much Sad

The good news is that I had a scan and saw a heartbeat so so far at least this baby is doing well

Hotchocolate86 · 08/06/2018 11:38

Hi troika cyclizine only works for me if i take it alongside ondansetron. I’ve never tried domperidone but maybe it’s worth trying again to get ondansetron. I have to get mine from my hospital as the local doctors can’t prescribe it. If the cyclizine doesn’t work perhaps your hospital would be willing to do the same. I’m really glad to hear you’ve had a positive scan. That’s a really good sign.

Foodylicious · 08/06/2018 19:34

Troika
I think cyclizine and Promethazine are considered 1st line treatment and domperidone can be tried if these are not effective.
Does this link help?

thingymaboob · 10/06/2018 01:30

Hello ladies! Just popping in to say hello. Sounds like a lot of you are suffering something terrible. It does pass but kit is so awful. My LO is 4.5 months old now. She's a lovely baby but that doesn't mean I've forgotten the horrors of hyperemesis. I still feel very nauseous when I breastfeed and I now have terrible travel sickness, which never affected me before. Keep going! My advice to anyone would be to take as much medication as you need. I always held back and worried, especially about ondansetron. I wish I'd taken it more and not vomited so much! Good luck ladies. Xxx

TwoDrifters · 10/06/2018 01:48

Don’t know if anyone else is up but I’m really struggling. 14+4 at the moment and no signs of nausea/sickness abating. I’ve been very weepy and self-pitying for the last couple of weeks.

Feeling like a terrible mother to my 2-yr-old as I just lie in bed all day.

And the worst thing this time round which I really don’t remember being that bad last time is the constant excess saliva and catarrh. All I seem to do all day is attempt to clear my throat and swallow foul mouthfuls of lukewarm saliva (apologies for TMI).

Is anyone else coping with this and has anyone got any amazing tips for dealing with it, please?!

Olivecake · 10/06/2018 08:03

Hi @TwoDrifters

So sorry to hear you’re having such a bad time - it really sucks doesn’t it?!

I had the excess disgusting tasting saliva in my previous pregnancy and I found it helped me more to spit it out (so gross I know) but I always kept a bowl nearby and tissues to spit into as if I swallowed it I would just feel even worse. And although I couldn’t really deal with drinking water, I kept a glass by me to swill around my mouth and rinse after spitting. It didn’t stop the saliva unfortunately but for me it worked better than swallowing as I would instantly gag.

LBelle12 · 10/06/2018 08:14

Hi all. Just to say I am almost at the end of my second HG pregnancy and feel for you all so much. I’m still on ondansetron but luckily I came home and reduced the dose around 25 weeks. It will pass so soon. Dont feel like a bad parent; you’re giving your little ones a sibling and the time you’re ill is so brief in comparison to the years ahead. You’re all so much closer than you were this time last week xxx

Olivecake · 10/06/2018 17:46

Thanks LBelle12 it’s good to be reminded there is a light at the end of the tunnel. So exciting that your little one is almost here!

I’m going back to doctors tomorrow and want to ask to change my medication but am scared to try anything new after my horrible experience with metoclopramide but what I’m on now just isn’t working :( I’ve been struggling all weekend.

I think I will ask for ondansetron and see what the Dr says- has anyone experienced bad side effects from it?

Hotchocolate86 · 10/06/2018 17:56

olive The only side effect I’ve had from the ondansetron is constipation. If the doctor will prescribe it ask for lactulose as well for the constipation.

Olivecake · 10/06/2018 18:06

Thanks Hotchocolate86 - constipation is nasty but I’ll take that over my crazy violent muscle spasms from the metoclopromide!

I have no idea if my doctor will be able to prescribe it but no harm in asking at this point.

Boredoftryingusernames · 10/06/2018 18:19

Twodrifters sorry things are still so tough. I found the excessive saliva awful too, agree that sometimes spitting it out into a tissue is better, though I made my lips even drier and sorer. It did ease around 18-20 weeks, but comes back on my worse days - was having to spit in the shower this morning (sorry TMI!).
Olivecakes definitely worth asking for ondansetron, agree with above - pretty horrific constipation (though the dehydration had already set that off), definitely take something like lactulose to help.
Having a crap day, went out but felt hot and nauseous the whole time, and now lying down to try and avoid vomiting Sad. Good to have some people popping in with pep-talks today - thanks ladies!

rotavixsucks · 11/06/2018 02:10

I followed this thread through my first pregnancy and it was a godsend though I wasn't quite confident enough to post. I'm glad it's still going and would like to join.

I'm 9 weeks pg and was hoping this time I was going to avoid the dreaded HG...unfortunately it appears not, I've given in already and been prescribed metaclopramide in the hope that I don't get into the state I was in last time (refused to see anyone until 20weeks).

So far I've spent the weekend with my body emptying itself from all orifices (sorry TMI) whilst being violently sick or sleeping off the nausea. Fortunately I'm managing to keep some lucozade down and will be trying my saviour of airwaves to hopefully get to work this morning.

Foodylicious · 11/06/2018 06:44

rotavix that sounds awful!
Any way you can have today off to rest a bit?

Did you take metaclopramide last time?

rotavixsucks · 11/06/2018 06:59

Foody, I'm reluctant to as I really want to get to 12 weeks before I tell anyone this time. Last time it was announced at work within the dept. without me wanting to tell people yet.

Feeling slightly more human now. I was on metaclopramide last time and it took the edge off. I stupidly tried lowering the dose at the end of last week as I thought I was doing ok but obviously was not ready.

LucindaE · 11/06/2018 13:13

Hello, everyone, I am so sorry for my absence.
My wretched PC is down due to microsoft updates going wrong. It should have been ready by today, but no such luck.
When I went to the library to log in, I found I was unable to post a message, and had to contact Mumsnet. The issue seems to have resolved. Only got a short while, but I'll try to catch up. You are all in my thoughts and welcome to new people from Mother Hen.

Welcome to Troika and roitavxsucks.
Troika Cyclizine can help some, others need something stronger. Don't hesitate to ask for something stronger if it doesn't work. I am so sorry about mmc's. Even one is distressing. What was your name before? I was given Domperidone for the vomiting with migraines years ago, not for the Hyperemesis before, but did to be honest think it needed a strong anti acid, for me anyway, as that got worse for me. Definitely, an an anti acid helps, like ranitidine or omprazole.
rotavxsucks I am glad the thread helped last time. Some find metocloprimiade very useful. As above, an anti acid may help a lot.
Never worry about tmi on here. I remember that escaping from all orifices, it is grim. Sad
On some drinks that may help, flat full sugar coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucoazade as rota has said, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, ice cubes, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), lemonade, fizzy orange, orange juice (if not too acid) Robinson's fruit drinks and fizzy water. Some foods of a sort, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, cuppa soup, baked potatoes, scotch pancakes, slices of melon and mango and tinned fruit; jelly too.
TwoDrifters Many try spitting into a bowl - and never worry about tmi. Some suck sweets, which help with the dreadful taste, but some say that increases the spit. Don't feel you are a bad mother; from all I have seen on these threads, your LO will forget all about this period of comparative neglect in no time, and a sibling is a priceless gift. I wish I had gone for it again, believe me.
LaBelle12 Thank you for your lovely message. I am so glad that you are feeling a lot better. Even the unlucky ones who suffer throughout, almost never feel as bad later on as in the early weeks, and most find things improve between 16 and 21 weeks.
Waves to Foodylicious Hotchocolate and everyone. Great advice from everyone.
I am sorry for anyone rudely overlooked. Back tomorrow (they are about to kick me off the pc in the library now).

Ugh
Just been sick for the first time I a while.
Out if the blue have had a yukky taste in my mouth all day and an on and off mouth full of sea water Envy.
Hope today is just a blip.
Sorry to everyone else who is having a bad day

Troika · 12/06/2018 10:51

Thank you for all the replies and the welcome.

The cyclizine has definitely reduced the amount of vomiting but not the nausea and it only works if I lie down and don’t move much! Not ideal with a two year old at home and two others to get to school.

DP is being way more supportive this time than he was with the 2 year old. I think he realises it’s real now. We’re probably going to put dd2 back with her old childminder for a few weeks as although she’s really good and pretty easy as far as two year olds go, it’s not really fair on her to be stuck in the house with a puking mother day after day. Luckily our childminder is happy to accommodate us on a short term basis.

In my previous pregnancies I have been very lucky as the hg has never lasted past 20 weeks (and stopped at14 weeks with two of them), hoping it’s the same this time.

LucindaE · 12/06/2018 12:02

Troika As this is your third Hyperemesis pregnancy, I do think that they should give you something stronger,so that you can function a bit if possible, given you have a toddler. If they aren't helpful Pregnancy Sickness SOS give excellent advice on 024 7638 2020 (not sure if anyone else has recommended them in my absence, sorry if so). It's well worth asking for more effective meds as these could help a lot more. You are the veteran, after so much experience - but do you find an anti acid helps?
I'm glad OH is rising to the occasion - and it improves for you a lot.
Foodylicious Sorry to hear of the vomit and 'mouth full of sea water'. It is so horrible, because it one spits it out it just comes back, and if one doesn't,you have to swallow it,which is sickening.
I hope everyone is coping.

Foodylicious · 12/06/2018 21:23

Anyone else find the waves of increased nausea coincide with feeling really hormonal?
I've been a bit if a mess the last couple of days. Like when I have pmt but feel really tearful in the evenings too
So exhausted today.
I finish work early tomorrow and am off Thursday and Friday, so pleased about the break from work.
It won't be restful though.
Have new carpet and bed coming for my nearly 4yr old on Thursday so need to clear the room for that then put the bed and room together.
It's his birthday on Sunday so have family coming Saturday.

Anyway, feeling so very blessed right now, but very emotional that my baby is nearly 4 (argh I'm crying again).
And I really would like to feel a bit less sick and tired. I feel like I am letting him down so much.

nailsathome · 13/06/2018 08:35
