I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Foody I do hope you feel better again soon, and managed to get through your day.
Twodrifters I hope the water stays down too!

Foodylicious · 30/05/2018 18:14

twodrifters I can't remember if you have said or not, but have you tried sparkling water?
I can't normally stand the stuff but it goes down well at the moment

LucindaE · 30/05/2018 20:33

Hotchocolate I am sure nobody can fairly see you as a malingerer at work - the way you have forced yourself in, and booked that holiday before at that. Very different from that woman on the thread.
TwoDrifters I've added you. Sorry to hear of violent reactions to water. I hope you don't have peeing as well as runny nose and streaming eyes and puking! Sad
Foolylicious I so agree about fizzy water being more bearable. I assume none have sugar in them? I have no reason to think so, it's just that manufacturers seem to put sugar in everything these days. Ice cubes, too. I never knew that about lemon juice and blood sugar. Sorry to hear that it was no good trying to cut down on meds.

Bitzy I am glad you got away. Lol about 'feeling like crap somewhere else'. Wink
Bored Oh no about the bile rising to your throat. A horrible symptom.
Waves to Nails - you are indeed, near the top - and everyone.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

TwoDrifters and Foodylicious That message about ice cubes looks as if I am saying that I think they have sugar in them - I meant, they are good too! Grin

Hi all,

Hope it’s ok if I join?

I suffered horribly with HG in my first pregnancy which unfortunately ended in January with a MMC discovered at my second scan

I’m now 5 weeks+5 and feeling it starting to kick in again. I’m on the anti emetics but today feeling so horribly nauseous, have the worst feeling in my belly and can’t seem to stop throwing up today. I’d forgotten how bad and horrible this feels and I’m now just terrified it will get as bad as last time - I was so-dehydrated and low.

Any tips for how to make it more bearable this time around?

Boredoftryingusernames · 31/05/2018 17:33

Olivecake hi, and welcome. So sorry you are suffering again, and to hear about your previous loss.

Lucinda will be on at some point with general food and drink advice, and suggest you get some ketostix to check your urine for ketones - a sign of needing fluids at the hospital.

I would advise being really proactive (hard as it is when feeling so shit) about meds. If you are vomting loads through what you are on speak to your Dr about changing them. What medication are you on? If you can't keep anything down it is worth considering going straight to the hospital (either A&E or EPU depending on your area policy) as even if you aren't eligible for fluids injectable anti-sickness medications can help break the cycle (as you may not be absorbing the tablets well). Hope that all helps a bit.....

Olivecake · 31/05/2018 18:22

Thanks @boredoftryingusernames - that’s all super helpful
I have an appointment tomorrow morning with My GP And think I will ask to change my meds - I’m on emesafene now but last time they stopped working so I changed to something else (can’t remember the name now) but the second ones made me so drowsy I could barely see straight - which is also not ideal!

I’m definitely going to see if I can find some of the ketostix tomorrow after my appointment. I’d be really keen to avoid having to be hospitalised again or just being able to brush my teeth and have a shower once in the while which I couldn’t manage last time. The fear of hyperemesis creepinh back mixed with the fear of miscarriage is also not helping with my stomach I’m sure!

Foodylicious · 31/05/2018 18:33

Hi olivecake
Sorry you are poorly and so sorry to hear of your loss earlier this year.
I'm 21 weeks now, but showers were a massive vom trigger for me earlier on.

I did find putting a little 'blue step' stool in there really helped.

Are you taking an antacid? I have found taking ranitidine twice a day on top of meds has really helped.

Boredoftryingusernames · 31/05/2018 19:45

Good luck tomorrow Olive, the second drug was probably an antihistamine if it made you drowsy, I definitely found that too. Not heard of the drug you are currently on, presuming you may not be in the UK.
Tooth brushing was terrible for me too, I found kids toothpaste and mouth wash less minty and easier to use, several people on this thread have found kids strawberry toothpaste helpful.
Agree with Foody about the antacid helping, maybe ask your Dr about that tomorrow too.

Olivecake · 31/05/2018 19:54

Thanks guys - will definitely ask the doctor about an antacid and will pick up some kids toothpaste - that’s a good call as last time the mint taste was just too strong!

And yes you’re right I’m not in the uk right now, am British but living in the Netherlands for now and probably will be my whole pregnancy.

LucindaE · 31/05/2018 20:05

Olivecake Welcome. Sorry for your loss. An mmc is bad enough, but with Hyperemesis... You already have had great advice from Bored and Foodylicious about getting stronger meds and kesostix. I gather form the trusty Wickipedia that emesafene is a similar to cyclizine. I hadn't heard it is sold in the UK, though I am hopelessly out of touch about new meds for Hyperemesis! Are you in the Netherlands? I so agree with the others, you will soon be very dehydrated, and do get the magic sticks to check for the early stages of dehydration. A pregnant woman who has been unable to retain liquids for 24 hours should be treated as a medical emergency.
Some liquids that have helped others: - flat full sugar coke, ice cubes, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, soda water, Elderflower Water, lemonade, Lucozade, fizzy orange, orange juice (if you don't have too much acidity) sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), Dr Pepper, and Robinson's fruit drinks. For food, of a sort, nibbles of crisps and chips, Scotch pancakes, cheap ice cream, cuppa soup, baked potatoes, jelly and nibbles of melon and mango.
Great advice, Bored and Foodylicious Smile

OliveCake I so agree with Bored about kids' toothpaste. That strawberry one,and a kids little toothbrush, makes such a difference.

Hi olive, sorry for your loss and for your sickness this time around. Great advice has already been given and I would add rest when you need to - overdoing things definitely made it worse for me.

I had a ridiculous dry-heave trigger today: the sound of the floor cleaning machine in Asda. I had to move several aisles away from it and compose myself before I could carry on!

Had a scan today and, whilst the twins are fine right now, the blood flow to one has reduced so c-section is planned for just over 2 weeks time!

Boredoftryingusernames · 31/05/2018 21:11

Oh my goodness Nails - just 2 weeks until you meet your babies! How many weeks will you be then? Glad they are doing fine at the moment.
That is a really odd reason for a dry heave! At least it wasn't a full on vomit in the middle of Asda though.....

nailsathome · 31/05/2018 21:21

I'll be 35 weeks and the consultant seems to think they'll be fine so I guess I have to trust what they say Confused

LucindaE · 01/06/2018 12:53

nails Glad they are monitoring carefully - and it will be so nice for you to meet them. Sorry to hear of Asda dry heaving - as others say, a better thing than a dramatic puke, but not nice. I wonder if the fact that noise is vibration has something to do with it - as the last thing one wants when nauseated is vibration. Just one of my weird ideas...
Waves to Bored and everyone.
I am nauseated myself atm, as I have to be on antibiotics for a uti which are having unpleasant side effects. Not to be mentioned in the same breath as Hyperemesis, though. ..

OP posts:
Boredoftryingusernames · 01/06/2018 14:06

Nails I didn't realise you were that far along, hopefully at 35 weeks all will be fine as the consultant says.

Lucinda I'm sure any nausea brings a flash back to hyperemesis, hope you aren't on the antibiotics for too long!

LucindaE · 01/06/2018 16:32

Bored Thank you for asking after me; it's very controllable, and nothing to whinge about. Hope your relapse has passed?

OP posts:
Boredoftryingusernames · 01/06/2018 17:00

Yes feeling a bit better today thanks Lucinda, definitely the right decision to have a few days off work, back in tomorrow morning though. Have even been craving some snacks today after weeks of just forcing main meals down again. Maybe it will be the last relapse?!?! I can cope now with the constant nausea, it's the horrid flare ups that are really miserable!
Glad to hear you aren't feeling too bad.

RockinRobinn · 01/06/2018 22:00

Hi ladies,
Not been on in a while as my symptoms had died down to just nausea and no vomiting.
@Boredoftryingusernames so sorry to hear you are having a relapse 😞 I've found since I've been getting indigestion my nausea has been worse don't know if that's making things worse for you. Hopefully your holiday might perk you up a bit even if it's just to feel a bit rubbish somewhere else.
@Olivecake welcome sorry to hear about your loss earlier in the year. I would second all the other advice others have given I found Dr Pepper/coke and chocolate digestives a saviour for helping me to stop loosing weight. Also had a lot of plain dry toast but to be honest.
Hope everyone else isn't too bad.
On another note has anyone found the whooping cough vaccine has set them back again? Went for my 24 week check yesterday and I had ketones in my urine (so was told to eat/drink more) and they have me the vaccine but have been exhausted since had upset stomach this morning and just had the worst throw up session I've had since I was about 10 weeks pregnant 😕
Any reassurance that this isn't just hg ramping up again? I thought I was finally at a point I would manage the nausea now

Foodylicious · 02/06/2018 08:21

Hi rockin
I havent had the vaccine yet, must book it.

I dont remember it making me worse last time but maybe I just didn't link the two?

Foodylicious · 02/06/2018 08:26

Do You think maybe you could have bug?

Wanttomakemincepies · 02/06/2018 08:59

Morning all. Think might be heading backwards. Just as I was feeling better the nausea and vomiting has started again. The ondansatron has been controlling it, but since Thursday seems to be coming back. Nearly 13 weeks so hoping I was settling down.

Guacamoledip · 02/06/2018 12:23

Can anyone advise regarding acid? I’m 16 weeks and have been on cyclizine since 6 weeks when I went to the gp with ketones. I’m still nauseous 24/7 and sick a couple of times a day but that’s much better than without the cyclizine. But I’ve had acid all the way through and right now it’s burning all the time. I’m not sure if I have acid because I’m going to be sick sometimes or if I’m sick because of the massive acid build up. Rennies don’t really do a lot and leave a vile taste, is there anything the gp can give me or anything I can buy over the counter that others have found works?

Foodylicious · 02/06/2018 13:41

Guacamoledip you can take ranitidine.
Brand name is Zantac, they sell it in most supermarkets and if they have it, an own brand is about 1/3 of the price.
You are fine to take twice a day.

My GP knows and is happy I am taking it along with Promethazine at night and gaviscon during the day if I need it.
