I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@LucindaE Thank you for sharing such useful and valuable information.

When i read 'Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Hi to the new joiners. Sorry you're here but it is a fantastic group and I would not have gotten through the past 20 weeks without the lovely ladies in here!

Hi worried my twins are identical too Smile. This pregnancy has been so much more difficult than my previous ones. I was firmly in the "pregnancy is not an illness" camp before so I guess it serves me right!

TwoDrifters · 26/05/2018 15:55

Hello!

Quick question to you all, I need to go in for a glucose test as apparently my glucose level is a little high. They have said nil by mouth from midnight the night before - not a problem! - and only water on the morning of the test.

My problem is that water makes me totally heave and I’m almost certainly sick as soon as I try to have any. The only way I can manage even a little bit of water, is to have sparkling water with tons of ice and a slice of lemon.

Does anyone know if the lemon slice would affect the glucose tolerance test?!

LG93 · 26/05/2018 17:06

I'm hoping someone can offer me some advice - although I'm not sure if I actually have HG or if this is fairly normal as it's my first pregnancy and I'm only 6w+3

Been feeling nauseous since before I took a test as that's what prompted me to do it, been vomiting since Sunday, getting worse as the weeks gone on. Haven't kept anything down since wednesday night bar one sausage sandwich which I ate yesterday evening. Had a phone appt with gp yesterday afternoon who prescribed cyclizine, and after starting that i managed to keep down a drink and the sandwich, but as of this morning nothing is staying down. Managed a few sips of flat lemonade but all attempts of food and any other drink come back up within an hour or so, despite taking the tablets (which I'm assuming have come back up anyway)

I'm starving, thirsty and really tired. I can barely think straight and I'm starting to get dizzy. Has anyone got any tips on how I can manage this better? What am I doing wrong? I've tried the little and often, biscuit before you get out of bed, acupuncture etc and nothing seems to be helping 😔

LucindaE · 26/05/2018 17:40

LG93 Welcome. It certainly sounds like a bad case of Hyperemesis, and also, as if the cyclizine isn't helping enough. Please do ask for another appointment for more meds, explaining that neither food nor liquids are staying down. Emphasize the liquids - it is a medical emergency is a pregnant woman hasn't kept liquids down for more than 24 hours. It now being the weekend, I think you must speak to out of hours. Can someone get you kesostix from a chemists to check for the early stages of dehydration? They do take those seriously at hospital. If this goes overnight, you might need to go to A and E. An anti acid can make a huge difference, like Ranitidine and Omprazole can help a lot. Are flat, full sugar coke, ice lollies and the juice of tinned fruit any good? The other drinks that have helped are ice cubes, soda water, lemonade, fizzy orange, Lucozade, Elderflower Water, Dr Pepper, Robinson's fruit juice, orange juice (for those without heartburn) and sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya). Foods of a sort: nibbles of crisps and chips, cuppa soup, Scotch pancakes, baked potatoes, cheap ice cream and tinned fruit.

LC93 as below.
Cuddles I am so glad that the mantra gives you some encouragement. There are many veterans of these threads who have never thought it would pass, but it did . Smile
TwoDrifters I wish I could advise you; I wonder if fizzy water might have sugar in it? That is so annoying. I don't know about lemons - they are so sour, but maybe they do have sugar in them? I do hope someone can advise. Did they give you a number for advice? All luck. It is horrible having to take that test.
Nails and Worried Two sets of identicial twins. That is so sweet.

@lucindaE thank you so much for the advice! I seem to have turned a very small corner last night and I'm managing sips through a straw and are a couple of prawn crackers from DH's takeaway so hopefully today will be a bit better but if not will definitely speak to ooh or a and e xx

LucindaE · 27/05/2018 09:29

LG93 Well, that is happy news, anyway. Yes, do get hold of those magic sticks, to check on that dehydration, though hopefully actually having been able to eat something will have helped with those pesky ketones. But certainly, it sounds as if you have Hyperemesis - that level of nausea and vomiting is far from normal pregnancy sickness!

Is anyone else watching with interest the thread about the colleague signed off with HG whilst posting pictures on Facebook of swimming and playing volleyball in Greece?!

I can’t even get out of bed, let alone get on a plane. If only HG was that flexible!

Foodylicious · 27/05/2018 16:24

Was just reading that too!
I am fortunate in that on current tablets I am able to go to work and am rarely sick (not even daily now).
When i was not well enough to go to work, there is no chance I could be holidaying!!!

LucindaE · 27/05/2018 21:26

That is so annoying! There are always compulsive liars, unfortunately, who create cynicism about genuine sufferers...Angry

bitzy12 · 27/05/2018 22:23

It's be read that too. So do so annoying, glad the op has reported her to her boss. I posted saying HG = hospitals not holidays!

I went away for a few days last week, luckily I've had a sickness free couple of weeks or we wouldn't of gone. But I can well and truly say what a bad move it was. I can feel my hg on it's nasty return, all because I've probably over done it while I've been away. Everyone was like 'oh you really deserve a break' (which is true, all us hg sufferers do, ideally a long one lol) but bloody hell, it's done me no favours what so ever. I feel crap for it now x

LucindaE · 28/05/2018 22:08

No real help here twodrifters
Best thing to do is probably ring the clinic and see what they say.

It's such a small amount it shouldn't raise your blood sugar, but lemon juice also slows things down and can be used to lower blood sugar so could give an inaccurate result

nailsathome · 29/05/2018 21:49

Am I really that close to the top?! Crikey!

I agree re: the HG and holiday thread for a couple of reasons. 1) I've been pretty much housebound since 16 weeks with it and I've had it fairly mildly, and 2) I've felt so guilty about being off work but managing to go for the odd 30 min trip to the supermarket that there is no way I'd be able to go on a beach holiday whilst claiming to have hg.

Boredoftryingusernames · 30/05/2018 09:48

Totally agree with everyone's comment on the sick leave/holiday thread. I've just told work I won't be in the next few days as I'm feeling dreadful again this week - and feel guilty about nipping to the shop for milk!

I think I'm in the middle of another relapse, feel just exhausted again, have managed to stop myself actually vomiting by lying down, but everytime I bend down (pretty impossible to avoid with a toddler) I get vomit in the back of my throat - so grim. 26 weeks yesterday, so not sure if that's common timing for things to get worse again?

Hope everyone else is doing reasonably ok - hopefully the fact some of the more recent posters have gone quiet means they are doing a bit better?!

Hotchocolate86 · 30/05/2018 10:13

Sorry to hear you are feeling bad again bored. I hope a few days rest helps you. I have had the vomit in the back of the throat thing. It’s awful.
I missed twodrifters query. I did a google search just now but couldn’t find much.
I am feeling a little better these last couple of days. I’m doing reduced hours this week so hopefully I can manage them.
I read the HG and holiday thread with interest but it worried me a bit. I have a holiday booked in a few weeks in this country and I have been worried about whether I’ll manage it but figure I’ll be able to take it easy and make it a very restful holiday if needs be. It hadnt occurred to me that it might be an issue with work as I have it booked as annual leave anyway but if I have to have time off in the run up I’ll have to make sure I discuss it with them. No way could I contemplate a plane trip or playing volleyball. A very slow walk is about my limit at the moment and on a bad day I am still pretty much attached to my sofa.

bitzy12 · 30/05/2018 10:27

@Hotchocolate86 I've just got back from a few days away. I'll be honest, I did too much but I don't know what else i could of done having 3 dcs with us. It was always going to be an active holiday (which we booked ages ago, before I fell pg) and it did wear me out so my advice is please rest as much as you can while you are there. Saying that, it was lovely to get away. Just different scenery etc. Hg makes you always seem to be at home doesn't it? I did enjoy being away and feeling crap somewhere else lol.

@Boredoftryingusernames I'm 26 weeks tomorrow and starting to feel like you also. I feel like I'm at the start of hg again. You know its there and slowly attacking me and getting worse. Not been sick yet but can't move for nausea and keep getting that mouth watery thing and tummy pain....good times :-( Really hope you start to feel better soon.

Regarding the fake hg lady on holiday in Greece, don't know if anyone's seen but the story has been picked up and printed on a few news websites in Australia lol. I've read a couple and for us, I think it's a good thing as they've printed lots of Mumsnet comments about how bad hg actually is.

I was sat thinking I hope it doesn't go viral as no doubt it will make hg look like nothing. Can't be that bad if you can fly over to Greece can it? But they've written the articles as they should, HG is the worst and this lady has just taken the p*ss

nailsathome · 30/05/2018 10:27

Hotchoc I think your holiday is fine. Just don't post fb photos of you hiking up any mountains or skydiving!

Boredoftryingusernames · 30/05/2018 10:46

Bitzy hope you start to feel better soon too! Not that it ever fully goes away, but gives me hope it will, and then extra miserable when it rears it's head again. Glad you managed to go away for a few days for a change of scene.

Hotchocolate hope the reduced work hours are helping. Don't feel bad about getting away for a break, just no beach volleyball! It's totally different if booked off as leave in advance to the story on here anyway.

Here's hoping everyone picks up again soon !

Foodylicious · 30/05/2018 11:41

Ugh.
Stupidly decided to reduce my Promethazine last night.
Feeling awful today.
Felt weak, wobbly and really tired today.
Have eaten and drunk loads in the aim to feel better, but it's not helped and I'm just sat at my desk feeling sick.
Bugger.

TwoDrifters · 30/05/2018 15:24

Thanks all for thoughts on the lemon issue! I think I will just forego it to be safe, and hope I can keep some plain water down. For some reason, my body treats plain water as if it’s poison and acts fast to eject all trace - not just vomiting but eyes watering, nose streaming, all at the same time. It’s ridiculous!

My due date is December 5th, btw, Lucinda I feel a bit safer saying it now I’ve had my 12-week scan! x

Hotchocolate86 · 30/05/2018 15:47

Thank you for all the reassurance on my holiday. It’s still a little while so I’m really hoping I’ll be back at work properly by then anyway.
bitzy I’m really glad you enjoyed your break. It is tedious feeling like you are staring at the same four walls all the time so I must say I’m looking forward to the change of scenery if nothing else.
Sorry to hear you are feeling rough foody. It’s always such a risk reducing the sickness meds.
twodrifters I do hope you manage to keep some water down.
