Hello,
I'm due in a few weeks and 95% sure it's a boy, however on the off chance that it's a girl had better think of a few names...
I think my DH and I could agree on Emily but a bit worried that it's too popular.
I was thinking of spelling it the French way ie Emilie but wondered if that would get on the child's nerves as she grew up.
Does anyone have a view on whether Emilia/Amelie would also cause endless explanations as to how the name is spelt?
Thanks a lot

I love those alternative spellings

dinny · 07/05/2007 22:00

LOVE Emilia, and would use Emmy for short, personally

Good luck!

My name is Rachael with an 'ael'. All the way through school, and still now, I have to put up with my name being mis-spelled. It does get annoying, so I personally would go with Emily or Amelie, as they are both different enough to avoid confusion.

1dilemma · 07/05/2007 22:03

Emily very popular but not as much as Sophie.Emelia should be spelt OK by most, Amelie also going up in the popularity charts and would need lots of spelling attention I should think!!hth

dinny · 07/05/2007 22:03

my name always gets mispelled - never bothers me, just correct the mis-speller in ques.

saggers · 07/05/2007 22:04

DD2 is called Amélie (French spelling) and although I love the name and the spelling, her name is frequently misspelt and mispronounced.

lissielou · 07/05/2007 22:04

i love Emilie and Emilia, lovely names!

Hulababy · 07/05/2007 22:06

I like Amelie

Piffle · 07/05/2007 22:06

I have an Emilia
Everyone thinks I mean Amelia
But we call her Emmy and no one gets that wrong

ChippyMinton · 07/05/2007 22:07

If i heard 'emilia' i would might think it was spelt Amelia. Actually i quite like that, in an old-fashioned way

Aero · 07/05/2007 22:08

Rather Emelia which is a different name really than Emilie which is just Emily spelt differently and your dd (if you don't have a ds) will spend her life correcting folk.

Personally, I like both, but I think Emelia would be my choice if I wanted to avoid a very popular name. Amelie is nice too, but if you both like and agree on Emily, then just spell it the normal way - your dd will thank you for the small mercy of not having to continually correct incorrect spelling of her name.

Aloha · 07/05/2007 22:10

If you go with Emily spell it Emily unless you actually are French. Poor girl will spend her life correcting other people if you don't.
Emilia and Amelie are different names altogether. Both are pretty, but I personally think Amelie is so obviously from the film that it will become rather dated.

Piffle · 07/05/2007 22:13

plus I found that Amelie/Amelia gets shortened to Amy which I didn't like (awful childhood bullying incident no offense to the actual name)
Hence Emmy.

dinny · 07/05/2007 22:13

Chippy - Amelia and Emilia are pronounced slightly differently.

Aloha, my French-ending of name ALWAYS gets mispelled!

agree about Amelie - v popular at the mo but too kind of twee

puffling · 07/05/2007 22:20

Like Piffle our DD is called Emilia. People always think she's Amelia so we're always explaining. Emilia is an English name and is a character in Othello. I don't think many Italians have the name despite it being the name of an Italian region.

We named for Emmeline (Dp stomped feet and said no, well to that and Christabel )
The decided after Iagos wife in othello, that we both liked Emilia.
Aled Jones dd is called Emilia, the British actor Emilia Fox, swedish pop star Emilia

Emiliana is also quite nice, but in the Uk probably you'd be thought a little affected

puffling · 07/05/2007 22:30

Patsy Palmer's daughter is called Emilia too.

puffling · 07/05/2007 22:31

Also, I believe Emilia is the number 1 name for girls in Finland.
