Hello,
I'm due in a few weeks and 95% sure it's a boy, however on the off chance that it's a girl had better think of a few names...
I think my DH and I could agree on Emily but a bit worried that it's too popular.
I was thinking of spelling it the French way ie Emilie but wondered if that would get on the child's nerves as she grew up.
Does anyone have a view on whether Emilia/Amelie would also cause endless explanations as to how the name is spelt?
Thanks a lot

My grandmother was Amelie.

But she was also born and raised in Paris.

You could always go for Amalia.

I think FWIW that if you give your child a popular name and then spell it differently they will be spelling it all their lives.

"Oh yes it's Tom - but did I mention the silent h and the z at the end?"

Emily is popular but that has advantages - everyone can say it, no-one winces with astonishment, everyone can spell it (oops)

Maybe Amelie is different enough not to be mistaken for Emily IYSWIM.

Not sure that Emilia is an English name - after all Othello is the moor of venice Piff lol at DP not approving Christabel either!

Absolutely LOVE Amelie but can't use any girls names beginning with "A" as it wouldn't work well with dh's surname .

What Aloha said.

My sis is called Emilie (French spelling) and she loves it, because she says that it is easy for people to read out loud, yet unusual enough to be a little different from the norm. There is also a fab range of French books(translated into English) based round a character called Emilie Jolie which are really cute and which she still treasures (aged 27)!

I like Amelie.

What about Celia?

saggers · 08/05/2007 09:21

Nancy's nice too.

Thanks for all the views- it will really me help to form a balanced picture in case it is a girl!
Nbg- funnily enough I do really like the name Celia and I'm kind of surprised it hasn't made a come back in a similar way to other slightly old fashioned pretty names eg Evie, Florence, Rose etc.
Maybe a possible middle name...
