Electric shock in early pregnancy

Hi. I'm about 4.5 weeks pregnant and today I got an electric shock from a hand blender. It was reasonably mild - no burns or anything - I just felt like my hand had been stung or bitten suddenly. Does anyone have any experience of this? I am quite upset.

My mum was electrocuted when heavily pregnant with me, but her flip flops stopped her being grounded and she was fine. So am I.

@ClareB83 thank you. I was wearing socks unfortunately and slightly damp ones at that! However I am trying to think logically and my little bean is too small right now to even have a heartbeat so hopefully getting a shock this early isn't too much of a risk... I just have no idea!

Are you sure it was electric or was it just a static shock ?

Pretty sure it was electric @LemonySnicket and it was totally my fault as my hands were a bit damp from cutting washed vegetables. I should have dried them before using the blender.

I had an electric shock off a faulty unearthed light switch at about 12 weeks. It was fine. General advice is that baby is well protected inside you and if you have no ill effects then baby won't either.

Probably already at ease but this happened to me when I was about 10 weeks and I literally felt it go right through me from a light switch! Went to the hospital and they told me unless I was burned or knocked off my feet baby would be fine and we're still growing well :)

@ChilliCheeseMama I have actually still been worrying about it so hearing this was really reassuring! Thank you so much, and I'm so glad that you and your baby are well. It turns out that someone I live with got an electric shock from the damn thing the day before. Bit frustrated she didn't warn me or chuck it away, but she doesn't know I'm pregnant so there we go! It's been binned now to avoid further mishaps...

I had an electric shock at 12 weeks and sadly miscarried. It was an electric fence running at 12000 volts and I fell onto it so got a significant shock. I felt the charge through my own heart and had significant pain after in my joints and limbs. I think if you have just had a mild shock that hasn't travelled through all your body your baby should be ok.

I called my midwife team and arrange for an early scan to check for a heartbeat. They were great and saw me that morning.

I got an electric shock from a faulty plug at 6 weeks pregnant. It knocked me back but didn't burn my skin. I had heart palpitations for ages afterwards and my fingers felt a bit numb for 20 minutes. Initially I was worried but looked online to see that no real harm is done from a mild shock.

I'm now 34 weeks and all is fine!

@ForeverHopeful21 That must have been scary and I'm so glad that you and your baby are now okay. The shock I had was much stronger than a static shock but definitely nowhere near as strong as the one you experienced. Good luck with the birth! :) xx

I had 3 electric shocks whilst I was pregnant. From a faulty dishwasher. I had a scan at hospital after the first one just to be on the safe side but as it was mild the Dr basically knew the baby would be fine but scanned me to make me feel better. With the other 2 shocks I didn't bother with a scan but kept a close note of movements

I’m not sure if any of you can help me with what happened but I’m 4.5 weeks pregnant and I stupidly went to change a light fitting and got an electric shock. I’m panicking now. This post was from a while ago so hoping to know what the outcome was...thanks in advance

@Panickingmum2be this happened to me a couple of days ago - I had a small but painful shock from an extension cable. Being overly cautious I rang my midwife who said it was absolutely nothing to worry about - hope that helps put your mind at ease!

@Panickingmum2be I'm 27 weeks so further along than you, but the midwife sounded so relaxed about it that I really wouldn't worry. And I think that at 4.5 weeks your little one is so tiny and protected in there that it wouldn't have any impact. But do ring your midwife if you're feeling anxious about it, there's no harm in a quick phone call to put your mind at ease.

@JemNo66 thank you, yeah I called the nurse at the fertility clinic and she said it was ok but she said she hasn’t come across it much, I think that’s why I starting googling! 🙈 but yes that has put my mind as ease, thank you so much! and yeah your right still very early I think that’s why I panicked cause I have no symptoms yet x

@Panickingmum2be Almost exact situation as you, although mine was with a faulty dishwasher today. I’m 4.5 weeks as well. It was a quick shock, not painful but noticeable. Googling has terrified me. My OB is closed for the holiday, although at this early I’m not sure she could do anything anyway since there is not much to check. I was hoping for a happy ending update from @BadBadBeans as well. In any case, you aren’t alone in your worry today!

Hello @JRose22 and @Panickingmum2be and @JemNo66. I'm the OP, although I've namechanged since then. Sorry you guys have had a similar scare. Please rest assured that the electric shock definitely did not end my pregnancy. I did miscarry unfortunately, but several weeks later, and the foetus was much bigger than 4.5 weeks so it was definitely not fussed by the electric shock it got back then. I promise! (I got pregnant again 6 weeks after my miscarriage and now have a very delicious 20 month old boy.) I hope that sets your minds at rest - the baby is really very protected in there, especially so early on. Wishing you an uneventful rest of your pregnancy x

This happened to me at 36 weeks on my last pregnancy. I felt the shock travel through my bump waters. I called the midwife and was told to just keep an eye on movement. Dd was fine.

@JRose22 thank you so much, your right that was my biggest worry cause there is nothing to check yet. I’m glad I’m not alone in this. I felt it go through my arms and I was shaking for a while. Hopefully we both be fine 🤞wish you a happy and healthy 9 months!x

Thanks everyone for sharing. I’m 6 weeks and stepped on a live wire yesterday. It was from an old lamp and so the voltage was low, but I felt it go through my whole body. The burn I had was only a tiny scratch which nobody else could even see two hours later. I had a MMC a few months ago so I’m pretty worried. But also trying to just stay cheery and calm and wait until the doctors’ reopens and I get a referral for a scan.

Hi @KellyAnnewithanE I was panicking so much when I had the shock last week but so far everything seems to be fine. I have my first scan this Thursday. Il keep you all updated but unless u have bleeding/cramps I’m sure everything is totally fine. I hope this helps x
