I've just had a fall :(

I've just slipped on the snow and fallen badly on to my back. I'm in agony with my lower back now.
I'm 7 weeks pregnant and I'm in bits worrying that it will cause me to miscarry. Has this ever happened to anyone else and their baby has turned out fine?

Can I arrange to have an emergency scan or is that not possible?

Try not to worry (easier said than done I know)
You've probably hurt yourself more than the baby. He is cushioned under amniotic fluid, your uterus, muscles, pelvic bones, etc.

However if you are worried, you could try calling your local EPU? Are you under a midwife yet?

Unfortunately it's hit or miss at this stage. Then won't get you in a for scan. You could go get one done privately but to be honest, this little bean is so safe in there especially so early on that a fall is very unlikely to change the outcome.

I'm not under a midwife yet. I didn't want to be until I have my early scan done at the end of this week. I tried calling my EPU and they said there isn't much they can do. All I want to know is that my baby is ok Sad

Your baby will be absolutely fine, they’re tiny and it wouldn’t have even slightly affected them... but owch! Not so much you! Try resting.
With my youngest i went to a theme park and trampoline park and all sorts before I knew I was pregnant and he’s perfectly healthy now. With this one I was on holiday around 7-9 weeks and fell several times climbing some rocky terrain... all is fine!

The baby will still be well protected by your pelvis and they're really a lot sturdier than we think so try not to worry too much.

I slipped on our laminate flooring when I was about 14 weeks pregnant and landed on my side bruising my ribs and hip. My daughter is now a healthy almost 5 year old :)

You'll be absolutely fine! At seven weeks it's still SO small it wouldn't have even registered I wouldn't have thought.

If the EPU won't see you, could you afford a private scan?

Your baby is well protected so try not to worry.. easier said than done I know.

Please don't worry. I fell down the stairs with my daughter onto my back. She is fine.
My son I fell onto all fours chasing daughter running towards a busy road and all fine.
My falls were in later stages of pregnancy. In the earlier stages there is so much more protection from bumps and knocks. The baby is also obviously within the amniotic fluid too, so well cushioned.

Try not to worry, at this stage you’d have to completely smash your pelvis for the baby to be affected by a fall. It’s very very small and well protected by your pelvis. I’m sure it won’t have affected your baby at all.

I would try not to worry, with my last pregnancy I slipped on my extra slippy new stair carpet as I was only wearing socks from the top step right to the bottom at about 30 weeks. I hurt my back and was in pain for a few days, plus had a brilliant bruise but baby was fine now 7 weeks old.

Just rest for a few days, and you’ve got your scan the end of the week anyway.

Sara for goodness sake! A 7 week embryo (?) is so deeply hidden inside the pelvis that a fall won't hurt it!

Er, how could a fall on your back at 7 weeks, when baby is still totally within pelvis, hurt them at all?!

A fall directly onto your front at 30 weeks might conceivably do some damage, although even then they are usually fine. A fall on your back at 7 weeks has a nigh on impossible chance of doing anything to the baby. Baby will be fine.

Honestly there is pretty much zero chance this can affect your pregnancy. The foetus is tiny and well protected. Miscarriages are usually caused by chromosomal issues. Try not to worry.

Oh my heavens, you poor, poor thing! Your baby will be fine!! Honestly, at 7 weeks, with all of that cushioning, everything will be ok. My friend fell down the stairs at 6 months pregnant and landed on her bump! Her DD is now 7. Smile

Falls happen! You need some good stories to put your mind at ease. I fell on the bus towards the end of my pregnancy, right onto my backside. That little guy is nearly 4 now and I swear he's been paying me back for it since birth! Grin

You will be very sore... much more sore than usual. The hormone changes in early and mid pregnancy will make you much more prone to aches, pains, sprains, and strained muscles. It's safe to take paracetamol. Steer clear of ibuprofen (it thins the blood and can cause abnormal bleeding).

Get some good traction boots! I remember the fear of falling on ice in pregnancy very well. That fear never leaves. Your scan will reassure you. Try and get in with the Early Pregnancy Unit for a scan in the next week or two... not because something is wrong but just to settle your fears. You can't put a price on reassurance. Thank you everyone! I've been worried sick about this pregnancy, so this fall has made me even more worried about it. I've not even been to the doctors to get the pregnancy confirmed yet. I just want the scan to hurry up and then it will feel real.

I had a whole crate of tins of baked beans fall on my bump when I was pregnant with DS2, I was terrified and in pain (lots of bruising) but we were both ok, try to rest and fingers crossed your baby is ok, they're very well protected in there.

I fell on black ice when I was 30 weeks pregnant . I was absolutely petrified and very shaken up and at that stage in pregnancy I went to maternity unit where they checked me over....Dr even said to have some red wine with meal that evening Shock , this was 24 yrs !
dd is very healthy ....
Try not to worry, as others have said foetus is very well protected

Bless you, the chances are things will be fine. The baby is still very small and will be protected in there. I had a fall in my last pregnancy at 24 weeks, I went flying on a mopped floor and landed hard on my side. Went to get checked over and the midwife said " I can tell you that the fall won't have harmed the baby but we will check for reassurance." Everything was ok.
At 7 weeks without seeing a scan it's impossible to say that all is going as it should, and if anything did go wrong it probably wouldn't be anything to do with the fall. I would pay for a private scan if that option is possible if you're going to worry, which is understandable that you would.

No need to worry at all. I have fallen down the stairs on my arse TWICE during this pregnancy - at 8 weeks and again at 18 weeks. I was not too worried by the 8 weeks fall but mentioned the 18 weeks fall to a MW and she said until later on when you are very big, you can assume that all is fine as long as you do not start bleeding soon after and that I was right not to worry.

You're probably going to be in more pain than you would be normally because of how your body is right now - the pain in my coccyx has crippled me but lots of scans have shown that my baby is perfectly fine. AND I've got a very low lying placenta and have been told to be careful and it was still fine!

Just rest up OP and try to relax. I know you've had a fright and are in pain, try a nice warm bath.

Unless you start bleeding ( which I highly doubt will happen ) then there's little point asking for a scan imo.

OP you will be absolutely fine. People generally don't miscarry because of falls - life is not like Eastenders.

(not a midwife but that's what mine told me)

I stacking books onto some shelves (attached directly to the wall) in our flat when about 9 weeks and the weight of the books literally ripped one of the shelves off the wall and all the books and the shelf hit me in the chest and stomach as I tried to step back away from it. I was black and blue and terrified that it would have the the baby but she was and is totally fine. The EPU were great when I called for reassurance and got me in for a scan anyway but said that baby probably wouldn't have even noticed! Easier said that done but try not to worry xx

Husband accidentally shut the garage door on my head which caused my legs to go under me and fell awkwardly . We laugh about it now! Anyway I went to A&E, I had a scan in the cubicle with a portable ultrasound and spent a day on the maternity ward being monitored. Everything turned out fine. All the docs and midwives said I'd done the right thing coming in. Sure all will be ok.
