Early Gender Scan Wrong?

Lauraelisabeth9 · 14/01/2018 00:13

Hi all,
No judging please I already feel bad enough myself.
I had an early gender scan today, we were so desperate for a girl, mainly me and after a bit of trouble we were told it was a boy. This pregnancy has been so so different to my boy though. I was wondering what are the chances of it being wrong. Obviously I’ll wait until my 20 week to confirm better but just wanting some advice. The pictures weren’t overly clear either. Thanks.

I cried when I found out I was having a 2nd boy. Big deal lol. I loved him just as much as his older brother when he arrived, and to be fair he's probably the closest of my 4 to me.

Theres nothing wrong with having a preference for goodness sake.

WalkingEverywhere · 15/01/2018 09:46

I don't think there is anything wrong at all with having a preference. I wanted a girl but I also knew for certain that I would love whoever turned up.

I haven't ever done 'pink and sparkly' crap with my girls at least no more than I did with my boys. 🦄🦄🦄

NimbleKnitter · 15/01/2018 09:51

I've just found out we're having a boy, and I'll admit to being a bit disappointed.

Not because of fears about a daughter in law (I get on way better with my mother in law than with my mother) or because of a pink/sparkly obsession (I find gendered clothes offensive - I'd already told my family that any pink would be handed to the charity shop).

It's because I understand girls. I know girls. I know nothing about boys. I get on with them, sure. But I've never claimed to understand them

cherryontopp · 15/01/2018 10:36

Ive never understood threads like these.

"We're desperate for a girl" "could they be wrong"

Or its people saying theyre trying for a particular gender.

You have 50/50 chance of either, so why do people conceieve knowing theres half of the chance of getting the gender they don't want and then be sad about it? Hmmbaffles the mind it does.

Anyways, wait for til your next scan, it will be clearer no doubt. If u they see a willy, its definitely a boy Grin

LittleRen · 15/01/2018 10:38

I had two early scans with my first two - both said boy, both were correct. It's likely to be correct and more likely to be incorrect if they said girl as that can be confused sometimes - boy genitals are normally developed by then. Only doubt is if it was the cord, but they likely would have said if there was doubt (they did with our second so we confirmed at 20 weeks). Found out this time at 20 weeks, a third boy and I can't wait.. honestly having two the same is amazing, they are best friends. Of course no scan is 100%, but don't get your hopes up thinking it may be wrong.

I actually can't imagine having a girl now and wonder how I would get on with another girl in the house, so it works both ways. But I think once you have the baby it changes, and truly does't matter was gender it is.

LittleRen · 15/01/2018 10:38

Also if you post a pic people can give a better opinion.

NimbleKnitter · 15/01/2018 11:12

Is it baffling?! If you want a girl, you only have a 50% of getting one. So the only way is to roll the dice, doing so with the full knowledge that you are equally likely to get a boy.

What's the alternative? Not try? No-one is so set on a girl they'd rather not have any children at all.

But if you do want a girl, finding out you're having a boy is obviously going to be a little disappointing. You'll get over it, of course. But that doesn't mean the initial disappointment isn't real

Heregoeseverything · 15/01/2018 12:40

@cherryontopp I know what you mean to some extent - eg when people say they are "shocked" when the sex isn't what they want I do find that baffling, because there is a 50-50 chance and you can't just wish your way to what you want. I also think it's silly if people have children on the assumption that they will be of a particular sex - ie, if you don't want a child of either sex, you should not have one in the hope that it is the "right" sex.

But I imagine most people with a preference are in the same position as me - which is that I really want children, with a preference for one of those children being a girl. I would much prefer two boys to one boy, or to no children, and would adore any boys I was lucky enough to have sent my way, but my ideal would be to have one girl among my children. I don't think I'm entitled to that, it's just my ideal, if I'm being honest.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 15/01/2018 12:46

I think it’s unlikely to be wrong but not certainly. Keep an open mind till your next scan erring on the side that it’s probably a boy. I know someone that has had 6 gender scans at 16 weeks and they’ve all been accurate.

pennyw85 · 15/01/2018 13:02

Completely understand your situation. I have a DD and would love another girl. 6 weeks to go until we find out - and we are finding out for that exact reason, so we can 'get used' to it being a boy before it's born. Otherwise I'd be worried I would be slightly disappointed when it's born. 20 more weeks is plenty of time to get excited about having a boy :)

LisaSimpsonsbff · 15/01/2018 16:38

Keep an open mind till your next scan erring on the side that it’s probably a boy.

Why would anyone advise that? If OP gets used to the idea that it's a boy and then it turns out to be a girl she'll be pleasantly surprised. If she continues to think it might be a girl and it's not she's just dragging out and prolonging the disappointment. If she accepts it now she'll surely be over it by the time the next scan comes (I can't imagine experiencing gender disappointment - I just want a baby, and I don't care whether some people in the thread think I must be lying - but surely it lasts a day or two, not weeks?).

Clinging onto hope that the scan's wrong is bonkers - and she'd never have considered it if the scan had told her what she'd wanted to hear.

Why would anyone advise that?

Because the OP wants a girl why do you think?!

FrostyThirties0 · 15/01/2018 18:14

Poor little boys. I hope you never tell them your first thought of them was disappointment.

Heregoeseverything · 15/01/2018 18:24

@GreatDuckCookery I'm with @LisaSimpsonsbff and your response makes no sense to me. Continuing to believe that there is a good chance of a girl when there's no evidence for this belief is not going to be helpful to the OP in the (very likely) event that it's a boy. Keeping the belief alive will not make her any more likely to have a girl, but will drag out coming to terms with it if it is indeed a boy.

PinkAvocado · 15/01/2018 18:26

Frosty-lay off. Sex disappointment recognised mental health issue in pregnancy.

user1499786242 · 15/01/2018 18:37

Do you have a potty shot? Basically the shot of between the legs? Most scan places make sure you have a clear print of that
At 16/17 weeks it's pretty clear it's a boy or a girl TBH!
Were there two people in the room?
The place I went have two people who have to both agree on the gender before they will say, they explain exactly what they are looking for and like I said print off a picture!
They also have to be completely certain otherwise they book a re scan
It's clear from my scan photos what I'm having!

There are plenty of facebook pages that have experts on telling the sex of the baby by either nub or potty shot so you could try uploading?

Also, symptoms don't mean anything I'm afraid
I was convinced I was having the same as my first as pregnancy was the same but it's the opposite
I have many friends who have had wildly different pregnancies but had the same sex

Two boys will be incredible! Xx

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 15/01/2018 19:17

Heregoeseverything what on earth are you talking about?

SmallBlondeMama · 15/01/2018 19:21

We were told "possibly boy" during our 18 week ultrasound .. sitting here snuggling my 7 month old daughter as I write this :) Mistakes happen!

SmallBlondeMama · 15/01/2018 19:24

One other thing to add .. I had almost identical pregnancies with my boys.. super easy & straightforward. When I was was pregnant with my daughter I felt and looked like hell!! It sucked! Completely different experience. So you never know!! ;)

LemonMuffin837 · 15/01/2018 19:35

I am currently 30 weeks pregnant with a boy, I wanted a girl. The reason I wanted a girl is because I notice (not all the time but quite often) that boys get a girlfriend and bugger off, you barely see them again.
Plus I don't like football or boys things, but you can't guarantee your boy will like that stuff anyway, he may be in to dance or drama. Who knows! It's like bingo.
But now I've had time to adjust, I couldn't be happier I'm having a boy, all the stories I've heard lately from my friends about their girls, plus having a 8 year old step daughter. I'm bloody glad I'm not having a girl, they're so bitchy!!

LBethh · 15/01/2018 19:37

Frosty You really need to get over yourself I’m done tolerating your comments. They are actually quite laughable.

maybebaby88 · 15/01/2018 19:50

Oh frosty clearly you are having some difficulty understanding what people are saying. For your own sake maybe just lay off any threads talking about gender in future huh? Your not adding anything constructive, you're just desperate to be noticed for your unwanted and unneeded opinion

LittleRen · 15/01/2018 19:51

SmallBlondeMama in your case they said possibly boy, so there was doubt... so really it wasn’t a mistake. The OP doesnt mention that there was any doubt. There was doubt due to
the cord in my case so they offered a re scan, then a third re scan which we declined and waited for 20 weeks.
