Apologies if this has been asked a billion times before (I did do a search!) are you still drinking (or reducing) Diet Coke

I know the caffeine is a concern,

Bah! Pressed enter!

... I know caffeine is a concern, but as I read it doesn’t need totally cutting out?

What are your thoughts? I’ve given up booze, soft cheese, caffeinated coffee, smoked salmon and pate, it’s all I have left!! 😹

I have decaf Diet Coke sometimes. They're the gold ones.

ClareB83 · 11/01/2018 17:06

If you're desperate for something have it. You're pregnant not an angel!

lifechangesforeverinjuly · 11/01/2018 17:06

Another vote for the decaf one too.. I actually prefer it to Diet Coke!

Carbohol78 · 11/01/2018 17:06

@ClareB83 ... I’m gonna sound really selfish, but it’s just not the same! 😹

@life ... I suppose I should give it another go 🙈😹

You're allowed smoked salmon too

lookingforthecorkscrew · 11/01/2018 17:12

I’m about to treat myself to a full sugar red Coke! My sickness is bad today (I’m 18 weeks, WTF?!) and I have been craving one all day!

mintich · 11/01/2018 17:14

I drank coke during my pregnancy. It was one of the only things that didn't upset my stomach. I had such bad sickness that I needed the sugar I think!

mustbemad17 · 11/01/2018 17:15

In my first pregnancy i ended up swapping from diet to full fat (after years of detesting fat coke). Think I was drinking enough for ten people tbh but it was literally the only thing i could drink without bringing it back up. MW did the whole 'caffeine intake' talk but it was preferable to vomming!!!

And i agree the decaf stuff tastes like utter crap 🤢🤢

sausagerollsrock · 11/01/2018 17:16

I’ve carried on drinking it. I love Diet Coke! I have tried to limit consumption though as I can usually be quite greedy with it. Imo I’m giving up loads of other stuff which I’m fine with but my Diet Coke- no!

KMoKMo · 11/01/2018 17:23

I have had one can a day and one cup of normal tea. Check the nhs website as the recommendation is there. A limited amount is fine.
I Could not have got through the day without it!!

nousername123 · 11/01/2018 17:24

Before pregnancy all I drank was come zero. I don't drink hot drinks or water.
I decided pretty early on that this needed to change but rather than stopping it altogether (caffeine withdrawal isn't fun) I bought in bottles of water and will make a point of having at least 1 a day. I also sometimes drink hot chocolate. I know it's not the best for you but it's very difficult to give up completely and going cold turkey on something is probably going to do more harm than cutting down a bit x

ParkheadParadise · 11/01/2018 17:26

I drank diet coke when pregnant with dd2, although I didn't find out I was pregnant till I was nearly 5mths. I also had lots of things I shouldn't have had before I found out 😕😕

Lazypuppy · 11/01/2018 17:26

Coke has far less caffeine in than coffee

Oysterbabe · 11/01/2018 17:28

I had it all the time 🤷

SomehowSomewhere1 · 11/01/2018 17:28

I could be wrong, but I thought you could have several cans a day and still be within the caffeine limit. I’vd craved it on and off throughout.

Buxbaum · 11/01/2018 17:30

You can eat smoked salmon, and you can very happily have 200mg of caffeine a day. So a daily mug of filter coffee (120mg) and can of Diet Coke (42mg) would keep you comfortably under the guideline.

user7654321 · 11/01/2018 17:51

I would drink Diet Coke - I love it! I would cut the coffee (or switch to decaf) instead if you’re worried about caffeine. There’s much more caffeine in coffee than Diet Coke!!

Carbohol78 · 11/01/2018 18:05

@bluechameleon, sorry, to explain, I work in food development, part of my role is tasting products direct from international suppliers, who may not go though the same procedures as ourselves, so listeria is potentially a higher risk, so for my risk assessment I put no smoked salmon (was easier!) Smile

@looking ... cheers!

Thanks guys, have already switched coffee to decaf (I barely notice the difference!). It’s the Diet Coke I cant bare to lose Grin believe me, we aren’t talking just one can a day BlushGrin

Caffeine free Diet Coke was about the only thing I could drink when pregnant without throwing up

BrutusMcDogface · 11/01/2018 18:14

I've allowed myself a can about every two-three days, when I really crave it. As mentioned above, it only has around 40mg of caffeine and you're allowed 200 a day. I've cut down on my tea intake but still usually have two cups a day.

Drink some if that's what you fancy!

BrutusMcDogface · 11/01/2018 18:15

I never used to drink much fruit juice (sugary) but I've found myself craving and drinking loads, particularly apple juice. It alleviates the sick feeling, and sometimes hits the Diet Coke craving spot!!

DotCottonDotCom · 11/01/2018 18:16

Isn’t aspartame a thing with Diet Coke? This is exactly why I avoided it
