I've got my 16 week appt later today, any ladies who recently had their 16 week check know if you get to hear it or not? Thanks!

They wouldn't let us hear heartbeat until past 20 weeks incase they hear something wrong before your anomoly scan.

mustbemad17 · 04/01/2018 11:26

Mine wouldn't even try, she said it's not generally done here as sometimes they can't always find it & mums panic

laelti · 04/01/2018 11:27

I didn't.
It seems to depend a bit. I was told they don't listen for it at 16 weeks by the midwife, though I have seen other posts on here where people have asked and they have tried/have heard it!

Rainshowers · 04/01/2018 11:32

They didn't check it at mine either. I was a bit upset because they had when I was pregnant with DD1 but I didn't realise they'd stopped doing it since then so was hoping for some reassurance. I did start feeling movement around that time though which helped.

I didn't get to hear the heartbeat until 24 weeks IIRC.

RosaBaby2 · 04/01/2018 11:33

I did, student midwife did it, took a little while to find. I heard they don't do it everywhere now

OneForTheRoadThen · 04/01/2018 11:33

Mine did. I wasn't expecting her to as I'd heard they didn't check the heartbeat as routine at 16 weeks but midwife asked me if I wanted her to have a go and I said yes. She did warn me that she might not be able to find it though.

BigBaboonBum · 04/01/2018 11:34

Mine tried and failed, multiple times. I was called back two weeks later but I booked a private scan instead because I was so worried after they couldn’t find it.... and he was perfectly fine! Smile . So if they check just remember it’s apparently very common not to find it this early

sausagerollsrock · 04/01/2018 11:34

Yes I did at mine in December. I was absolutely terrified she wouldn't find it (which is common at 16 weeks) and I would worry more. I nearly asked her not to try but in the end I just let her do what she normally does and it was there Smile

KrankedUp · 04/01/2018 11:35

They did with my first but not with my second in 2016 saying that policy had changed and they weren't checking heart beat any more at 16w.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 04/01/2018 11:36

No, most health trusts now have a policy of not checking it at 16 weeks because it causes worry with no benefit.

chocolateorangeowls · 04/01/2018 11:38

My midwife never listen to the heartbeat at any appointment. I only ever heard it when I went in to check for reduced movements and when I was monitored during giving birth.

usernamegoeshere · 04/01/2018 11:42

I did but only because I asked and was warned they might not find it! They did but it took a while

ClaireBear1986 · 04/01/2018 11:47

I didn't but have heard about a lot of people who did get to listen to it.
Hoping I will get to hear it at my 25w app, so fingers crossed.

It seems all NHS areas do things so differently now.

thepatchworkcat · 04/01/2018 11:50

I did, yesterday!

cornishmumtobe · 04/01/2018 11:55

Yep i heard mine at 16 week appointment and every midwife appointment since then - it's lovely!

Mummyloves09 · 04/01/2018 11:57

I had my 16-18 week app this morning and she used the doppler, baby's heartbeat was heard immediately luckily.

pastabest · 04/01/2018 11:57

Yep just had mine today and had a little listen. Had DD 11 months with me though climbing all over me do it was only for a little bit.

GMtoBe · 04/01/2018 11:58

Yes my midwife was able to find a heartbeat at 16 weeks. She let me listen at every appointment, I was lucky!

MegEmski · 04/01/2018 12:31

Yes I did, it was lovely. She warned me though we might not hear it

HandbagFan · 04/01/2018 12:40

I did, but with the caveat that if we tried and couldn’t find it I’d have to go to the hospital for an emergency scan so it was up to me. We found it straight away.

Clevs · 04/01/2018 15:07

My midwife checked the heartbeat at my 16 week check, and again at the 25 and 28 week check. I believe she will do for subsequent appointments when I have them too.

EastDulwichWife · 04/01/2018 15:31

We did. She offered and warned that it might take 5 minutes to find it. She found it right away, but I was prepared for it not to be heard.

PointeShoesAndTutus · 04/01/2018 15:37

I did, but after a bit of a charade where my lovely midwife said under new policy she's not allowed to offer it unless I ask. There was a big pause (pregnancy brain!) and then she raised her eyebrows and I got the hint and asked! I think she had to record in my notes that it was a patient request.

I got told the risks that I wouldn't hear it, and that if I did, it was only a snapshot so didn't mean that in, say, a week's time the baby would still be fine.

The midwife said they'd had a spate of women presenting very late after reduced movement or bleeding, saying that they hadn't come to hospital straight away as they'd heard the heartbeat a few days ago, so everything must be fine.

It was amazing to hear and very reassuring so I'd suggest asking.

pregz · 04/01/2018 15:43

I was in hospital over the period I was due my 16 week check so didn't have an official appointment but a midwife did come to me and checked the heartbeat , it took a minute to find and she did warn me that sometimes they simply can't find it so not to panic

You should ask if not offered but try not to stress yourself out or be upset if she says no or can't find it! Smile
