I've got my 16 week appt later today, any ladies who recently had their 16 week check know if you get to hear it or not? Thanks!

My 16 week appointment isn't until week 19 due to scheduling difficulties at the midwife's end, though I am 16 weeks now. I bought a £30 Doppler from TESCO and listen to its heartbeat on that. Have always found it pretty quickly and it's saved me money on private ultrasounds for reassurance. Saying that, caveats are that if you can't find it you may worry yourself unnecessarily and that it can't be used to check fetal health, nor should it be used instead of contacting your midwife if you think there may be a problem. I figure that with application of common sense it isn't a bad thing.

Mine did, I didn’t even have to ask.

Must be a regional thing as I have never heard either of mines heart beat, my first born nearly two years ago didn't hear the entire pregnancy just at the end when in labour and then this time (currently 29 weeks) haven't heard at all and don't expect to! I didn't even know that was offered!

I've just had my fourth and didn't get to hear the heartbeat at the 16 week check, but I did with all my others, including my third child whos 22 months. It must have all changed since then. I booked a private scan as I hadn't yet felt any movement and I couldn't wait until the 20 week scan to know everything was ok. It was money well spent just for that reassurance.

Hi ladies I’ve got mine in 2 weeks hoping I get to hear the heartbeat! What else can I expect at my 16 week appointment?

Newbiebaby1 · 04/01/2018 19:09

I did. I had read that they don’t always do this now but she did and just sent we can’t always hear so don’t be alarmed if you don’t and I’ll get you back in next week but we heard a lovely heartbeat

I have only had the heart beat done at the hospital and once at midwife when was 34 weeks

Mine was Tuesday, she asked if I wanted to try! So I was like hell yeah! She said to not worry if she can't find one, it's pot luck really. Found a healthy heartbeat straight away, I guess it just depends on the midwife.

Thanks everyone! I got to hear it! It took her a while to find it but when she did it sounded like a steam train! She thinks it sounded like a girl, and I think it's a boy!

I had to ask but my midwife was lovely. She did warn me that she may not be able to find it and that I shouldn't worry if she didn't because it is rare to find it at that stage. Lucky for me my baby was right at the front and she found it instantly

Bit gutted that I seem to be the only one who didn't get to hear it.

Will make sure I definitely ask at my next app, in case my NHS has this new policy that PP mentioned.
