I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

justtheonethen I meant to say, it must be alarming, the thought of coming off the steroids. But it is hard to believe that you would go back to being as ill as before. The women on here who have taken them don't seem to have that happen.

justtheonethen · 09/01/2018 18:12

I really hope so *lucinda!

Life* think it depends on the quality of their machines.

seizethecuttlefish · 09/01/2018 22:39

Life it really depends on your bladder and the machines. When they came to get me for my scan, the words uttered were "are you bursting? Really bursting" I used to drink 3l of water a day, to be bursting I'd have had to down a keg of water. I just said yes and it was fine. I think they say a pint an hour before. Hope it is ok. It's horrible with hg. Especially if it's at a time that can be worse for you.

Shehz21 · 10/01/2018 00:02

Hey Nat & justtheonethen
Yes FINALLY getting a tad bit better. But the horrible cold, nasty chest infection and even nastier cough made me feel like death along with a hg relapse. I was literally crying everyday and felt almost as bad as the first trimester. Constant coughing was making me violently sick and I got dehydrated many times and had to be admitted to the maternity unit with +++ ketones 4 times in 10 days. Was really a horrible horrible week but so grateful I am finally coming to the other side.

justtheonethen yes lack of sleep is so exhausting. My MIL and Dh's friends joked about how it is a practise for baby to come but I am the last one who wants to practise lack of sleep, i rather enjoy my last 10 weeks of sleep ffs!

Lucinda Hello Mother HenSmile
Yes FINALLY starting to get better. But a cold when being pregnant is really bad especially with the limited medication we can take while pg.

seize definitely a better day today thanks!
And so glad you also had a good day. I still remember how much you were suffering from your 1st post on here and you have finally turned a corner! Plus you are halfway there!
Hope you enjoying baby Seize(baby Cuttlefish?lol) kicks Flowers

Shehz21 · 10/01/2018 00:04

LifeofPies I remember my hospital had that full bladder policy mentioned in bold letters too but I had already vomited 2-3 times before my scan despite my meds so .. they had a pretty hard time with my baby but only because she was in a very awkward position.
Just drink as much as you can without getting yourself sick, they should be able to do it nonetheless.

Natsku · 10/01/2018 07:21

Yeah we have snow on the ground, very packed down and smooth on our driveway so is good for a version of ice hockey using ice hockey puck and sticks.

Natsku · 10/01/2018 07:23

If the machines are old then they might need a fuller bladder but modern ultrasound machines don't (I had a completely empty bladder at my 12 week scan as I thought it was going to be a transvaginal one)

Lifeofpies · 10/01/2018 08:07

Thank you all very much, I really appreciate your thoughts, experiences and reassurance. Will do my best. Thinking back to my last scan at 8w, that was abdominal with an empty bladder, so hoping it won’t matter much.

Shehz what a terrible time, I’m so pleased you’re on the mend. You must be feeling pretty wiped though.

Natsku ice hockey on the drive sounds very exotic to me, imagine it’s not quite that exciting living it day to day!

Natsku · 10/01/2018 08:39

Yeah it's not so exciting when living it every day. One good thing about being heavily pregnant now is that I have the perfect excuse not to do the snow work so OH has to do it every time it snows (last year I did it most of the time because I wasn't working so made sense for me to do it but I couldn't figure out how to use the snow blower so had to do it with the shovel and that is hard work!). OH plays backyard hockey with DD most days after work, they love it! Once baby is born I'm going to take DD to the outside ice rink nearby so she can play properly on skates.

Kitcat159 · 10/01/2018 09:25

I know this question has prob been asked many times before but...
How do I know if I have HG or normal morning sickness?

I have constant nausea
I can't keep liquid or food down (particularly in the morning and in the night)
Vomiting bile (and phlegm) daily
Burning throat
Dizzy and faint
Super tired
Massive headaches
Really cracked lips
Low bp (75/52 is my lowest this week)
Not been able to work for a week
No ketones and not been to hospital.
Sickness tablets from doctor have stopped working.

Is that HG or morning sickness?

Kitcat159 · 10/01/2018 09:26

12 weeks
Been sick from 7 weeks getting worse at 11 weeks
First pregnancy

Natsku · 10/01/2018 09:39

It's on a spectrum really, some doctors will only diagnose HG if you've lost a certain amount of weight and have been hospitalised or something like that but any pregnancy sickness that is so bad it interferes with your daily life is bad enough that you need help so in that sense it doesn't matter if it would be officially diagnosed as HG or not. Yours definitely sounds bad, it's stopping you from working and you are clearly suffering, so just keep at your doctor to try different meds or med combinations until you find something that works, and keep off work until you are feeling more stable.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 10/01/2018 10:48

You sound similar to me Kitkat and my GP has said yes, definitely HG. Which medication were you on?

Had a scary conversation with a very old fashioned GP this morning who tried to tell me that the metoclopramide was unsafe (it’s the only thing making me vaguely able to cope with life!) and that I should just be signed off work indefinitely and try stematil. Thankfully he called the obstetric team for a second opinion and they completely disagreed! I’m so bored at home! I’m actually quite looking forward to getting back to work tomorrow!!

LucindaE · 10/01/2018 12:01

KitKat That sounds exactly like Hyperemesis, whether you have lost the required amount of weight to fit into an official diagnosis yet or not.
With that sort of sickness, it would only be a matter of time, anyway. It is impossible for you to cary on normally with that level of sickness. Did you say you were on meds? You need to be if you are not. There are several safe ones to try. You also need kesostix to check for the earlier stages of dehydration, though if you have scanty urine, dry skin, a headache and blurry vision, those are all signs.
Don't despair; most people get an improvement between 14 and 21 weeks, and things are at their worst usually about 10-11 weeks.
Some drinks that might help: flat full sugar coke, the juice of tinned fruit, ice cubes, soda water, lemonade, fizzy orange, orange juice, Lucoazade, Dr Pepper, Elderflower Water, and sips of chocloate milkshake, maybe soya. For foods - of a sort - cuppa soup, nibbles of chips and crisps, cheap ice cream, slices of melon and mango and jelly. Some swear by custard.
Didn't I suppose he was thinking of the dangers of the mother developing twitchiness (not the baby) which does happen to a minority and is a sign they need to come off it? A couple of women on here have had that. One didn't realise it was serious, and stayed on it for weeks after that. Fortunately, all was well with her. That was Kalidasha. I wonder how is these days?
Waves to Natsku and everyone...

I typed a big long message out yesterday congratulating Spearo on getting home and being such an awesome person for going through such a traumatic start. Massive hugs for the Spearo family. I have no idea why it didn't post though, probably baby brain lol.

So mini just sleeps all the time I have to wake him to feed where he may grace us with an hour of his beautiful face and eyes if I'm lucky then it's off back to the land of nod. Honestly mini 1 was lucky if he slept for 12hrs in total a day for the first year of his life. Crazy how different they are.
I'm worried he is going to end up with a flat head lol.

Hope everyone is having batter days, unlikely I know xx

Lifeofpies · 11/01/2018 08:19

mustang mini sounds like a dream! DS was a colicky non-sleeper (but prem so to be expected really) and I am keeping things crossed for a chilled baby! It always amazes me how they each come out already as such an individual. Hope you’re loving all the snuggles.

Well, I’ve just been invited to a job interview next Tuesday, what rotten timing! It’s been a long recruitment process already and I really want the post, but no idea how I’m going to manage it. I had a good cry last night looking at the prep and contemplating giving a presentation, coming up with competency examples etc. Crap Sad. Any tips anyone?! I know the pressure is on already with job hunting while pregnant, but I need to unfortunately.

Hope everyone’s doing ok today.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 11/01/2018 09:33

Back at work today. Don’t know if i’m Having a bad day (on my third big vomit already) because of being at work or because it’s getting worse generally as I get closer to 7 weeks (6+5 today!)... either way it doesn’t look like I’ll be back at work for long at this rate.

Natsku · 11/01/2018 10:57

Sorry Lifeofpies I've got no tips for you, job interviews stress the hell out of me at the best of times so imagine it must be so much worse when suffering from HG. Wishing you all the luck though!

Mini Mustang sounds like the perfect baby! Fingers crossed my one sleeps so well but I doubt it, I read that the more active they are in the womb, the grumpier they tend to be when out of it!

Don't force yourself to stay Didntcomehere you're better off at home if you're vomiting so much already

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 11/01/2018 11:36

Natsku I’m making every effort because I know how short staffed we are and how stretched my colleagues feel. But TBH the manager in charge of sickness was so unsympathetic and unhelpful that i’m Very much of the ‘fuck it’ attitude now. If I’m off for a month, I’m off.

Lifeofpies · 11/01/2018 11:36

Thanks, Natsku - good wishes are very welcome!

LucindaE · 11/01/2018 13:12

Didn'tComeHere Poor you! It is so ironical that I believe you said you work for the health service, who because of chronic underfunding are too stretched to take care of the health of their own staff. Don't force yourself in. You sound too ill as the hormones step up...
Mustang I am so glad you have a dream baby.
LifeofPies Oh dear, sympathies - though it is so many years, I cannot forget my horror at having a sleepless, colicky cranky baby like yours. Once she was awake for eighteen hours out of twenty-four and I was in tears myself. I hope your next is an angel.

Just catching up with the thread.

Huge congratulations to Spearo how lovely that your baby is now home after everything you have been through.

Mustang your baby sound adorable.

Natsku I hope the sleeping thing turns out to be a myth. I also have a very active baby. Apparently not everyone can feel there baby move at 20 weeks and I have been able to feel mine for ages because he is always bouncing about (we found out at the scan that he's a boy).

Didn'tcomehere I hope you don't go to work tomorrow because you really don't sound well enough to be in and that level of sickness must be so difficult to manage in a health care situation.

Natsku · 12/01/2018 06:48

I hope it's a myth too Elephant!

My belly is aching today, on one side, think I hurt a muscle or something bending down :(

Lifeofpies · 12/01/2018 08:12

Lucinda it’s so tough isn’t it! If this baby is similar, at least I know that it doesn’t last forever, which I felt it would with dear DS.

Natsku · 12/01/2018 11:31

Knowing it doesn't last forever will make it easier I'm sure. Though then again with DD I kept going by fooling myself that it would be over by the time she was x months old because I thought all babies learnt to sleep through the night by one year old at the latest.
