Scan at 7+2, only measuring 5/6 weeks

Just went for a private scan today (after a MMC in May where they discovered an empty sac at 12 weeks). There was a 2mm fetal pole but no heartbeat, and the lady who did the scan said it looked more 5-6 weeks. I hate the question “are you sure about your dates?”. Not looking hopeful, but now I will have to go to the EPU on Monday. Anyone else experienced similar?

Currrently going through similar- should be 6+3 but foetus and hormones indicating around 5 weeks. I’m currently waiting for second lot of blood tests through and praying hcg levels have doubled. I had an EP and MMC before DS so incredibly nervous.

Eastend2015 · 09/12/2017 18:55

I hope things turn out well for both of us!!

user1485778793 · 09/12/2017 18:57

Yes. Exactly the same. Went for an early scan when by my dates I was 6 weeks..... They said I wasn't 6 weeks be a use there wasn't a fetal pole, they made me go back a week later and there was a 2mm fetal pole and heart beat Smile

JediStoleMyBike · 09/12/2017 19:04

I've had the same just recently. Should have been 8+5 but measured 6+2 which Was a rather large discrepancy to me. Had the next scan yesterday after a 10 day weight and baby has caught up. Seems to be fine.

It's so hard. My first MMC measured behind so I know the fear. My DD also measured behind too.

Bubble77bee · 09/12/2017 19:27

Thank you for your replies. I had pretty much resigned myself today to the fact that it was not going to work out for me, but maybe all is not lost. Looks like it is going to be a long week - got to go to the EPU on Monday then it is likely that they will want to scan me again in a week before getting the final verdict. A couple of weeks ago I asked my GP if I could get an early scan on the NHS due to anxiety from my previous MMC, but he said no, unless I had pain or bleeding. Am a bit annoyed that I had to pay for an early scan.

PS Fingers crossed for you Eastend.

I had a similar thing. Had a terrible terrible bleed (almost at blood transfusion stage) and so much pain with one of my dc, went to hospital and they scanned me the next morning. By my dates I was 8 weeks but they couldn’t see anything scanning over my tummy but internally there was a little tiny 6 week baby and the lady scanning me (mind blank what they are called!!) could see a heart beat and said all looked good. Came back two weeks later and baby was measuring 8 weeks and still doing well. At my scan at 13 weeks I was still measuring two weeks behind. He was six days early (planned c section) and almost 9lbs! I’m still convinced they got the dates wrong lol. He’s now almost six and jumping about on his bed right now whilst meant to be sleeping!

I hope you get some answers on Monday, I know the waiting can be horrible. I hope that maybe brought you a little comfort about what happened with me.

Eastend2015 · 09/12/2017 19:38

Given my history the nice lady I spoke to on the phone at EPU said just to come in and say I had pain even though I hadn’t. When I got there they said because i’d had an EP the would scan routinely at 6 weeks anyway. My symptoms don’t seem particularly strong this time round and seem to be getting less intense so i’m not holding out much hope but the stories on here are making me feel more positive. Ahh well, I know what i’m on for and the uncertainty will be over soon Confused

Eastend2015 · 09/12/2017 19:41

Ps in terms of process, they scanned and took blood thurs, then more blood today (48 hrs later) to compare hcg levels. They’ll call tomorrow to let me know the follow up plan.

Bubble77bee · 09/12/2017 19:44

When the GP told me that I almost felt like making up pain or bleeding, but then I felt bad that I might be taking up time from someone actually experiencing that. I never anticipated what an anxious time early pregnancy would be. Thanks for sharing all your stories - it really helps.

When I had an early private scan I thought I was 8-9 weeks and she put me back a over a week! Currently 30wks pregnant!

Bubble77bee · 10/12/2017 11:28

How are you today Eastend? Any news on your blood test results? Have everything crossed for you.

Eastend2015 · 10/12/2017 15:19

Thanks- not good news for me unfortunately. Hormone levels have only increased from 918 to 1020 in 48 hours so looks like the pregnancy is failing. I have to go in for yet another scan tomorrow before the hospital will discuss options as apparently they can’t rule out an ectopic given my history. I’m absolutely gutted of course but even more annoyed with all the back and forth with the hospital. I hope you have better news!

So sorry to read that update Eastend Flowers

Rainbowbright17 · 10/12/2017 19:23

@Bubble77bee can I ask where you live please? I'm in Glasgow & I asked our GP for an early scan due to anxiety after 2 previous miscarriages & I was told exactly the same as you. I've heard of lots of ladies on here getting early scans due to having previous miscarriages so I'm just wondering if different areas allow different things?

I'm currently waiting on blood results to see if my hcg results have doubled as they hadn't last week. I haven't had a scan yet but I should be working on dates 8+5. Hope you get positive & reassuring feedback soon x

Rainbowbright17 · 10/12/2017 19:27

@Eastend2015 I'm so sorry to hear this. I have a feeling I may be facing the same thing. I hope there is a glimmer of light at the hospital this week for you. Sending warm hugs & sticky baby dust x

Eastend2015 · 10/12/2017 19:41

Thanks all, have started bleeding which is a relief in some ways. At least my body is not totally out of sync! No pain or cramping though. Hopefully this’ll pass quickly and naturally. I hope you guys have better news!

Bubble77bee · 10/12/2017 21:42

Eastend, I'm so sorry to hear that you didn't get good news. I hope that the bleeding passes quickly, and that you continue to be as pain free as possible.

Rainbowbright - sorry to hear that you are in the same situation. I live in Bristol. I also see so many people on here going for early scans, and was also wondering if the system is different in different areas. I also wondered if I contacted the EPU directly, they might be more willing to do early scans, but the GP just won't refer me for one. When I had my MMC last time the midwives at the EPU were all so lovely, I can't imagine them turning someone away who was really worried. It seems to make sense to scan someone early if they have a history of MMC, as to me last time I just had weeks of wasted time where nothing was developing.

Well, as expected this morning no conclusive news. It has grown a mm or two since my scan on Saturday but still no heartbeat (at 7 +4). So I’ve got to wait a week for a rescan to find out for definite, but the nurse agreed with me that it looks likely to be a non-viable pregnancy. I am going to expect the worst I think. Feel rather pessimistic doing this but I have booked in for the surgical management next Tuesday, so if it is bad news, at least I have a plan. If it’s good news next Monday then I can just cancel that. What a lovely run up to Christmas!
Eastend - how are you doing today?
Rainbow bright- I asked at the EPU about early scans for people who had previous MMC. The lady who did my scan wasn’t sure, but thought you could probably get them if you’d had 2 previous MMC.

Eastend2015 · 11/12/2017 11:30

Oh no bubble, so sorry it’s not better news. Have they checked your hcg levels?

I continued to bleed over night then passed a number of clots this morning. I hope everything has passed now- the bleeding is very light and I feel lots better and didn’t have any pain. I’m just glad my body has dealt with this quickly and I can focus on the future. I really hope you have better news!

Bubble77bee · 11/12/2017 12:13

Glad to hear you haven’t been in pain Eastend. I asked about whether they could do a blood test, but they said it wouldn’t help at this stage.

Eastend2015 · 11/12/2017 12:26

Oh hon I’m so sorry, I’m hoping for a miracle for you. The TTC after miscarriage thread in conception seems v supportive when you are ready or feel free to message me. Sending you the biggest of hugs xox

AKP79 · 11/12/2017 13:34

Really sorry to hear all this ladies, it's such a horrible thing to go through.

On the scan front, you still have to have 3 in a row for them to do early scans. I have had two MMC in a row and have high anxiety, but unless there is pain, bleeding or a history of 3 miscarriages in a row they wont scan early.

Rainbowbright17 · 11/12/2017 15:09

Eastend2015 I'm so sorry. I'm pleased to hear you haven't had any pain but wish it was a happier ending for you. I hope you are able to have some comfort with your other half. x

Rainbowbright17 · 11/12/2017 15:14

Bubble77bee thank you so much asking, even my GP feels anyone with 2 previous mmc should have an early scan, it's very odd that they don't want to give reassurance as worry/stress isn't good in pregnancy. I'm sorry you didn't get better news with your scan, I have everything crossed that next week will be more positive for you. x
