CVS test

Hi, I'm not sure the content of this post is light hearted enough for the newbies corner, however I wanted to post something about the CVS test as noticed the only threads about it were quite old and may not attract responses.

I had a CVS test this morning after being given a 1 in 5 chance of downs following the nuchal test at the 12 week scan - I wanted to share the fact it really didn't hurt and wasn't even as uncomfortable as i feared but the waiting is obviously agony, has anyone else had a similar experience with the sort of odds I had and had a favourable result? I had CVS testing with my second child, and as you say it was a painless procedure but a very difficult waiting time. I was told to rest in bed for 36-48 hours afterwards, but I think it was because the dr knew I had quite a rushing about type job and wanted to slow me down. I can't quite remember my odds, but I was quite old, so they were always going to be skewed as age is one of the multipliers/determinants. In my case, as well as Downs there was a concern about another chromosonal issue (Edwards or Patau syndrome, I think).

All was well and my DD is now 14. I hope it goes well for you too,

Thanks for your reply - Ive never met anyone else who had to have the procedure but then I was in my twenties with my first 'batch'. Thanks for letting me know my suspicions about the newbie corner not being the right place weren't ill founded! Any idea how i ask to have it moved sorry? X

I had a CVS 6 years ago due to DD having a nuchal measurement of 3.6mm. All was fine, I remember the wait being awful though. She’s now a very healthy, typical 5 year old.

I had the exact same measurement MissRainbowBrite! Thank you for the reassurance, although my odds of ds increased from 1:183 based on the nf measurement and my age to 1:5 following the blood tests, which apparently show some hallmarks of downs. I'm not feeling very hopeful tbh 😓

Btw would be very grateful if anyone can tell me how to request to have the thread relocated to a more appropriate section - I'd like to be able to offer advice and support as well as receive it as it's such a lonely time even with the support of family and friends as you need people who understand the situation don't you x

If you report your thread to MN they should move it for you.
I had mine done at Birmingham Women’s and they were excellent. Very reassuring and the procedure was done very quickly. I took it easy for a few days but other than feeling a little sore was fine.
I got initial results back within a week then the full set back in 10 days. I can’t remember my risk factor but I was 33 when I had DD. Fingers crossed that all works out for you, remember that 3.6 is only 0.1mm above the cut off for referral. That is such a tiny amount.

Thank you again MissRainbowBrite - you're right about the fluid level being just above the maximum, which I must admit initially gave me a lot of hope, but the blood tests dramatically increased my odds and I have had a distinct feeling of it being a bad outcome both on instincts and what professionals have said. I have 3 kids already, aged between 17 and 3 and had never even considered this before x

Sorry you've got this worry! I had a CVS recently - we were 1 in 10 for Down Syndrome and I think 1 in 100 for either Edward Syndrome or Patau Syndome. Our measurement was 3.8mm and we had full array checked

The results were quicker for me that they said, our CVS was on a Weds and got initial results for the three most known trisomies on the following Monday and I think the rest a couple of days later on the Weds or Thurs

Our's were clear luckily (but the CVS was definitely painful! I don't think the anaesthetic worked!)

Have they said anything about additional scans after CVS? We've had one and our anomaly scan is a bit earlier than usual, next week

Hi Marmite - sorry you've been through the same nightmare as me - I was fully expecting pain as anytime doctors say uncomfortable it means bloody painful! I was pleasantly surprised how painless it was for me though maybe having so little hope I felt in a strangely very calm state, perhaps that helped. They have said I'll have the results for 3 big ones by Friday but that if they're negative it'll be another 7-10 days for lesser known chromosomal abnormalities and if they're clear too then I'd just have anomaly scan a couple of weeks early at 18w. I can't imagine how relieved you feel and thanks for the support whilst I continue in this purgatory! Xx

P.s. Marmite - I've got a feeling they haven't mentioned any other scan yet as it's more likely my large nuchal fold measurement is down to a chromosomal problem, particularly as the consultant said she could see something that could potentially indicate a problem, which was far from reassuring as even if it comes back negative for ds (my odds for Edwards and Patau were much better at 1 in 594), I'm going to assume there's something else wrong until otherwise informed! X

It wasn't as uncomfy as I thought but had psyched myself up for it to be really bad

My scan and measurements and neck fluid are were all completely normal but with my age and one of my bloods my chances are 1:30

I was devastated earlier, never been so emotional. Feeling bit more positive but a very very scary wait ahead

Hi Lotsalotsagiggles - strange to think we both endured this on the same day! Although the blood test can totally change things as it did with me, (though I was above the 3.5mm nf measurement so was classed high risk anyway especially as I'm 38), it's still quite positive that you are 1 in 30 even after the bloods as my risk increased from 1 in 183 to 1 in 5 after they got the blood test results back so I'm feeling very pessimistic indeed. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you xx

When do you get your results? Worked out my percentage is only 3.33 likely but still terrified

I will know by Friday, what about you? Statistically my chance is only 20% but the blood tests showed some hallmarks of a downs diagnosis as apparently in a 'normal' pregnancy both hormones they look for (hcg and pappa) should be around 1.0 but in a downs pregnancy, classically the hcg will be higher than 1.0 and the pappa more like half, around 0.5, which mine were 😓

My Papp was 0.244 but the other marker was ok

All scan and measurements were fine

A positive diagnosis for Down’s Syndrome is not the end of the world, just the start of a slightly different, but equally wonderful journey. Good luck, whatever happens

I had a 1/130 4 years ago for my youngest, I had just turned 35, high bloods and slightly high neck measurement (high on the normal chart) I opted for a cvs, we waited for nearly three weeks. Felt like forever in our eyes, all was good and he was fine. He's nearly 4 and the cutest. Good luck with your results!

I keep thinking there are 29 chances it'll be clearand just one that it's Not

it's just the not knowing and worrying, as wasn't at all expecting it

Results are back and negative against abnormalities etc so all normal, so so so so happy

That's amazing news L - I knew you'd be ok but didn't want to sound like I was trivializing your worries - the fact you hadn't had an abnormal fluid measurement, even though on its own it's often not a determinant, was the thing that made me feel sure you'd get good news. All the very best x

Thanks for your input Curliegirlie and wafflelady. I don't think I will be able to proceed if it's positive for downs CG, mainly because it's impossible to know the severity of the learning problems and other likely issues such as with the heart, but also this would be my 4th child and my youngest hasn't long turned 3 so it would have been a lot to take on anyway, but with a child with special needs I don't feel (atm) that itd be fair on anyone. It's very good of you to send me the info though as obviously the more I have the better i can make a decision if needs be. Not sure how I can face going to bed a third night not knowing x

I haven’t been there but I really hope you get the result you are hoping for tomorrow.

My bloods were high too, which they didn't know why.
My dh and I both said from the start we wouldn't continue with the pregnancy if he results were positive for downs, Edwards etc.
