I found out yesterday i am pg with my 2nd and am only about 5 weeks so i know its still early.
We told mil and sil yesterday but i dont know how to tell my dad.
When i was pg with ds i was terrified to tell him and i dont know why, now i dont know what to say to him this time.
It will come as a surprise for eveyone as no-one knew we were ttc.
How did you tell people, especially immediate family??

I think all our family presumed we weren't bothering, so was big surprise for them all. Without any explanation we gave my MIL the 1st scan photo (12 weeks) and it was brilliant to watch her face, as the penny dropped and her look changed from confusion to recognition to sheer delight! I think that's been one the high points of this pregnancy to date.

RedFraggle · 10/04/2007 09:26

First time around dh called his mum (who lives about 200 miles away) and chatted about this and that and then said "Oh and by the way, you are going to have a grandchild" this was at about 6 or 7 weeks as he couldn't hold it in any longer. I think she screamed with joy (and nearly deafened dh).

Then I called my Mum and just said "I've got some great news - I'm pregnant!" She was delighted!

Second time around was a bit sh*t as I was admitted to hospital with a suspected ectopic and we had to tell my parents as we needed them to get dd from nursery. As it happened it wasn't an ectopic so we were all massively relieved (especially me as the young Dr who I saw initially had me on the list for surgery that night!)I'll never forget my Mum's face though when I came home a few days later and told her everything was fine... We didn't tell MIL any of this though as she is so far away, we waited until about 8-9 weeks and then just said I was pregnant.

Oops this is long...

MrsBadger · 10/04/2007 09:33

We phoned everyone after the 12wk scan. Most conversations started 'We're having a baby!', except for one...

'Mum, are you busy the weekend after August Bank Holiday?'
[Mum fumbles for diary]
'No, we'll have got back from Italy the Wednesday before and we don't go to Greece till the 15th.'
'Fancy coming up to meet your grandchild?'

My work colleagues were thoroughly fed up with pregnancy and babies (3 in the last 6 months) so I baked them a cake to soften the blow.

PinkTulips · 10/04/2007 09:50

with dd:

texted my best friend straight after the scan to confirm i was pregnant (non exixtant hcg levals) had texted her earlier to say 'i might have some news for you later' she knew we were ttc so was expecting the text asking 'do you still want to be a godmother?'

dp just rang his parents and blurted it out

i got my mom drunk and told her, then we ganged up on my dad and brought him out for a nice meal and told him over the starters

with ds:

texted best friend when i found out

dp just blurted it out on the phone

rang my parents at 20 weeks after the scan and told them (got preg rather soon after dd, lol)

Hersetta · 10/04/2007 10:02

I told my Mum when I saw her just after Christmas (she lives in Spain). I gave her a happy Christmas Grandma card and inside I wrote.

To Nanny,

see you in 34 weeks

lots of love

Baby xx

took a couple of seconds for it to sink in, then she burst into tears!

FoghornLeghorn · 10/04/2007 10:04

Awall of these sound lovely - we just blurted it out with both pregnancies, although had to tell parents, DB & SIL over the phone with DD2 as they were on hols.

I really want to wait until ater 12 weeks next time (next time ?) and just show people the scan pic - that would be great

FrannyandZooey · 10/04/2007 10:08

I don't often see my family so I ended up telling them in the lobby of the Tate Modern

I just said "I've got something to tell you - I'm pregnant." My mum said "But how do you know?"

I managed to avoid saying "Well I had unprotected sex 3 months ago, my periods have stopped, 2 doctors have examined me and said yes I am pregnant and I am having a scan next week you dozy mare I am not a TOTAL IDIOT whatever you may think"

Katy44 · 10/04/2007 10:10

We also did the blurting out thing, although we're lucky enough to live close enough to parents to do it in person.
My mu offered me a drink and I said "No I'd better not, I'm pregnant". She then ran round the kitchen screaming (happy screaming) leaving the rest of us a bit stunned just watching her. She then asked if it was good news (i.e. was it planned or a pleasant surprise) as we were both just sitting in silence!

Katy44 · 10/04/2007 10:10

F&Z - did you have the birds and the bees talk with her?

chocolateface · 10/04/2007 10:14

I let it slip to my three year old. He wouldn't put 0n his shoes to go out, and I begged
" Please put your shoes on, Mummy's got a baby in her tummy and it's making me feel really poorly & tired".
We then went to DH's office, DS1 wakded in and said in a very loud voice
"Daddy, Mummys got a baby in her tummy!"

We live abroad, so we called my parents up (the first time) and asked them if they wanted to come over to visit us. They hummed and hawed over coming over in July or August, so I said, well why don't you come over in November and see your first grandchild? They were just delighted. MIL was a bit blasee, but it's her 6th grandchild, so maybe that had something to do with it.. For the second, Mum twigged because even at 6 weeks, she thought I was showing. They're really excited.

FrannyandZooey · 10/04/2007 10:27

Katy I think I just pointed at my (previously non-existent but now C cup) breasts

MrsMar · 10/04/2007 11:17

I told my sister first, just held up my pregnancy test sticks. She yelled with delight at first, and then it was "ewwww put those things away, you've peed on them!!!"

Told my mum and dad and PIL straight out.

We went away with friends recently and everyone was getting out pictures of their nieces/nephews, so we got out our scan picture. Again, like Jamantha's experience, a moment of confusion followed by dawning realisation and kisses and hugs all round!

We had great fun telling people, I hope you have just as much fun!

Uki · 10/04/2007 11:38

Congrat's Fifi

Hersetta- I love the card you wrote, how beautiful, made me nearly cry

I had all my family and dh's over for christmas and hung the tests on the tree, with pretty ribbon. (all three of them) dh thought it was a bit yucky, but i thought it would be funny.

Before lunch I asked if they'd seen my tree decorations, and they said "yes the tree looks lovely" I then said "can you see anything unusual?"

Step MIL to be noticed but didn't know what they were, she said she "liked the candlesticks I made" LOL.
my mum thought they were tests but didn't know what for, don't think she'd ever seem a pg test. after a while I couldn't help but say "They are HIV tests what do you think, they are"

They eventually understood and were delighted.

i tried to wait until 12 weeks but some people started noticing at 8 so that ruined that idea!

day i found out i told best friend i had some important news but she would have to wait til i saw her the next day. when i saw her she tried guessing lots of things then guessed the right one. her response was sh*t, noooooo are you joking?

SlightlyMadSlug · 10/04/2007 11:49

DTDs (before we knew it was DTDs) - I was about 12wks at X0Mas so we wrapped up a knitting pattern with some wool for the grandparents to be.

DD3. We told everyone the folling 'joke' by text/MSN

Us: WHat do you call a baby born in April?
Them: I dunno
Us: I don't know we havn't decided yet.

MIL was on web-cam and watching the penny drop was fabulous.

Quootiepie · 10/04/2007 11:51

I didn't, GP told my mum, my mum rung my college and then told everyone else after I was married (so, when I was 6 months pregnant) and then DH told his lot the day before DS was due. So, the only person I told was DH which was just holding a test infront of him!

evilnamechanger2 · 10/04/2007 11:53

evil, i don't suppose you have any tests you could send my way

evilnamechanger2 · 10/04/2007 11:53

wow quootie how did you keep it hidden from dh's lot for that long!

evilnamechanger2 · 10/04/2007 11:55

wooops 1st post - wrong thread

Quootiepie · 10/04/2007 12:05

Erm, the fact we never saw them helped! Hard hiding it at college though (until mum went and told them ) ALOT of baggy jumpers.
