For a tickley cough and "gungy" throat at 30 weeks pregnant?

I've tried the hot drinks and toast thing but it's the 3rd day now and no real improvement.

My throat doesn't hurt but is uncomfortable and feels like something is lodged there (mucus I guess) I have had a tiny bit of a stuffy nose but no "cold" or flu virus... I thought it would have turned into one of these by now as DP was very sick at the start of the week with a heavy cold.

So my question is what do you think will help clear / ease it? Can I take throat sweets in pregnancy?

  • spoonfull of honey seems to help soothe the throat
  • steam inhalation with maybe some vicks or olbas seems to help the gungy feeling
-tickly coughs are rubbish and nothinng seems to help them except waiting :(

I'm so impatient and generally a rubbish person when I'm not feeling too great so, yeah, these types of coughs and things are horrific.

I find it's worse at night, as soon as I lie down I'm coughing to the point I start to hurt in my ribs etc.

I'll try the honey for sure, and the steam again x

google suggests gargling with salt water and also a pinch of turmeric

OnNaturesCourse · 15/09/2017 17:04

Salt water gargle and my pregnancy gag reflex just don't mix unfortunately lol.

AnUtter... It's very annoying, isn't it? Hope you feel better soon xxx

This is quite grim, but if you can fill your bathroom with steam then get in the shower it will loosen the mucus. Cough it all up. I do this when I get bronchitis then cover myself in Vicks and go to bed.

I'm 32 weeks & on week 6 of a horrendous cough. Been to the GP twice as I was coughing so much I was making myself sick but just a virus & thankfully seems to be clearing up now.

Things that did help were sleeping propped up on pillows, lots to drink, especially thicker drinks like fruit juice or milk based drinks, yoghurts & jelly helped my throat, Vicks on my feet under socks at night, sucking on hard boiled sweets.

Hope it clears up soon.

OnNaturesCourse · 15/09/2017 20:37

How do you sleep propped up when you're meant to sleep on your side? Genuinely curious lol

I rotate between back & sides. I have my head & top half of chest on two really thick pillows so any gunk is flowing down not up if that makes. It's surprisingly comfortable considering I normally sleep with one very thin pillow.

I'll give it a shot tonight!

Spoon of honey in some boiled water with a capful of cider vinegar. Gargle with d's h mouthful before swallowing. 3 -4 times a day . And for next time start this as soon as you feel any tickley or scratchyness in your throat.
I had bother with my sinuses early in the year, having to clear my throat constantly with headache around my nose and eyes and top row of teeth sore. And lovely yellow fluid in my nose that I only noticed when wiping on a tissue.
Have a cold now myself, on top of the sickness. I feel your pain.

OnNaturesCourse · 16/09/2017 09:20

Woke this morning completely choked. It would appear that the sore throat was just a warning sign. My nose is now stuffed, head throbbing, eyes watering and top teeth feel like their about to fall out. Sinuses must be blocked up. On the plus side, my throat is starting to heal. Lol

I hope you feel better soon op , it's grim when you're pregnant and unable to neck drugs in order to numb your symptoms.

OnNaturesCourse · 16/09/2017 09:27

Eugh. I just want to sleep it off but sleep just isn't happening at the moment.

Thank you x

I'm the same, I'm 37 weeks with a cough and annoying stuffy nose. I've been having hot orange juice with honey a few times a day, and sucking on soothers.

Hairgician · 16/09/2017 13:34

Oh dear poor you.Flowers

ememem84 · 16/09/2017 13:49

Same here. I bought these for basal congestion at night time yet something else to add to the glamour of pregnancy

They seem to help a little. I've taken paracetamol because midwife said it was ok.

Aside from that I'm resting as much as possible and drinking a lot of water in an attempt to flush it out.

What can I take...
Suzi763 · 16/09/2017 15:44

Don't take hot drinks too much. It's not good for your baby. Try green tea with ginger. It is really effective solution of cough. I faced such situation but not during pregnancy. It was after delivery. I had c-section for my first pregnancy. I suffered in cough while I had stitches. It was very tuff for me to cough. Every time when I start cough, stitches pain becomes so miserable. I drunk a lot of water almost 3-4 bottle in a day excluding nights. It was like as something stuck in my throat. I thanked God when stitched were opened. You should take rest as much as possible.

Moanyoldcow · 16/09/2017 19:55

How are hot drinks bad for the baby?

ememem84 · 16/09/2017 20:06

moany I wondered that. If they are im stuffed. I've been having multiple cups of tea and coffee (real/decaf/herbal insert as appropriate) throughout my pregnancy. Along with the occasional hot water and lemon.

Moanyoldcow · 16/09/2017 20:08

They aren't. I just don't know how some of this mad shit gets around.

ememem84 · 16/09/2017 20:20

I figured not. Otherwise surely midwives would have mentioned it right?! I mean who doesn't like a hot drink?

I'd have gone proper "hulk smash" if I wasn't allowed a cup of tea!

HailLapin · 16/09/2017 20:51

I cannot eat brie , rare steak...I'd love a proper beer or a glass of pinot. Most drinks give me heartburn.

Nobody is taking away my cups of hot English breakfast tea!

ememem84 · 16/09/2017 20:57

Ooh rare steak. My thing is runny eggs. Cannot wait for a dippy egg and soldiers.

And a rare steak. And a lovely glass bottle of Malbec.

Moanyoldcow · 16/09/2017 23:04

I'd love some Brie! And a lovely glass of Sauv Blanc. And pâté.

Best avoid that tea though Hmm
