Soft ice-cream from the ice-cream van - good or bad...

I enjoyed a lovely 99 with a flake and sauce and everything this afternoon. Then I was suddenly hit with the question - should I have had that, am I allowed soft ice-cream!?

If anybody has any knowledge on this, it'd be great to hear - he'll be coming around again with all this nice weather and I'm hoping I'll know whether I should ignore him or not!

I am pretty sure that is bad - listeria risk.

But then my GP had me convinced mozerella on PIzzas was bad and I found out 6yrs later he was wrong ...

Malaleche · 02/04/2007 22:51

bad

hairymclary · 02/04/2007 22:51

why is it bad????

llareggub · 02/04/2007 22:52

Yes, potentially bad due to listeria. I ate smoked salomon all the way through my pregnancy because I never thought to check. Probably better safe than sorry though.

You could however go and buy some Ben and Jerry's or Haagan Daz so you don't miss out.

hairymclary · 02/04/2007 22:53

why are you more likely to get listeria from it?? it's chilled

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 02/04/2007 22:53

here

"Ice cream:
Avoid soft-whip ice cream from machines (Listeria can survive at low temperatures if the machines are not clean)."

Hilllary · 02/04/2007 22:54

Hi PuppleLostPrincess

I'm pretty sure its bad, something to do with Listeria, although I did have a thing for Cadbury's McFlurys and ate them by the ton, didnt do my dd any harm

JodieG1 · 02/04/2007 22:54

I avoided them in pregancy.

PurpleLostPrincess · 02/04/2007 22:54

Oh my goodness! Do I have to look out for some sort of symptoms now?!!?? What have I done!!!!

(will stick to the Chocolate Fudge Brownie in future obviously!)

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 02/04/2007 22:54

It is only actually a problem if you do contract listeriosis. The ice cream itself won't harm baby...to put this into perspective, it is not worth worrying now - but you should avoid the risk of listeriosis by avoiding it in teh future...

noddyholder · 02/04/2007 22:55

god I love it and don't want to know whats in it in case I have to give it up.Also love the chocolate flake and that synthetic strawberry sauce

Marina · 02/04/2007 22:55

Listeria is rare though, so try not to worry too much...just avoid it from now on

Hilllary · 02/04/2007 22:55

Dont pannic you will be fine, I ate parmesan(Sp?) which was unparstarised and worried myself sick too but honestly you will be fine just dont do it again.

hairymclary · 02/04/2007 22:56

plp i wouldn't worry. it's clearly only a danger if there was listeria bacteria in the machine and then the machine wasn't cleaned properly.

highly unlikely i'd say. I mean, lets face it, we'd hardly be able to eat anything if we stuck to all the rules for pg would we

Whats wrong with crunchy nut cornflakes

And I thought whippy ice cream was bad because it contains raw egg?

PurpleLostPrincess · 02/04/2007 23:00

Thank you for your reassurances. I'm now convincing myself that the machine must be clean because its the start of the 'season' for ice-cream machines (well it is for ours, haven't seen him for ages!) so he must have cleaned it ready for today's rounds...

I'm definitely steering clear from now on - I'm glad I asked!!

Thank you again xx

crunchy nut cornflakes

I don't think ice cream contains any egg but could be wrong.

many foods which are to be avoided are on the list because some food poisoning is quite harmful to baby, and they are high risk for the particular type of food posioning. It is not that the food is particulaly harmful it is that you might get food posoining which might then bye harmful

It is the same with lambing. Baby lambs don't actually harm you but they can carry a bacteria which you might catch we is very harmful...

hairymclary · 02/04/2007 23:05

peanuts pesha.

i think you have to weigh up the risks though. I mean the risk of getting listeria from an ice cream must be minute, otherwise you'd always be hearing about it wouldn't you?

PurpleLostPrincess · 02/04/2007 23:05

I hadn't twigged the crunchy 'nut' bit at all and I've had a few bowls of it. I was genuinely sitting here wondering what on earth could be wrong with them!

I'm beginning to think that being blonde, having irish blood and being pg is a lethal but entertaining combination!

But i thought it was just peanuts that had to be avoided not all nuts

Pesha · 02/04/2007 23:07
hairymclary · 02/04/2007 23:07

it is peanuts in them though. I have serious cravings for all nuts atm and trying my hardest not to give in lol

Blu · 02/04/2007 23:07

"so he must have cleaned it ready for today's rounds... " or at the very least, dusted off the rat droppings that had accumulated after a winter in his lock-up by the canal...

Pesha · 02/04/2007 23:09

Oh
