Soft ice-cream from the ice-cream van - good or bad...

I enjoyed a lovely 99 with a flake and sauce and everything this afternoon. Then I was suddenly hit with the question - should I have had that, am I allowed soft ice-cream!?

If anybody has any knowledge on this, it'd be great to hear - he'll be coming around again with all this nice weather and I'm hoping I'll know whether I should ignore him or not!

I didn't avoid nuts TOTALLY, but there are no history of allergies ad only had a few in teh form of snickers and stuff like that occasionally.

Pesha · 02/04/2007 23:12

Ah well only 2 weeks left so no point worrying now!

Hilllary · 02/04/2007 23:13

didn't realise this was about pregnancy when i posted yesterday just thought it was for greedies

HoraceWimp · 03/04/2007 09:45

I thought it was due to slamonella risk
but tbh have you EVER heard of anyone being ill from eating an ice cream?

HoraceWimp · 03/04/2007 09:45

salmonella even

just thought I'd add that incubation period for listeria is quite long, I think about 2 weeks Therefore you don't necessarily get symptoms the next day etc.

Oh and it is one of those bacterium that thrive at cool temps unlike alot of others.

It is rare though.

MrsBadger · 03/04/2007 12:20

Good factsheet about listeria from the HPA here

Next time have a Fab instead (yum!).

sunnywong · 03/04/2007 12:21

Mrs Thatcher invented the formula

that may be worth considering

As`a teenager I had a Summer job at a seaside stall selling Mr Whippy ice cream and since then have been totally put off eating the stuff. The machine was switched off at night and then the ice cream was refrozen the next day, it was made with a powder and was mixed with a dirty old stick, with dust and dirt just being stirred in and often there was oil in the ice cream which I was instructed to still serve but just try and disguise it. So I would definitely go the Haagen Daaz/ Ben and Jerry route as I'm sure they must be made more hygenically !

bewilderbeast · 03/04/2007 12:47

you shouldn't (as far as i am aware) have mr whippy ice cream when pregnant (my dp also worked in ice cream parlour as a teenager and would tell people you shouldn't eat them anyway) you also shouldn't have the homemade style of ice cream from ice cream carts as it doesn't hold up well to not being kept totally frozen

oh and it's pregnant ewes that you should stay away from rather than lambs, the ewes carry a bacteria which can cause spontaneous miscarraige
