I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is great: 024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Satsooma - I took prochloperazine or however you spell it until about 34 weeks when my supply ran out. No one told me I shouldn't be taking it and the GP authorised my order of it around the start of the 3rd trimester. I admit to not reading NICE guidelines or the info that came with the tablets as I didn't want to panic myself with possible side effects if the gp thought I should take them. That probably doesnt help you.

beanhunter · 24/07/2017 18:11

Lucinda - not done yet. About another 2hrs of unloading and the unpacking will get done gradually. As long as the small girls bedroom is done a bit and we have beds we can cope with most of the rest of chaos. Thankfully a v kind friend in the new place has taken my daughter for dinner and a bath so that's got her out for a couple of hours as she was bored sideways.
I didn't have fluids as had a good evening and felt ok first thing. Flagging now but a sofa just got unloaded so am having a sit down. Had to stop and vomit on the motorway here though.

NonStopDisco · 24/07/2017 19:12

satsooma I've been taking metachlopromide for about 5 weeks now, docs are happy it's not having any adverse effects, so it might be worth seeing how you go with them- they're working for me ( but as soon as I get cocky and try and give them up, I'm head down the loo again)

Melleebacca · 24/07/2017 19:31

Satsoooma - first pregnancy was on ondansetron till 34w, and this time around till 33w. I vomit in labour and was given IV metachlorpromide when I was in active labour. Midwife and doctor had no problem with my meds in the 3rd trimester, the midwife was actually surprised that I came off the ondansetron already.

Natsku · 24/07/2017 20:00

The doctor that prescribed me metachlopromide never said anything about limiting it to 5 days only - he prescribed a box of 30 plus refills. Gave me diarrhoea though so I gave up on it (though I wonder if combining it with ondansetron would reduce the constipation side effect - someone should look into that!) and was given it in my IV at least once a day for the three weeks I was in hospital with my last pregnancy.

LucindaE · 24/07/2017 20:18

NonStopDisco I am glad meto suits you. Quite a few women on here have been on it for months.
satsooma I hope the doctor finds something effective you feel comfortable on (I know: - ungrammatical, finishing wiht the prepositon - but I am in a lazy mood today).
DeadDoorPost and Bluesyou What a couple of youngsters! How (normally) full of energy... Mother Hen says the cake ought to be delivered...
...and beanhunter Mother Hen says don't overdo it. Sit on that sofa; let OH do it.
HaichM I hope you soon strut (or waddle) up the drawbridge to the famous Pink Castle.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Hi everyone,Sorry I know this probably has been covered before but what vitamins do you take. I'm really struggling with well woman tablets so GP suggested folic acid and vit d but I'm concerned I'm not getting everything I need. I got really anaemic with my daughter and was really breathless. Any suggestions?

Mustang27 · 24/07/2017 21:52

User they are all a nightmare I wait to take them after a vomit session as I usually have an hour or two before the next. I'm taking pregnacare now but I was taking a seven seas one before that. They are all huge tablets that are a nightmare to swallow and iv sicked them up plenty. I think your better to continue with the multivitamin and get as much as you can even if that's just once every couple of days it stays down.

beanhunter · 24/07/2017 22:39

Yes boss. Shall do. Tomorrow I plan to stay in bed and do any internet or phone based jobs only.
Paying for my efforts in vomiting. Also got given some thiamine by the epau after my fluids (only picked up today). What's that for?

DeadDoorpost · 24/07/2017 22:51

user I actually don't take any vitamins.when I was early on i was throwing up so frequently and so violently that they wouldn't have dissolved or had time to even get into my system so I didn't bother. Didn't even have folic acid beforehand as I didn't know it was a suggested thing. MW hasn't said anything to me about it so I guess I'm fine.

I do have a hell of a lot of veg and milk though so maybe that helps. But I always keep an eye on my iron intake (and eat loads of coco pops) as I've had iron deficiencies before.

Lemondrop99 · 24/07/2017 23:19

Satsooma, I've dropped my regular meds now. Did a few weeks ago. Still get horrible nausea and intermittent vomiting but I just put up with it. Now I just lie in bed and moan instead! I just couldn't face any more ondansetron constipation. Although I was bad enough last week that I did take a couple of ondansetron. I also have some promthezine on hand if I choose to take that instead, if I can handle the grogginess.

User, the main thing is folic acid and Vit D. You can get these in a very small tablet which are generally easier to take than the big horsepill pregnancy vitamins. Try your best to take those once a day, as much as possible (particularly in the first 12 weeks - which annoyingly is when it's often hardest to keep stuff down!). Take a pregnancy vitamin if you can, but honestly, baby will just take what it needs from you in most cases. I've heard of HG mums losing calcium from their bones and teeth because baby leeching it! So don't panic too much about vits and diet quality. In an ideal world, you'd be chomping veg and taking vitamins, but baby will almost always get what it needs from you.

After a crappy few weeks, I'm feeling alright today. Managed to meet a friend for dinner and enjoyed a Nando's. Quite pleased.

Melleebacca · 24/07/2017 23:58

Bean - thiamine is just vit b1 or b2 (can't remember which, been awhile since I've worked in a lab). B vitamins are meant to help with nausea too, but have the opposite effect with me.

User - I'm a terrible person. I could barely stomach the tiny ondansetron pills at the beginning of pregnancy, let alone the 10 x bigger gigantic pregnancy vitamins. I've only just started taking them again recently. My bloods show everything is fine, but my iron levels are borderline.
If it makes you feel any better, I did the same with DD, and she's the healthiest person in our house.

Melleebacca · 25/07/2017 00:05

This story really resonates with me, just in case anyone else wants a read - thespinoff.co.nz/parenting/18-07-2017/when-pregnancy-is-hell-what-hyperemesis-is-really-like/

Lemondrop99 · 25/07/2017 00:09

Isn't B6 the one that's supposed to help with sickness?

Melleebacca · 25/07/2017 01:13

Lemon - yes. I can't remember what thiamine is meant to help with, I was prescribed it with DD. I might remember when this cold passes, and I feel less foggy.

Tried sneezing baby out today. Did not work.

Natsku · 25/07/2017 07:08

Thiamine is b6

I haven't been taking my multivitamin regularly as they make me feel sick but I eat tons of salad so I'm hoping my vitamin levels are OK. Barely able to eat meat and the liquid iron makes me vomit so I'm probably still anaemic but it was only slightly anaemic in the beginning so I'll cope.

user1471462428 · 25/07/2017 09:03

I can't eat anything healthy without throwing up so thought I could dose up on multi vitamins but think I'll just plod on with my folic acid till I get my blood results back. I don't feel so guilty about not taking though.

Oklahoma · 25/07/2017 09:13

The whole concept of trying to take vitamins with HG is a joke. I haven't managed any in either pregnancy and the docs were totally ok with that. As for calcium leeching that oneness is true. I now have arthritis in both my feet because Oklette leeched all my calcium last time.

Mustang I found 19 weeks and currently 23 week were both horrible growth spurt / hormone surge weeks. I'm in the throes of the 23 week one currently. They last about 10 days with me.

Toomanydogs · 25/07/2017 09:42

Morning ladies, I'm back after a week of feeling near human- been taking Cyclizine and had 6 days of no sickness just exhaustion and mild nausea, however I've been sick twice already this morning so think my respite is over!
On the topic of vitamins I was worrying a bit as apart from this last week I've not been keeping food or much water down so the vitamins didn't stand a chance, but MW and nurses didn't seem too concerned when I was in, I did get some smaller plain folic acid and vit d tablets though rather than the big pregnancy multi vitamins.

Natsku · 25/07/2017 10:11

Went to the midwife today and she did a quick ultrasound Grin baby was wriggling around like crazy in there and we listened to the heart beat (DD was with me and she was pretty amazed by it). Got my meds renewed though the pharmacy didn't have any in stock but the pharmacist called the other pharmacy to reserve some for me so I'll go there later or tomorrow morning.

Feeling more nauseous today but haven't been sick yet. Made the mistake of opening a tub from the fridge that had rotten watermelon in and came close though. Still not managing much fluids (giving the urine sample was pretty difficult!) but don't think I'm dehydrated.

Anatidae · 25/07/2017 10:22

There's no real need for multivitamins in a normal pregnancy. You only need folic acid as a supplement and possibly vitamin d. So don't stress about not getting multivitamins down. If you can, great. Do try your best to get your folic acid in though, in the first few months

LucindaE · 25/07/2017 10:32

I believe you can get vitamin pills in drop form? I don't know if that might help?

OP posts:
Ameliablue · 25/07/2017 11:23

Last pregnancies, I got my own multivitamins and couldn't manage with the size of them and the sickness but this time, the doctor prescribed some folic acid and they are tiny so far easier to manage. I wish I'd realised sooner you could get small ones.

Lemondrop99 · 25/07/2017 13:43

On my really bad days, I found I was mostly able to keep down a tiny folic acid and Vit D pill but taking it immediately after vomiting, then hoping it was absorbed before I threw up again!

As it happens, I should have been on a higher dose of folic acid due to my BMI but no one told me until it was too late. Luckily it doesn't seem to have had an effect.
