Sigh. Baby girl due in three weeks. We just can't decide on a girl's name. We're even starting to squabble about it!

Current names in the hat are, in no particular orde of preference:

Biba Grace
Ophelia Jude
Violet
Francesca Ruby/Pearl

But we're open to suggestions! Give us some thoughts/inspiration! I seem to have ploughed through so many baby names books. I just don't want to curse my child with mockery or negative responses.

Everyone will mistake Biba for Beaver

Like Francesca on your list

PinkTulips · 23/03/2007 13:41

sorry, none of those are ones i'd ever pick tbh!

i've always loved Eve but it doesn't go with dp's surname

WinkyWinkola · 23/03/2007 13:42

Eve is a lovely name but I've noticed three Eve's at DS's nursery already.

wildwoman · 23/03/2007 13:43

What about Eva?

conkertree · 23/03/2007 13:44

i actually really like ophelia - if it sounds good with your accent (it wouldnt where i live). really pretty - live olivia but more unusual.

lulumama · 23/03/2007 13:44

love francesca...and frankie !

biba...bit tooooo retro

ophelia...eek ! ponetastic, no?

violet...love it!

and would go for pearl over ruby, as pearl more unusual !

wildwoman · 23/03/2007 13:46

My sister is calling her dd1 layla... pretty name but I can't say it without hearing the song in my head!

berolina · 23/03/2007 13:46

I think of Jude as a male name.

I would recombine your suggestions and opt for Francesca Grace.

CadburyCremeSquonk · 23/03/2007 13:46

I think it would be very difficult to SAY Layla, easy to sing it though.

kiwinat · 23/03/2007 13:47

Ophelia Grace is a good combo.

Twinkie1 · 23/03/2007 13:47

Harriet?

PestoEasterMonster · 23/03/2007 13:48

I like Francesca Grace too, a nice ring to it. I also like the names Claudia and Valentina.

wildwoman · 23/03/2007 13:48

Layla you've got me on my knees ...I'm off!

nogoes · 23/03/2007 13:48

I like Violet and Francesca. I think Francesca is particularly lovely, I imagine she would grow up to be sophisticated, elegant & cultured woman(overactive imagination today).

Biba is sweet for a baby but not particularly sophisticated for when she is older. Ophelia is a teeny bit pretensious.

wildwoman · 23/03/2007 13:48

Love Claudia

cupcakesgalore · 23/03/2007 13:49

Lottie, Saskia, Lola, Mia, Cicely...just a few thoughts.

WinkyWinkola · 23/03/2007 13:52

Thanks very much for the responses!

Layla is a great name but friends have called their DD Layla.

How do you pronounce Cicely? Ci ci lee?

Claudia has been vetoed by DH - ex GF. Saskia too because of Big Brother girl.

Biba - beaver. Giggle. Never thought of that.

Thought Ophelia could be a bit poncey but it IS pretty. But will the child be constantly asked about madness and suicide?

OP posts:
cupcakesgalore · 23/03/2007 13:54

Cicely - is pronounced like the island Sicily - si-sil-ee. It's an old name - I love it but can't use it cos I have a slight diff. saying the letter 's' and my surname also begins with an s. A real mouthful! Also like Astrid, Eliza and Violet. And Mariella and Marianne.

PinkTulips · 23/03/2007 13:55

only thing about francesca is could you live with frannie? ocz that's what it'll be shortened to.

how about Grace Ophelia? nice elegantly beautiful first name and the odd one as a second name?

wildwoman · 23/03/2007 13:56

It's weird how we associate names with people we know ie I refused to call dd1 Jessica becuase every Jessica I had ever met (sorry if it's your name) was a complete trollope! My best friend's dd is called Jessica and I now love the name.

ScottishThistle · 23/03/2007 13:59

Out of the names listed I like Francesca but love Cesca.

goingfor3 · 23/03/2007 14:10

Francesca is my favourite girls name ever! I really don't like Fran, Frannie or other shortened forms. DD is called Francesca an is really proud of her name, she tells people off of they shorten it.

MamaG · 23/03/2007 14:13

I think Francesca is a gorgeous name

I would call a girl that if i had another

like "chesca" for short too and "chessy"

scorpio1 · 23/03/2007 14:14

i like biba, but then im a fan of unusual names.

at least no-one else will be called it

if i ever have a girl (unlikely,we have 3 boys between us) i would like to call her Alani.
