Hi All

After a very worrying week of brown discharge I'm going for a scan tomorrow morning but I'm unsure as to what kind of scan it will be. I'll be 6 w 6d tomorrow. I was that all over the place when I spoke to EPU I forgot to ask. What kind of scans have other people had at this stage?

Abdominal after brown discharge. I've included the photo for you.

I was 6 weeks, 5 days

Carty76 · 13/06/2017 17:42

Thank you! Irrespective of the fact that I'm not quite 7 weeks?

Well, I was 6 weeks 5 days and told the ultrasound technician that but she decided to try abdominal rather than internal and we could see a heartbeat and she measured the embryo without a problem!

How long have you been spotting for? Has it stopped?

Carty76 · 13/06/2017 17:53

Started last Wednesday and has only been when I wipe and even then sometimes there isn't any. I'm only getting a tiny bit now but I'm so, so frightened they won't find a heartbeat. I've been a completely irrational woman!

I was exactly the same and had exactly the same: brown discharge when I wiped, which turned light pink/ red for a day and really scared me.

I'm 19 weeks now and everything seems fine. All perfect at the 12 week scan.

I'm not a medical expert but I think you'll be fine. The idea of having an internal scan really didn't appeal to me and thankfully, they didn't suggest it but had they done, I would have asked if they could try abdominally first.

What time is your scan?

Carty76 · 13/06/2017 17:59

I can't imagine the sheer relief you must have felt!!! It's terrifying isn't it? It's 8:50am which is good as I can get it over and done with. I lurch from thinking it's going to be ok to it's not.Confused

It was really scary. I waited 6 days from being assessed by EPU to having the scan and really felt quite sensitive and like I was in limbo for that whole time.

It was a huge relief, definitely. I wonder if you ever really stop worrying though - I worried again before my 12 week scan and am now feeling a bit on edge about my 20 week one, next week!

Will you let me know what the outcome is tomorrow, please?

Carty76 · 13/06/2017 18:07

That's exactly how I feel! I don't think you ever do stop worrying! Wishing you lots of luck with your scan, it'll be fine. I'll let you know how it goes Smile.

Thank you. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow morning! Just remember, there is every chance it will be really good news Smile

Carty76 · 13/06/2017 18:12

Bless you. I really, really hope so.

Hi! Just chiming in with my experiences - both pregnancies I've had pink spotting through the first tri, had a transvaginal scan at 5 weeks with DS1 and abdominal scans at 7,8 and 9 weeks with DS2.

The first trimester always seems to make me a bag full of nerves, I think it's the uncertainty mixed with hormones. Then spotting on top of that makes everything so much worse. But it's fab to see the little heartbeat (even at 5 weeks), and v reassuring. The baby grow 1mm a day at this stage and the difference between my 7,8 and 9 week scans is amazing! Tiny blob at 7 weeks, recognisable baby at 9.

I ended up putting my spotting down to vaginal/cervical changes or a bit of thrush as opposed to anything uterus/baby related. Also remember that brown blood is old blood.

So! I'm now 18 weeks with DS2 and as soon as I hit the 2nd trimester my hormones must have settled down as I instantly felt so much less worried.

Good luck! :)

magpiemay · 13/06/2017 18:17

Wishing you luck for tomorrow please let us know how it goes. I'm 5 weeks 2 days and have had the exact same as you with dark discharge when I wipe on and off since Friday.

I totally understand how you are feeling and as many people that say not too worry it's all I can think about too!

We have been told to wait 2 weeks until our early scan can be booked and it's feeling like a lifetime away!

Really really hope it all goes well for you tomorrow Flowers

Carty76 · 13/06/2017 18:21

Thank you!! It really does help when people tell you their experiences. I'm constantly telling myself "it's brown and not red, it's brown and not red", it's become my pigging mantra!! I had a miscarriage last year which doesn't help with my negativity but I'm trying!

It's so incredibly hard isn't it? Mine was supposed to be Friday but I called EPU and basically said I was going out of my kind with worry and they brought it forward. I'm that much of an idiot I've not been able to go work. I work with patients and I just know I may have got things wrong due to not concentrating. Sending healthy baby vibes right your way!

Hello, I had a scan at 6 weeks due to brown discharge and it was an internal scan, everything was fine they said they couldn't see any reason for it happening and weren't concerned after seeing heartbeat

Hope everything goes okay! :)

MissCardew · 13/06/2017 18:31

Just to add my experience, I had brown discharge at 5/6 weeks. I had an internal scan at 6wks 3 days and no heartbeat was found (she could see the sac, yolk and fetal pole) - the sonographer said this was absolutely normal. I had to wait 2 weeks for a rescan which dragged on forever but from another internal scan at 8wks 3 days she saw a strong heartbeat and everything looks fine.
I believe that 6 weeks is the earliest that a heartbeat can be seen so don't be too worried if they can't find it - easier said than done I know!
Fingers crossed that all will be fine tomo Flowers

Bungleboggs · 13/06/2017 18:36

I had bleeding/discharge. Internal scan at 6 weeks and they found two in there Grin

Carty76 · 13/06/2017 18:39

ITs so good hearing all these positive stories! Thank you ladies!!! I just wish I didn't have this feeling that I've lost the baby 😥. Negative I know but just being honest about how I feel.

Even your normal intuition will be messed up by pregnancy hormones Carty - I felt exactly the same (convinced something had gone wrong) when I went for a reassurance scan at 6+4. They didn't offer me an abdominal one, only a transvaginal one but found the heartbeat and said she'd want to redate me probably to 6+3. Had my 12 week scan today and all looking okay. Lots of others in our antenatal group on MN also had brown discharge on and off and all are fine! Good luck for tomorrow, try to distract yourself tonight!

mysecret321 · 13/06/2017 18:44

Thank u :) he is now 16w2d and already a few days ahead of his due date which is on the 27th Nov, wishing u a healthy outcome xxx

Carty76 · 13/06/2017 18:46

That is reassuring!!! Thank you. I'm going to make tea, oh the glamour, and try and watch a film. Don't think there's going to much sleeping done tonight Hmm.
