I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Blondes, she is so beautiful!!!! I had a lovely dream about my baby last night.... it was depressing to wake up and realise that not only do I still have to go through labour but I still have four months to go 😫

Thingy, most of us on this thread are on ondansetron, as are thousands of women throughout the UK. I was a bit worried about taking it at first, but had no choice as it's the only thing that really works. No one wants to test on pregnant women so it's hard to prove something is safe. However, anecdotally, thousands of women in the U.K take it every year and there's nothing to suggest it does any harm to baby. Posting on the PSS forum about it might give you some reassurance, it did with me.

fourcorneredcircle · 03/06/2017 11:04

Awwww blondes, what a lovely picture 😍

I've been in the latent phase of labour for a couple of days now. Had an initial show on Wednesday which has continued on and off since.

Spent Thursday at the DAU as between the show (which apparently in my case is far more than average but still "normal") and the vomiting I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. The vomiting is now under control(ish). I'm having lots of ice lollies and MW gave me kesostix to keep an eye on myself. So far, safe enough.

Had a few 2/3 hour sessions of mild/short contractions (especially at night) but most of the time I just carry on with life.

Looking forward to meeting baby but it still doesn't feel very imminent! DH is being a star. I'm getting pretty fed up. Apparently the latent phase can last weeks! 😮 Thankfully MW thinks that because I'm having such a large amount of show it shouldn't for me!

LucindaE · 03/06/2017 11:20

mrsb87 How are you? How are the ketones measuring?
Blondes What an adorable baby. Thanks for coming on to encourage people. Great advice about inductions.
FlapAttack Was it you who has sunburn besides Hyperemesis? That is painful. It's so easy to be caught out if it's breezy.
fourcorneredcircle All luck with things progressing speedily! Hopefully, soon, those bile runs will be a thing of the past.

How exciting four! I hope things move quickly for you and that you don't have too much vomiting in the mean time.

Peace, we need an update!

LucindaE · 03/06/2017 13:27

Lemondrop I meant to say, if you weren't the one who trained as a nurse, who was it? You do seem knowledgeable the pharmacy, anyway.

I've spent all day feeling with ravenously hungry or terribly sick.
Each time I'm hungry I fancy something specific (was a tuna sandwich at lunchtime) but if I eat I'm sick almost immediately. Have a headache too as can't stand tea and usually drink loads each day. Trying to drink water but can't drink too much or sick again

FlapAttack88 · 03/06/2017 18:06

Cant have you tried orange capri suns or coco viva coconut water? Hold water in your mouth for 2 seconds then spit it out if you can't keep any fluids down? What level are your ketones? Hope you're ok and don't be put off by that stupid dr you saw last time to call for help if you need it.. a and e for a drip or 111 for out of hours :(

byvelds11 · 03/06/2017 18:08

Hi everyone! I am new here and this is my first post - I hope I am doing this right! I am 10 weeks pregnant with my second child and have HG. I had HG in my first pregnancy too, and my son is now 4 years old - I waited a long time to get pregnant again as it was not a good experience for me at all. I really hated being pregnant. I was living in Canada then (I am Canadian) and went on a medication called diclectin, which isn't available here. I have been very sick, to the point where I've hired a mother's helper to help me at home with my son as I just can't parent him all day with how badly I am feeling. I was nauseous ALL day, with no break, regardless of what I ate, how much B6 I took, or how many ginger lozenges I had. I was vomiting in the afternoon and evenings. I am now on zofran, 3x a day, and it seems to be helping during the day as I haven't vomited during the day since starting it which is a huge improvement! I started it just 4 days ago. Before trying zofran I tried cyclizine but it made me so sedated that I had to stop taking it. My problem is that the zofran only works during the day, despite taking it at 8am, 2:30pm, and 9pm. By about 4pm I am super nauseous (as I was ALL day before taking the zofran) and miserable. Has anyone else experienced this where the medication doesn't seem to be enough to help in the evening? Do you have any suggestions? I am grateful to feel like a normal person during the day but the evenings/nights are the worst. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated!!! Thank you!

flossyfloss · 03/06/2017 18:37

Hi byvelds and congratulations

Sorry you are suffering. I'm also on the same medication as you but find evenings are really bad regardless - the only relief I find is to to take cyclizine around 9pm and sleep until morning.

Lemondrop99 · 03/06/2017 18:38

Hi byvelds. Sorry you had to join us. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can do this twice! I'm not sure I will....

What dose of zofran are you on? 4mg? You can take 4mg up to 4 times daily, so might be worth discussing with your GP.

Alternatively you can try cyclizine (did nothing for me) or promethazine alongside the zofran. I 100% sympathise with the sedation thing, I took one promethazine at 10am yesterday and it zonked me out for the whole day, it's awful. However if I get really rough, I do take the odd one - although I generally try to take it as late in the evening as possible, after 6pm, so if I get sleepy, it doesn't matter too much as I can just go to bed.

There are other drugs like Stemitil you can try too. Have a chat with your GP.

Sometimes nauseous does come at certain times of the day, and there's not a huge amount that can be done. You can try snacking and sugary drinks to stave it off?

Also, are you having problems with acid? I had raging heartburn and acid reflux and that made me nauseous. Treating that has helped a bit too.

Melleebacca · 03/06/2017 19:36

Four - I have a friend who spent 4 weeks in the latent phase of labour. She was worried about having a prem, and ended up with baby coming a few days overdue. I've also read that the if it takes awhile, it's the body's way of making sure baby is in the optimal position for delivery. Good luck. Will be thinking of you.

Blondes - what an absolute cutie. This time around, I can only do water, but with DD, flat fizzy helped a lot. Such a difference between pregnancies.

Can't - get a straw and sip fluids. Just a couple of sips every few minutes. It takes about 10mins for water to absorb fully into your system. So take it slow and lie down to discourage vomiting. It's good that you're craving foods, but you will probably only be able to handle a couple of bites due to stomach shrinkage. I'm almost 29w, and only now can I eat a small meal and not feel awful straight afterwards.

Byvelds - I was taking my pills at 7am and 2pm and by 4pm I would be vomiting regardless. The pills help, but in the depths of it (weeks 9-14), they really just take the edge off. Hang in there, you're doing everything right, and it will get better.

Surviving here. The long slog of waiting ahead of me. I rearranged my chocolate cupboard in preparation of being able to eat it again (and to stop hubby eating my favorites). Passed my glucose test, which wasn't surprising as I can't eat sugar. Iron levels are starting to dip so on iron pills and guzzling lactulose for the constipation. Going to start weaning off ondansetron next week. Hoping the nausea doesn't rush back. Waves to all

LucindaE · 03/06/2017 19:42

byvelds11 Welcome. Sorry you are suffering. About the 10 weeks mark is the worst for many. As you are a veteran, I don't need to say my usual spiel about have you got kesostix or a list of drinks and a few foods some can stand. I'll just say, many find flat full sugar coke, the juice and fruit of tinned fruit (especially peaches) and ice lollies helpful. Some find that adding another drug to the Ondansetron/Zofran helps, if your GP is willing to do that. The fatigue at the end of the afternoon tends to make things worse. Is your four year old going to nursery/school to give you a break?
Great advice from everyone.
Got to add those new dates to the due dates list.

Ergh, anyone seem to simply not be suggesting what they do eat? I started to feel really sick, took an ondansetron but obviously too late as about 20 minutes later I spontaneously threw up everywhere Hmm I've not eaten much today so couldn't work out what on Earth I was throwing up.... until I recognised it as the breakfast I ate at 10am, literally 10 hours ago!

I seem to be stuck in this cycle of 3-4 of feeling ok, then 3-4 days of nausea and vomiting. Don't get me wrong, it's a million times better than the first trimester, but I think I'm coming to accept that I'm probably going to be stuck with this all the way through (was hoping it would sod off at 20 weeks, but I'm 23 weeks now and still vomiting Sad).

I'm genuinely thinking I might not physically set foot back in the office again before my maternity leave, my sickness is just too unpredictable. Yesterday I was so rough, I'd have been stranded there, there was no way I could have made it home on a train from central London. Luckily work aren't pressuring me, and are happy for me to WAH, but I still think they expect me to turn up again at some point! As an aside, the second stage of our redundancy consultation starts on 13 June so that'll be interesting....

LucindaE · 03/06/2017 19:53

Melleebacca Great advice too. Have you been advised to wean off Ondansetron if you feel up to it?

OP posts:
Lemondrop99 · 03/06/2017 19:55

*digesting not suggesting!

LucindaE · 03/06/2017 19:55

Lemondrop Cross posted. That sounds dismal; better than at the beginning, obviously, but you can't predict how you'll feel. I'm glad work are making an effort to be understanding.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions!!! I really appreciate them! I am seeing my GP this week for a refill on my prescription before I head back to Canada for a 3 week vacation to see family and friends so I am going to ask about increasing my afternoon dose of zofran. Someone suggested sugary foods, including peaches, and I JUST ate a peach and some pineapple! I am also really liking vinegar crisps - very strong flavour but for some reason I crave them. I'm hoping that this may as bad as it's going to get now that I am medicated. I have lost a few pounds and am trying to gain them back. It's really nice to not feel alone in this. Especially knowing that others struggle in the evening and at night as I do. I read your suggestions to my husband and before I got to the dietary suggestions he said "what about foods to eat? or herbs?" Ugh. He is super supportive and has been doing EVERYTHING around here, so I shouldn't complain, but I hate when people suggest I just eat more ginger lozenges or snack more - as if that is just going to fix everything. I'm sure you can all appreciate that too! Thanks again to everyone for the support!

byvelds11 · 03/06/2017 20:00

Oh I should add that my son goes to preschool 4 afternoons a week, but as this past week was half-term, he was home. I was desperate on Tuesday and posted on a local FB group for a mother's helper. She came on Wednesday to meet us and was amazing. She has come every morning this past week and will come every morning next week until we fly to Canada on Friday. It's nice to get that break.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/06/2017 20:16

Mustang27 · 03/06/2017 21:36

Byvelds snap on the second there is a few of us I think.

Also on ondansetron and my pattern of sickness is very similar to yours and others I'm 12 weeks. I take a cyclizine in the evening but I seem to be rejecting them now. Have you got something to combat the likely constipation that Zofran/ondansetron will cause as that really does make everything so much worse.

Who was it that said their breakfast came up 10hrs later??? I'm the exact same it's like my body point blank refuses to digest some things and the come back barely digested hours later it's awful. Iv decided that I'm just going to stick to nibbling toast the next few days as I just can't cope with all the vomiting. I know it would be 100 times worse without the meds but it's just not getting better. I was hoping I'd start to feel a little different by now.

mrsb87 · 03/06/2017 21:37

So I ended up in gynae for rehydration today. Ahhhh that wonderful feeling didn't last long. The nausea is back tonight :-( feeling really quite down about it all.

Mustang27 · 03/06/2017 21:57

I was the same mrsb about 2hrs and I was back to normal Sad. Are you getting enough support at home?

Mustang27 · 03/06/2017 21:58

Oh by normal I mean a nauseas vomiting crazy woman
