Blood test hcg less than 1 but still getting bfps!

Hi all, I'm looking for some advice, I got a bfp two weeks ago and signs of pregnancy, kept testing for two weeks with pink dyes, all bfp, some faint some darker but definitely there, I showed my bf and he could see them too, had a scan where they saw nothing but said it was probably too early, then I had a blood test to measure for hcg and it came back as less than one, so I assumed I'd had a very early miscarriage or a chemical, however I still had symptoms and I had some tests left, they are all positive! With a blood level of less than one there's no way an hpt would come back positive, so what the heck is going on?! Could the blood test have been wrong, or maybe there's something wrong with me healthwise? Has any else had a similar experience?

Have you got pictures of the tests? Which tests are you using? Have you bled yet?

Sunnyshores · 06/05/2017 20:00

Can you have another blood test HCG reading? Thats the only way to be sure.

Twinklestarr79 · 06/05/2017 20:02

Hi, I've used superdrug early tests and Lloyd's pharmacy own make, had a couple of bfps on clearblues as well but stopped using them as I heard they were unreliable, I'll take a couple of pics

Don't know why they look fainter when I upload them, they're as clear as day in real life, no squinting or holding up to the light or similar nonsense

I don't want to worry you unnecessarily but that can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy and can be dangerous. I suggest you get a scan asap to check. I would say go to your GP but given its the weekend you might want to call 111 to get some NHS advice from someone who knows better than me.

sallywiththegoodhurr · 06/05/2017 20:30

I've been having tests like that with Asda tests but they are BFN's in my case (indent lines coming up with in the time). I can't see anything on the lloyds test, sorry.

Obviously they look clearer in person so if you are confident they are BFPs then you need to get your levels rechecked. Hope all is okay!

NoOneLikesACrispyTowel · 06/05/2017 20:31

Superdrug give out false positives like crazy.

StripeyMonkey1 · 06/05/2017 20:31

Ok dodgy tests not a worrying sign! Just low persistent hcg.

Twinklestarr79 · 06/05/2017 20:41

So would an ectopic pregnancy not show up in a blood test? I have been having some pain on and off in my left side, and tbh my whole womb area feels very sore even just touch my lower tummy is painful

OP posts:
Twinklestarr79 · 06/05/2017 20:46

The consultant I saw said false positives with colour are rare and that I would definitely not get two weeks of them, so she says I had definitely been pregnant but had a miscarriage or chemical, I know you can still get positives after a miscarriage for a while but not with such a low hcg level as the level in your urine is even lower than the level in your blood. I believe her as she's a professional, I've seen her before with miscarriages in the past and she's very good. I've shown all the tests to my bf and he can see them no trouble. So I'm really confused 😕

Blood test is so much more reliable than pee test. I really cannot see the test lines in the ones you've uploaded. It won't be an ectopic as your blood hcg will be high but not rise / not really drop.

StripeyMonkey1 · 06/05/2017 21:10

Yep, blood tests are much more reliable and accurate than the ones you get in the shops.

If you are concerned it might be worth just double checking with your GP.

haveacupoftea · 06/05/2017 21:37

I don't really think those tests are positive, I think they're evap lines. You can get pink ones no matter what people say, I've seen them with my own eyes. If you take a FRER and get a visible pink line within 5 minutes, or a positive on a digital, then yeah something would be up then. But as it is I really don't think you're pregnant.

biginjapan · 06/05/2017 21:49

They look neg to me too - especially as they have been taken out of the casing. I think everyone has some free beta hcg in their blood at all times, no? In which case 1 would be fine and normal.

Jazzywazzydodah · 06/05/2017 21:54

Go back to your GP ASAP.

I've had two eptopics - one was a rupture. Both presented with pain on the side, the rupture I ignored till it was too late. I nearly died with my rupture.

Be careful

Thissameearth · 06/05/2017 22:20

I think it's unlikely to be anything of concern, but you are concerned so it's worth calling back to say you're still getting positive tests (I can't see any lines but it's just photos and you can in real life). In my experience, the EPU scanned me and as suspected MC they wanted to see that hcg was decreasing by a high enough percentage to ensure it's not ectopic. Apparently Ectopic can be very odd and can stay steady i.e. Not increase as per developing preg or decrease as per miscarriage. So they take bloods 48 hours apart and check the %decrease. Mine's didn't go down quickly enough in first 48 hours so had to go back 48 hours again and I think my hcg was down to 72 by day 5 so they were content I didn't need to come back again for further ectopic check. if you're HCG is as low as 1 (which I Think is normal non-pregnant Level?) then I guess they thought it cannot be a pregnancy (thus cannot be an ectopic pregnancy) which is prob why they didn't check your bloods again? no point worrying - call them tomorrow and mention tests plus pain? Sorry you've had a MC it's rubbish and the lingering uncertainty here doesn't help matters. 1 MC is "medically irrelevant" and doesn't imply it'll happen again. Some evidence even suggests it increases your fertility in following few months? I got pregnant month after this happened to me and fingers crossed is developing ok at around 4 months.

Twinklestarr79 · 06/05/2017 22:22

They really haven't shown up on the pics at all, they are definitely there, as I said I double checked with my bf in case I was having line eye or something, they are very clear and pink in real life, came up well within the development time, I only took them out of the casing when I took pics to get a better view. I even took them to the consultant appointment and she said they look positive. I started bleeding bright red blood about an hour ago, it's pouring out, I'm soaking through pads, sorry if it's tmi. Can't get to a and e tonight as I've got no transport and it's 30 miles away.

Twinkle
Please call nhs24 if you can at all for some advice. It sounds like someone with medical knowledge may need to speak to you to assess amount of blood and pain etc. Here to hold a hand. I have had two miscarriages and they were at home, it's scary but it kind of was more in waves/ gushes then what you are describing. I sat on the loo for most of it. There is a thread on the miscarriages board that deals with the practicalities of a miscarriage, I found it very helpful to me.

Twinklestarr79 · 06/05/2017 22:29

Thanks for your kind reply. I've had many miscarriages over the years, I have two kids by some miracle but even then throughout the pregnancies I was in and out of hospital with bleeding and contractions, my body just isn't set up for pregnancy, I have a soft tissue disorder which makes it really difficult to hold onto a pregnancy. However I'm really thankful for the children I do have, it's just I'm with a different partner now and he really wants a child of his own, I feel bad that I might not be unable to give him that.
