Brown discharge 16 weeks

Hey.
Looking for some advise / reassurance.

I had some brown discharge today. Tinged in the morning then had brown clumps by 2pm luckily my local hospital were fantastic and scanned me by 5pm baby was fine. She had a real look around placenta looks fine, strong heartbeat. Discharge seemed to stop now I'm home it's 8.30 and it's starting again and I have cramps feel like period is coming.
Is this bad? I am so upset and scared. Surely you would bleed if the baby had passed away not before the baby passes away? I had a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks.
I really thought we were out of the danger zone now I can't relax and enjoy this pregnant. I keep knicker checking and so scared then blood is going to go red ☹️.
Any advice or help would be amazing xxx

Could you have an infection?

I had thrush and bacterial vaginitis (sp) and ended up with brown discharge.

If you haven't been swabbed I'd request one.

Natalie2900 · 04/05/2017 20:40

I don't have any signs of thrush. But I've heard you can still have it. I think I need to have my cervix examined and a swab done. I've had BV before and it's deffo not that. My tummy is cramping so bad! I'm scared to go to bed incase I wake up in the morning with red blood!

I had brown discharge/blood at 14 weeks for no obvious reason and baby is absolutely fine (now 28 weeks). It continued for 2 weeks and when it intially started I had really bad back ache and cramps. There was also dark clots.

If it's brown blood/discharge then it's old blood and rarely anything to worry about. I went to hospital when it first started and midwife found heartbeat, checked cervix and did a swab (no scan).

I'm sure all is fine - especially if you've just had a scan. Best of luck!!

Natalie2900 · 04/05/2017 22:10

It's the cramping and spotting combination that's scary. It's not stopping everytime I wipe it's there. So scared I'm going to wake up with red blood :-(. Just worried baby is fine and it's my body not copying. Maybe my cervix is damaged?
Not a good day :-(

If there's anything up with your cervix there is stuff they can do. I've recently had a stitch put in.

Can you try and get an appointment today with a midwife or even someone who can refer you to maternity services or EPU like urgent care?

The cramps and brown spotting is similar to what I have and that is definitely BV but I had no other symptoms no smell (sorry bit TMI!) or anything like that.

How many weeks are you?

Natalie2900 · 05/05/2017 12:22

It stops and then starts. It's like very small clumps of brown blood. Hasn't been red yet! Gp says they may need to take a swab and carefully check cervix. Heard baby on doppler this morning ( I know midwife Hates me having one) but it really helps with my anxiety.
Midwife has been abit rubbish really
She's almost basically said they you will probably lose the baby! Every other forum regarding this people have said it's ok its quite normal.
I'm 16 weeks xxx

Sorry I noticed the weeks in your title after I posted Blush I'll blame baby brain.

The midwife should not be saying that! I think your previous miscarriage is going to make you worry more it's only natural. Second trimester losses aren't common and I agree that brown spotting and a bit cramping can just normal pregnancy stuff.

Can you ask for a new midwife?

Natalie2900 · 05/05/2017 13:35

I've just changed midwives because I work Mondays and my old midwife worked Mondays. 🙈Was proving difficult taking time off.
Haven't met her yet though.
I have another scan tomorrow I've booked private for gender scan. Although I know baby is fine at the moment I'm worried something is going wrong.
No idea where this brown blood is coming from as the scan yesterday showed absolutely no blood inside my womb! Hopefully
Doctor will do an internal examination today and work out what's going on and it's not affecting my happy little baby.

Fingers crossed it's "just" something small and easy treated. Easier said then done but try not to let it stress you out.

I had an early wellbeing scan at 17 weeks the 4D bit was amazing. Wasn't overly bothered on the gender (this is my 5th pregnancy) but couldn't help finding out as he played with his willy the entire way through Grin

Wombletor · 05/05/2017 17:08

Hi Natalie
I am experiencing brown discharge at the moment after I had a bleed on Monday. I am 10+3 and expected the worst but the scan confirmed all was well and there was no explanation of where it came from. The consultant examined my cervix too and it wax normal. It is very disconcerting. I hope all is well with you today after you've seen the Dr.

UnbornMortificado · 05/05/2017 17:23

FWIW my first pregnancy with DD1 i bled on and off for the first 25 weeks (didn't even realise I was pregnant) she was born naturally at 40+6 and is now 11 and a gobshite completely fine.

I've heard loads of similar stories on here over the years, I think bleeding affects 1 in 10 pregnancies.

Natalie2900 · 05/05/2017 17:24

Could it be part of my mucus plug?? As it's always clumps of brown mucus never blood. Just waiting to see if a doctor can examine me today :-( trying to concentrate at work all day as been hell

Gobshite bit made me laugh! It's the cramps that are worrying me! I hear aslong as you have no pain it's ok but I have period like cramps. I have a gender scan tomorrow so worried it'll be bad news when I get there. My bump has literally just popped out aswell 😔

Just read through your post. I'm so sorry you're going through this. I can't offer any advice as I have not experienced it myself. Hope you're ok, let us know how you get on. Thinking of you. I'm sure baby is absolutely fine though. Like one poster said, brown blood is old blood so wouldn't worry, when it's red is when you have to be a little more concerned. Good luck sweetie, enjoy your scan! X

Haha! That's ok that's really helpful. Mine is like that but with brown clumps in it. I just wish I could fast forward 5 months and know everything will be ok. Doctor can't do anything til Monday. She thinks infection. I've had BV and thrush before and this is nothing like it but if it was that I'd be happy! Never thought I'd say that!!

I had a bright red bleed at 11 weeks and then brown spotting with clots for two weeks from 14-16 weeks. I had some mild cramping which I think were stretching pains (milder than my period cramps but I get them BAD)

Had my cervix checked and a scan at 16 weeks and had cervical etropiom which was rhe likely cause of ths bleeding. Stopped a couple of days later and fine since. All good on 20 week scan and now 25 weeks

Fingers crossed all is OK for you OP. Must be scary having had a MMC before as it was pretty scary for me having never experienced that

UnbornMortificado · 05/05/2017 18:05

Natalie I had none of the usual symptoms didn't even realise I had thrush and normally it bugs the life out of me.

UnbornMortificado · 06/05/2017 14:07

Natalie any improvement today?

Natalie2900 · 07/05/2017 07:55

Well.. I had my scan yesterday and ITS A BOY!! My fiancée is over the moon. Although he didn't mind I think all men want a boy. ( we have a 5 year old girl already )
The brown blood has stopped .. touch wood!
And also all cramps. I am having a swab done tomorrow to rule out any infection. Hopefully this is the end of it.
All I can put it down to is too much sex ( hormones have turned me into a sex crazed animal lol) .. or when I have a 6 week scan there was small amount of blood inside. Midwife said it was normal just implantation bleeding but it never came it.. maybe that was it coming out.
Never any red blood so I'm hoping it was a one off! Xxx

I had a lot of this during my pregnancy. Having had miscarriages in the past I was concerned but none of my miscarriages started that way for me it was bright red bleeding instantly.

My dd is a year old this month. Please don't worry but also always get it checked out otherwise you'll drive yourself crazy. I wish you the very best x

UnbornMortificado · 07/05/2017 15:23

Nat congratulations. I think my DH was secretly glad we are having a boy (he has two stepdaughters)

Really pleased to hear the discharge has eased off Flowers

It's very easy to panic especially with past loss.

Justmadeperfectflapjacks · 07/05/2017 15:27

So lovely to catch up on a thread and it's good news!! Flowers .
Congratulations on a boy!!

user1493586126 · 07/05/2017 15:48

Could it be a cervical ectropion? It's harmless just where some extra cells grow on the cervix and cause some bleeding due to hormones..i believe it's pretty common

UnbornMortificado · 07/05/2017 16:05

Justmade I love a happy update and nice news too.
