Does the MAP really work?

I've never had to take it before. But me & dh fell out earlier & have made up in the nicest way But when we got up he said "Oh shit, where's the condom?" It was up inside me & he had to fish it out & [sob]

I am Catholic & before when we've had accidents I've just let it ride & see what happens as I've never really cared. But I am in the middle of a degree at the minute, I don't want a baby.

So, do I take the MAP? just incase [I am ovulating also so double freaked here] Where would I get it, can I get it over the counter at a chemist? Would I be embarrassed asking for it only to be told they don't do it? Do I call the doc & get a prescription for one or do I need to see the doctor to get it. Think my FPC is on tomorrow morning when I am in Uni so won't be able to go there. How long do I have, as fpc is open on Tuesday morning.. is that too long?

Sorry for the rambling post. Wish I had changed my name for this, but I feel sick already.

Has no-one ever taken one before?

i think you've got 72 hours but the sooner the better. i've had it from boots, it is a bit expensive, free as contraceptive if you get a prescription. call gp surgery in morning and ask them.

SparklyGothKat · 11/03/2007 21:16

you have 72 hours but the earlier you take it the better it works. You can get it in tesco if they have a chemist.

lulumama · 11/03/2007 21:17

get it ASAP , find an all night chemist if you can ,and if not, then first thing tomorrow morning....

fireflyfairy2 · 11/03/2007 21:18

No, my Tesco doesn't have a chemist. I can go to boots after Uni, about 3pm.

I can call my doc in morn & get a prescription I think, though can the receptionist order you a script or would I have to talk to doc?

OP posts:
fireflyfairy2 · 11/03/2007 21:18

Aw lulu, there's no all night chemists here, I am in the back of beyond.

you have to have check-up, with a questionaire before they will give you iy.

JoAndTheBoys · 11/03/2007 21:20

I took it a while ago when dh and I got 'carried away' and I was ovulating too...

Ds2 is now 3.5! And very lovely!

I think the effectiveness has gone up since then as it's a new type they give you... good luck!

SparklyGothKat · 11/03/2007 21:21

tuesday morning with the FPC should be ok, if you can make it there, and it will be free from them

lulumama · 11/03/2007 21:21

can you miss uni? the earlier it is taken , the better !

fireflyfairy2 · 11/03/2007 21:26

No, I can't really miss Uni, we are doing important practical stuff tomorrow. The course is very very important to me, that's why I don't want a baby

Oh God, how could I have been so fucking stupid.

I can get on Tuesday morning no problems, but I will most likely try & get to a chemist in the morning. Will I have to fill in a questionnaire in a chemist?

I might email the tutor & say I will be a bit late.

SparklyGothKat · 11/03/2007 21:27

yes they will take you into a room and ask some questions, like when was your LMP and how long ago you did the deal etc. Doesn't take long.

lulumama · 11/03/2007 21:28

are you sure you are ovulating ?

don;t panic, even if you are, there is still about a 1 in 4 chance of getting pregnant, and a 3 / 4 chance you won;t

fireflyfairy2 · 11/03/2007 21:32

Quite sure I am ovulating. My last period began on the 20th/21st Feb.

I am the most fertile person you could hope to meet [I have 7 sibling who all have big families] My mum is one of 10 & my dad one of 12..... enough said????

We were trying for dd for two months before I got pg, but that was because I didn't know about ovulation & stuff & had no way of finding out. Got pg with ds almost right away.

If I go to chemist at 9am I might only be a few mins late for the lecture.

Thanks for trying to make me feel better.. dh is no help at all!! Keeps sniggering like a bloody school boy!

I sort of have changed my mind a bit....

Ds got out of bed.. I can't imagine being without him.. I believe in fate. I was shit scared earlier & now is a really bad time, but would it be really really bad to let fate decide?

Dh wants me to get the MAP, but I know I can talk to him, he's a good fella, but it's the Uni thing at the minute that's bothering us. And as you say lulu, 3/4 chance I'm not pregnant anyway

OP posts:
lulumama · 11/03/2007 22:24

ooooooh........

eeeeek!!

erm

fate or not! only you and DH can decide!

Sparkler1 · 11/03/2007 22:30

Same thing happened to DH and I back in summer. Although we had decided that we weren't having any more children we said we would hold off MAP and see what nature intended for us. I was so nervous waiting for AF to come.
Fortunately, I wasn't PG and the emotions I felt were quite weird. I felt a little disappointed that I wasn't expecting but know now that I am happy with the two dds that I have already.
Hope it works out ok for you in the end. xx

I called at the chemist this morning to ask advice. She said she couls sell me the MAP for £24. I just had £20 in my pocket at the time & my purse was at home, so that decision was made for me already.

I have been thinking. I get really bad pregnancies & have been in hosp with hyperemisis on a couple of occasions when pg with ds. But now I have 2 children, I don't know if I can/want to spend up to a month in hospital on a drip. I also have a holiday booked for July & if I am pg, chances are I will be really sick, as last 2 pregnancies. I have the 2 kids to think of too.

I think I will call, speak to my own doc, & get the pill "just in case" Dh & I really need to talk this evening too. I just hate the thought of taking the MAP if I am already pg..even though it was just last night... KWIM?

Damn, when does the guilt stop????

Thanks for listening. Am posting from Uni so had better dash... & look busy. I will be home in about an hour anyway & will call the doc from home

Well, I've taken it.

The lecturer let us go early & I took it as a sign. My fpc was just open til 1.45 & I had to drive past it on way home.

It's for the best. Now I just have to convince myself.

fannyannie · 12/03/2007 13:20

Good luck - hope it works out with ever way you want it too.

I know what you mean about taking the MAP - I felt the same when I took it about 6 months ago.

fireflyfairy2 · 12/03/2007 13:29

I had thought they would give me the pill, I would be able to come home, think a bit more about it, & then if I decided to, take it then. But she said I had to take it there in front of her. We also had a chat about contraception. She recommends the mirena coil. Might start a thread asking about it. But I have to say, none of them appeal to me in a great way.

I didn't go to the chemist for mine - got an emergency appointment with the Nurse at the Dr.s surgery and said "HELP" - at least that way it was free LOL - and because I then had to pick up the precription from the chemist was able to take it in the privacy of my own home.
