I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Flossy - listen to your GP and get yourself to the hospital - does your hospital run a Hyperemesis clinic that you can go to? The vicious circle is so horrible - I have cried leaving hospital scared to go back to the HG abyss. But they will give you medication, which is what you need if the GP isn't willing. You have done it before, you can do it again xx

mrsb87 · 18/05/2017 17:13

At least your gp was on the ball with your dehydration issue. The sooner you can get it under control, the better. Hopefully the hospital will get you something better x

Mustang27 · 18/05/2017 17:17

Your body needs the drip to help get you ba little better. Just make sure you don't leave without the medication. Tell them you aren't functioning and this is how your pregnancies have been before you know the drill so there is no way you are starting from square one again. I do think the hospitals tend to better with this stuff though

mrsb87 · 18/05/2017 17:29

I totally agree with Mustang, the hospital will have a lot more experience dealing with this than a gp. GP's always tend to err on the side of caution.

flossyfloss · 18/05/2017 19:47

Thanks everyone, I'm currently hooked up to a drip in the early pregnancy unit, I've had ondansetron injected in the cannula and fluids being pumped in, they said they may keep me in but will assess in an hour.

I hope this works and I feel better. She said if they send me home it will be with ondansetron!

I'm so hungry and thirsty Confused

flossy hope you are able to go home soon, hopefully feeling much much better and with a good supply of medicine to keep you that way!

Mustang27 · 18/05/2017 20:27

Hugs flossy so glad you went and are getting a little tlc. Glad they are giving you the meds you need. Don't rush home let them decide if you need the extra looking after tonight at least.

satsoooma · 18/05/2017 21:17

Glad to hear you are getting help flossy. Take advantage of having the experts on hand. If you can, eat and drink while you have the good IV drugs. Also ask any meds questions you have when the doctor comes to discharge you.

Hopefully they will discharge you with the good stuff. Ask of they can put a note to your GP of what they should try next if you are still I'll in a few days/a week. It will help bypass any unhelpful GPS if you can point to a higher authority.

Hope you feel better soon.

flossyfloss · 18/05/2017 22:06

That's great advice thanks!

I'm staying in tonight - I've had tea and toast and I feel completely amazing!! That ondansetron is good stuff!Smile

I almost feel back to normal! The nurse said they will send me home with ondansetron and maybe something else to alternate. Also the ondansetron hasn't made me drowsy!

Please tell me that it will have the same effect when I take it orally?!?

Should I ask about something for constipation?

satsoooma · 18/05/2017 22:13

Nice! It is good stuff. I think some of the relief comes from the iv fluids too though. The oral meds are pretty amazing, but not quite as great as iv.

Definitely ask for something for the constipation. You don't want a stool softener, you want something to one things along - I think that means a laxative? I use bisacodyl, but see what they suggest.

Mustang27 · 18/05/2017 22:26

Really satsooma??? My dr prescribed me lactulose this is my second full day of ondansetron should I be worried this won't work. I have dulcolax here that I can use if need be.

I'm not constipated iv actually had quite an upset stomach today has it ever done that to anyone else?

flossyfloss · 18/05/2017 22:32

Thanks satsooma

Apparently a side effect of ondansetron can be diarrhoea? Also headaches which I do have now but give a headache over sickness any day Grin

I don't want to go home Sad I feel too well! I'm terrified of a downward spiral!!

Lemondrop99 · 18/05/2017 23:43

Glad your getting some help flossy. I hope the ondansetron helps in the long term. Do ask about constipation control, it's very common

Mustang, lactulose will help if you're constipated due to hard stools. However I need a stimulant (dulcolax) because my bowels stopped pushing. They do different things.

I threw up again today. Seems my vomit free streak is well and truly over 🙄

satsoooma · 19/05/2017 05:32

Mustang I guess just try lactulose and if you still can't go at all, try the ducolax. Lactulose is safer in pregnancy , but did absolutely nothing for me personally. The issue with laxatives is that they contract your digestive system. Supposedly there is a small risk that your uterus can contract too. Although I think that is only a problem in the third trimester.

Lemondrop99 · 19/05/2017 08:25

Satsooma, I researched pretty hard online and could only find reference that the risk of uterus contractions in relation to senna in the third trimester. I couldn't find anything to confirm either way with Dulcolax, but felt a bit better that there was no obvious evidence of it.

Ergh, had bloody horrific baby related dreams again last night. I keep having these horrible vivid dreams, I'm fed up of it.

Feeling so nauseous today. I don't know whether to because I tried to cut down on the medication or whether this is just a bad few days (it comes and goes now). So annoying when I thought it was turning a point.

BeautifulLiar · 19/05/2017 08:30

Oh flossy :( glad you're feeling better. I can totally relate to the guilt re other children. I am such a shit parent atm. But we are giving them another sibling and they'll probably never remember this x

LucindaE · 19/05/2017 08:32

I was out yesterday, so missed flossyfloss's admission. Sorry about that. I am so glad you've got fluids and they are giving you meds with which to go home. Sorry about the headache. How bad is it? Probably if you've got an appetite not really bad? Only a couple of people on here have had them so badly they had to go off Ondansetron.
Good advice from everyone urging you that if the dr was concerned about the level of dehydration, then you must indeed go in. A couple of women on here who put it off too long have been taken with flashing lights by ambulance to emergency.

Lemondrop Oh no, poor you about returned vomiting. How many weeks are you? Could it be one of the dreaded hormonal surges?
OnNature'sCourse That sounds awful about the re-organisation at work. The last thing you need. I do hope they sort something out.
satsooma and mustang. That is a point about the foul taste of anti sickness meds and Gaviscon. I had to laugh about 'dirty sea water'.

I also found lactulose did nothing for me, so it really depends on whether the ondansetron causes hard stools, or just no movement. I am in the 3rd trimester and treated mine, admittedly extreme case, with bisacodyl suppositories. My baby is doing fine so far.

Glad to hear you are getting some well needed rest Flossy. For most the first trimester seems to be the worst. I hope you find a combo of meds that work for you.

Lemon, sorry the vomming is returning, that sucks. How is the nausea? I am not everyday anymore, seems to be like every other day. I even had a green sticker on my wall chart yesterday which means the nausea wasnt too bad either! Nice to see it in a sea of red ones lately...

I'm off to Kings this morning for an extra scan to check the weight of my LO. Hoping he is average so I have more evidence to challenge the diagnosis.

Waves to all, hope you manage to have goodish days.

flossyfloss · 19/05/2017 08:43

I think they're going to send me home today- I'm just so scared of feeling rubbish again, I feel so much better with the iv in.

My hands and legs have swollen Confused nurse thinks it's due to all the fluid I've had pumped in a short space of time.

They want to check on my ketones. All I've been given is toast since I've been here - toast just isn't cutting it Confused I'm ravenous!!! X

Oklahoma · 19/05/2017 08:43

Flossy I have found that on the whole the lactulose keeps things under control with the very occasional bisacodyl suppository to get things moving. The lactulose keeps things soft and he bisacodyl makes your body push them out so you definitely need the lactulose you just may need the bisacodyl as well.

We're moving house today and I have been awake since 3am worrying (which is clearly going to help heaps with the HG today!). Luckily I won't have to do anything, we have movers and parents helping but still it's going to be tough!

Sympathy and strength to everyone else.

flossyfloss · 19/05/2017 08:52

Thanks Oklahoma! And good luck with the move, I've moved house so many times and my top tip is first thing to do once everything is into the new house is build beds and sofa, last thing you want to do at bedtime after moving is wait for a bed to be built Confused x

Mustang27 · 19/05/2017 10:00

Yep I agree with flossy beds, sofa & kettle although I'm pretty sure none of us is really managing a brew at the moment. Which is bloody depressing.

satsoooma · 19/05/2017 10:16

oh yeah mustang. Tea and chocolate were the first things I went off. The two things that used to cheer me up.

flossyfloss · 19/05/2017 10:31

Very weirdly tea seems to be the only drink I can stomach at the moment ?! Usually I go off it!
