I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi all, welcome MrsB - second pregnancy here too, congratulations, and hoping you're not poorly this time around!

Holly, so sorry to hear you're in hospital, I know it's absolutely no help at all, but I'm hoping things get better for you soon.

Same old here, good days and bad days. But 12 week scan showed a teeny tiny little baby wriggling away which has helped me to de-stress!

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 08/05/2017 12:30

Hi Holly I hope you are doing ok, what a horrible ordeal.

I shall be forever thankful that my GP foresaw issues and prescribed the stings preemptively to treat constipation.

Perhaps you could give steroids a go now for sickness if ondansetron a no go?
I take them for flare ups of Crohn's disease, but understand they are good for sickness too? X

IAmSeriousAndDontCallMeShirley · 08/05/2017 12:31

Just saw that Lemon has already suggested steroids- sorry lemon! Xx

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/05/2017 12:56

Welcome mrs b nutter congrats doing it again :)

I am so glad I don't /didn't need rubber gloves 😱😱😱

Assume you've truer lactulose ?

Lemondrop09 · 08/05/2017 13:02

Blondes - Problem with Laculose is it's only softener. That isnt my issue. My guts aren't pushing, so soft or not, it all just sits there. The GP has just given me a stimulant laxitive but I feel uncomfortable taking it as I heard it can make the uterus contract. but I feel better just having the pills here, if I do need them.

Your GP sounds excellent Shirley. Odansetron baffles most GPs and it's a fight to get it, let alone a dr who knows who to counteract tge side effects! You are lucky.

Welcome MrsB. I hope you're sickness stays well away this time. As I always say, salute of respect to anyone doing this more than once. I can't imagine being able to face this again!

Lemondrop09 · 08/05/2017 13:05

Great news about the scan pippa! It's so lovely to see isn't it. Mine cheered me up for days. I've got my anomaly scan in a few weeks which I'm both looking forward to a dreading in equal measures.

LucindaE · 08/05/2017 14:01

mrsb87 Welcome. I do hope you escape it this time. As you are a veteran I don't need to say my usual 'have you got kesostix' and recommending sips of flat coke, ice lollies, the juice and fruit of tinned peaches and pears. soda water, etc etc.
Hollyhop I am just hoping it all moves soon! Certainly, I have never heard of such a severe reaction in seven years on this thread. Glad baby is active.
putputput and Lemondrop Lots of people have to do that on here...
Lemondrop Good idea about Hollyhop and steroids.
IAmSerious I think predictive text made that post speak of 'the stings' your doctor prescribed pre-emptively along with Ondansetron?
Pippanippa Happy news about the scan.
I hope everyone is coping today.

MrsB Oklette was born October 2014 too. I knew I recognised the name (but didn't want to be that weirdo if I was wrong) sorry that you're back with us...

Ondansetron isn't all bad. I take a lot of it and the lactulose keeps things in check nicely most of the time. I definitely wouldn't write it off just because of the potential constipation side effect.

But no there is no magic bullet for HG.

Holly my thoughts are with you

mrsb87 · 08/05/2017 15:26

Crazy thing is I was EXACTLY the same as you guys 1st time round! I have no idea what changed, but the hope is that if it does happen again, I'm more aware as are my doctors!
Thanks Lucinda, yes I remember all the fab advice you gave me then!

OnNaturesCourse · 08/05/2017 15:33

Can I join 😒

Signed off today. Sick line states HP and UTI.

Pregnancy is joyous!

Mustang27 · 08/05/2017 16:02

Hi in onnatures!! Think I might have a Uti got one about 8 or 9 weeks in last time. Just getting a sneaky feeling oh and some obvious symptoms umm not just crazy lol. The weird thing is I never get them any other time. Why does pregnancy make you more susceptible?

OnNaturesCourse · 08/05/2017 16:15

I'm majorly prone to them. Pregnancy actually cleared them for 11 weeks... And now... Wham !

Hollyhop17 · 08/05/2017 17:47

Evening all, I have finally escaped. Been sent home with a massive list of meds to keep taking. Things are moving incredibly slowly, but moving which I suppose is something.

Thanks for the steriods tip. I havent been sick since Tuesday last week and havent taken an ondansetron since Sat evening, dare I hope I'm actuallly getting better anyway and can make do with promethazine? The nausea has been quite bad today, but it wasnt too bad yesterday. Though my theory is the pain blocked everything else.

Sorry to the new people having to join us, especially those on their second HG pregnancies, what brave women you are.

Thanks for being a supportive bunch. I am cutting out carbs until the end, which has basically been my diet thus far, any tips on what to eat instead? They werent too helpful at the hospital...

Melleebacca · 08/05/2017 19:55

Holly - glad to hear things are starting to move. Ondansetron works by closing the valves, hence making it difficult to puke and also causing constipation. Hopefully your sickness has waned enough for you to be able to survive without ondansetron.
Food wise, um, how's fruit for you? My diet is very carb based, I can eat porridge for breakfast which is also good for keeping things moving.

MrsB - welcome back. Round 2 here as well. Pre-emptive meds helped cut down the illness but still not much fun with a toddler.

Pippa - lovely news about the scan.

Had lots more to say but tantruming toddler has made my brain go to mush.
I had my B12 shot yesterday and got a lecture about eating more red meat and leafy greens. I so would if I could. Also vomited for the first time in a few weeks, not sure if it was the B12 or the hormones.

Waves to all.

DevilWearsPrimark · 08/05/2017 20:38

Hello all!
Holly, glad to see you're out and it's starting to improve at least a little.
Its my first full week back at work this week and so far (after one day!) it's been ok, but I'm so tired!
I did go back to the docs last week though, and she tried to tell me to eat ginger biscuits and ginger tea- wasn't expecting that from a medical professional, should have known better from being in this thread.
Had a bit of a scare over the weekend (lots of bleeding on Friday night), so they booked me in for a scan for Sunday- first time I've seen the actual baby bouncing around in there, didn't realise they moved so much as this stage! Pippa, bit like you seeing them for the first time really helps to feel better.

LucindaE · 08/05/2017 20:44

Welcome to OnNature'sCourse. I believe Hperemesis is caused by hormonal imbalance, and those with a tendency to it or severe pregnancy sickness also are likely to suffer from PMT, menstrual migraine and UTI's - all the fun, in fact...Have you got kesostix? Some liquids/foods people find helpful are flat full sugar coke, soda water, tonic water, ice lollies, ice cubes, Dr Pepper, Lucoazade, the juice and fruit of tinned fruit, esp. peaches and pears, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps, cheap ice cream, slices of frozen melon, custard ah, and sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya)...
mrsb87 Welcome back and thanks for lovely words. Now you are a vetaran and must have many survival tips!
Hollyhop That certainly is enough to put anyone off Ondansetron for life. I am glad you have escaped from hospital. It's difficult to avoid carbohydrates - is that what they advised? Do they mean by that the bread and potatoes type? Maybe tinned peaches and their juice, frozen melon or cuppa soup? Can you stand custard or cheap ice cream?
Melleebacca Sorry to hear about vomit. That red meat and greens advice was singularly pointless - enough to make you Angry. People on here have had so many lectures about 'you shouldn't be living on crisps and coke really, you know...'( or whatever it is that you can stand)...
I hope everyone is OK-ish...

cheap ice cream?

DevilWearsPrimark Cross posted. Goodness, that bleeding must have been unnerving. I am glad all is OK.

Hi ladies

I posted last week as recently got my bfp and as this is baby number 5 I am dreading the return of HG Sad I also work full time.

I should know all this but to be honest I've just suffered along until my HG disappears at around 16/17 weeks. This time I want to be prepared. I was thinking of getting ritz crackers by the bed for when I wake up ? Flat coke and maybe lots of starchy things?

Any other ideas of what I can take to work to nibble on?

I have the gp on Thursday, if I et resistance should I demand preemptive meds or a referral to an OB?

Thanks!

Mustang27 · 08/05/2017 22:05

Flossyfloss I think you might be crazy, 5 times wow I'm so impressed. This is my second and will definitely be the last. I don't find the crackers help me and tonic water, specifically aldis is all im drinking at the mo.

Arghh mellee yeah cos you don't know that already, why do they think that is what you want to live on?!? I eat paleo/primal style diet until I'm pregnant then I can barely look at veg, meat, fruit actually l the foods lol.

Holly if you want to avoid carbs or at least processed ones try looking up paleo or primal as they are naturally low in carbs although I'm surprised they didn't tell you to eat pulses and beans to help with your bowel.

Mustang27 · 08/05/2017 22:08

Devil I'm sorry you got a scare but so glad baby and you are well. I love to see them wriggle I'm pretty sure they give you motion sickness with it all lol

DevilWearsPrimark · 08/05/2017 22:10

It was a bit worrying, I suppose feeling constantly nauseous had its benefits though, as I thought that might be a sign everything was ok- but then I couldn't work if I was sick because of nerves or because of pregnancy.
Hi flossy for work I take in digestive biscuits and ready salted crisps. Sometimes I have a cuppa soup, which I just dip the crisps in. I've noticed a fair few people on the thread have been prescribed preemptive meds, on This website it recommends getting to the docs early for some meds as a preventative measure- but others more experienced than me will be able to help better!

flossyfloss · 08/05/2017 22:14

Thanks I'll try digestives and ready salted crisps - I'd imagine they're not too bad to throw up!

I really hope I get an understanding doctor.

I have a prescription in my bag from last month from my gp for stemetil - I was feeling dizzy so it was prescribed for that. Could I try those? I'm sure I've been given them for HG before, does anyone know what dose?

Sunshineandlaughter · 08/05/2017 22:20

Just wanted to wish all you lovely ladies well. I've had two hg pregnancies - each the full 9 months of puking and the second baby worse than the first. It was hell on earth and put a massive strain on the whole family - I felt like the shortest mum never being able to spend time with my dc1 and having to stop on the way home from nursery with her to puke every day whilst she sat there patiencely. But it does end - as soon as I had the babies each time I felt immediately better and they are more than worth it Smile. Now to loose the masses of weight i put on as for me the only thing that stoped the nausea was eating and even puking to up x7 a day I put on weight!!
My husband is banning a 3rd dc because I get so sick. I do see his point but I'd gladly do it again although the impact on the other dc may stop me. I'm finding it really interesting seeing there were so many things that could have helped me but the gps never offered as they all seemed to think it was something I should just put up with.

Sunshineandlaughter · 08/05/2017 22:21

Shittest not shortest sorry! Blush

Sunshineandlaughter · 08/05/2017 22:22

Oh and the worst thing to throw up is definitely crumpets!!! They go so sponges!!
