Clothes size for a small baby

FeelingForSnow · 01/04/2017 19:18

Just that really. A quick question to those who had small babies around 5lb-6lb.
I'm expecting a small baby. I'm 33+2. Going for regular growth scans and the last one showed that her tummy has tailed off a little bit. She measures just under 10th centile and is 4lb5oz according to the scan.
I've got another scan next week. Dr will consider induction on or just after 36 weeks if the growth is still slow.
I have bought loads of baby clothes but most are 0-3 months and I reckon she might drown in those.
What size would I need for a baby this small? Tiny or premature?
Thanks for your replies?

All my babies were small and all overdue 6lbs, 5lbs 8oz, 6lbs 8oz and 5lbs 14oz and all wore tiny baby up to 5 and a half pounds for the first few weeks, newborn hung off them all

FeelingForSnow · 01/04/2017 21:26

Thank you so much for all the advice. I have completely forgotten how small babies are (DS and DD are both 12 and 11).
That will definitely help a lot. I know realise that I surely need to have another shopping to do.

I'm very glad I asked ;)

I had a lanky 6.11 baby and needed tiny baby vests for a good month. Babygros I had tiny baby with the feet cut off for a similar period (like I said, lanky) but could just get away with newborn. Newborn vests lasted forever for us to be fair - I did use extenders because she got longer rather than wider...

FlipperSkipper · 01/04/2017 21:41

My son was 5lb3 at birth and we had M&S tiny baby which go up to 6lb6. He then went into next first size, then into the bigger newborn stuff from the supermarkets. He's into up to 1 month now at 8 weeks old.

Teabagtits · 01/04/2017 21:45

Dd was 6lb2 and we had to get tiny baby clothes for her for the first few weeks.

iamapixiebutnotaniceone · 01/04/2017 21:48

Tesco do tiny baby clothes that are up to 5lb as part of their normal range so aren't overpriced. Next First size are actually smaller in my opinion, they are up to 7.8lbs but I found they fitted my 5.8lb baby quite well x

MrsNuckyThompson · 01/04/2017 21:49

Even most 'normal' sized babies don't fit 0-3 at first. I'd get some tiny baby and some 'newborn/ first size'.

AreWeThereYet000 · 02/04/2017 02:29

My baby was 5lb 13oz and he wore next and mothercare Tiny Baby, then moved onto first size, newborn, upto 1 month, 0-3 etc. The tiny baby were slightly too big but I didn't bother buying prem as they grow so quick and I just bought a few of each size he could re wear x

forgotpassword · 02/04/2017 03:14

My prem baby was born at 33wks was 5lbs 2oz when born. When he left hospital 2 weeks later he was 4lb 11oz he was in prem clothes for over a month. Then on to Mothercare tiny baby. So I would get some just in case. My friend got him lovely prem clothes from asda.

jinglebellmel · 02/04/2017 08:35

We got small/tiny baby for my son who was 5lb, it was a little big on him, but not drowning him big and didn't want to waste money buying the next size down too. Boots do some nice tiny baby things.

RainbowChasing · 02/04/2017 15:08

My dd was 7lb 5oz when born but was very short and the 0-3 months were huge on her. I bought her some stuff tiny baby sized and they were perfect for her for the best part of a month. If you're expecting a small baby then it wouldn't hurt to get tiny baby baby clothes.

BaffledMummy · 02/04/2017 15:10

Tiny baby size here for 6lbs 6 and they lasted a good 5- 6 weeks. Remember they can lose up to 10% of body weight after birth too! It's seemed an eternity till she fit into new born and was in 0-3 months until well over 5 months.

I've brought a few tiny baby outfits and some Prem outfits as I have a history of Prem babies. My thinking was at least if I manage to go to term I can donate them to the hospital rather than her coming early and having nothing iyswim. X

Neverknowing · 02/04/2017 15:16

Agree with PP about getting size0 or premature nappies they're difficult to find and would also say only buy a few because I don't know about your baby but my DD was born 5lb9 and at five months is now just over 15lb!! Babies grow fast!!
Also I found sainsburys Newborn to be the best for my small baby :) good luck!!

toptomatoes · 02/04/2017 15:23

DD was born unexpectedly at exactly 36 wks and was 5lb 8 oz. the newborn stuff was far too big but supermarket tiny baby stuff was ok.

toptomatoes · 02/04/2017 15:24

She uses the tiny baby stuff as dolly clothes now!

bobbis · 02/04/2017 15:30

I was induced at 37 weeks due to baby being below the 10th centile. DD was 5lb 6 and tiny baby clothes drowned her. She's now 3 weeks old, 6lb 9 and she's only just outgrowing them. In hindsight should have picked up some prem stuff even though it was for up to 5lb. Newborn and 0-3 look massive against her!
My DS was 8lb so I know how you feel!

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 02/04/2017 15:33

First baby was estimated 6.7, was 8.3
Second baby estimated 8lb, was 8.5
Third baby estimated over 10lb was 8.9
Fourth baby I haven't paid any attention to the estimate!

WankersHacksandThieves · 02/04/2017 15:38

I don't know anyone whose had a baby that fit into 0-3 on arrival!!

I had to cut the feet of some of those to fit DS1 in. he was 9lb 13 and 59 cm long!

These look lovely and good value OP

Had 2 tiny babies last was 19yrs ago i got baby vests and gros from boots 3-5lbs now even primark seel teeny baby clothes go for 5lbs but tyey do grow quite quickly so dont go nuts buying lots.

MrsJayy · 02/04/2017 15:44

God typos sorry.

FeelingForSnow · 02/04/2017 18:57

Again thank you so much for all your suggestions. I bought some sleep suits for tiny babies from JL and M&S. I might pick up as some suggested just a couple premature ones too.

Her thigh bone had measured very long though and she might be tall. My DP and I are both tall and both my children were tall.
All prem clothes might be too short then.

CatsCantFlyFast · 02/04/2017 19:20

I wouldn't worry too much about too short - at the 99th centile for length we didn't have an issue until she straightened up at about 4 weeks adjusted
