I have discovered that the key to not feeling horribly nauseous is eating pretty much constantly.

Today i have had:

2 pieces toast with marmite
Yogurt
Handful Ritz crackers
2 cheese crispy pancakes (which i thought would be nicer than they tasted)

Fancy quiche and jacket potato for tea. And some mint poppets. Hmm...poppets...

lots of things - esp. stawberries, cucumbers and gherkins dipped in dijon mustard...!

nh101 · 07/03/2007 19:10

I am really feeling for all you out there with m/s who can only eat junk. I do understand and sorry again for sounding condescending but the thought of eating that rubbish makes me gag and I think my lack of m/s is because of my good diet (but could be wrong of course). The only time I've felt unwell during this PG is when I was on holiday and ate junk all week. Couldn't wait to get back and eat healthy again!

MrsMar - make sure you are getting enough protein if you are not eating much meat. You need about 60g a day during PG. Cottage cheese is good and low fat!

Is there mercury in salmon (wild Atlantic) anyone?

CorrieDale · 07/03/2007 19:21

I think there may be - the key thing to remember is that fish that is near the top of the fishy food chain will have more mercury in it than the ones near the bottom. So big fish are more of a problem than tiddlers.

MrsMcJnr · 07/03/2007 19:50

MrsMar well done, you are doing really well with your weight. I?m trying to eat for health too but just feel you can?t be good all of the time

MrsMar · 07/03/2007 21:14

Hi NH, yeah, I'm trying to eat something like a low fat yoghurt each day, or some form of protein. My useless gp said that I didn't need any protein in my diet!! What an idiot!!

Thanks for support MrsMcJnr! I've got a really physically demanding job to go back to after maternity leave so I really can't be piling it on too much anyway. I'm going to have to get pretty fit, pretty fast!

bumperlicious · 07/03/2007 21:35

Nh101, firstly I had a v good diet before becoming pregnant and i still got awful morning sickness. I made DH drive around my town to find KFC one night because that was all I could face eating, I hate KFC and we didn't even know where it was.

Secondly, I and I am sure many of the people on here resent the implication that we bought on ms with our diet, making it our fault. All people and pregnancies are different and making generalisations like that based on your experience just serves to make us feel guilty and like we are bringing this on ourselves. It's not very supportive, especially when a lot of us are really struggling through pregnancy.

Sorry, I don't want to offend you and I wouldn't normally step into a debate like this, but I've just had enough this week of people being judgemental about me and my pregnancy. Can we just try and be more supportive of each other instead of judgemental? I'm sure the OP just wanted some empathy about how she was feeling, not a criticism.

DetentionGrrrl · 08/03/2007 09:10

nh101- yes i am under 12wks, yes i do usually eat very well, but i feel unwell and when i find something that doesn't make me want to vomit, i'm eating it. what do you suggest? that if i don't want something virtuous, i simply don't eat?

i am actually looking forward to the nausea passing so i can eat some fruit and veg again.

and i couldn't find any poppets

OK OK I honestly didn't mean to make you feel bad! Everyone is entitled to their opinion. A place like this is not a place where everyone agrees - how boring would that be!

Mrs Mar, try veg chilli for a really good source of protein -
1 can borlotti beans
1 can cannelini beans
red pepper
mushrooms
1tsp chilli powder
tin tomatoes
Even add a few red lentils for even more protein!
Just throw it all in a pan and cook for 10 mins.

And quinoa (like rice, from the health food shop) is a great source of protein.

Even broccoli and green beans are good!

(Eggs too)

Your baby is built from the protein in your diet so it is vital you get enough (and you have to eat it, it can't leech it from you)

Hope the scan went well today!!

nh101 · 08/03/2007 13:02

Also throw an onion in that chilli recipe (trying to remember it off top of head!)

zephyrcat · 08/03/2007 13:16

(The old wives thing worked for me!! With my dds I was terrible for sweet things and with ds everything was savoury!)

zephyrcat · 08/03/2007 13:17

I've been stuffing my face with feta stuffed olives, and ten bought somne feta cheese. Then discovered I'm not supposed to be eating feta cheese

honey2theb · 08/03/2007 13:22

Mrs mar, im practically veggie too. I make chilli like nh! its lovely! i also make spagetti bolognese in the same sort of way. I'm a big lover of quorn too. Try natural yoghurt mixed with curry powder ( wierd i know) and mix it with quorn. Its like coronation chicken stuff and its lovely in a baguette or on a jacket potato!
there are loads of meals you can make. I'll have a think of some for you!! I used to do slimming world so ive got loads of green recipes from there!
I know its so hard when your body just refuses to eat healthy things!! i have been lucky in that ive been eating fruit etc. and gone off pizza etc.

oooh i have gone on

MrsTom · 08/03/2007 13:31

Feta cheese is fine though - as long at it is pasturised?

I read somewhere that Feta bought in the UK is usually okay.

DetentionGrrrl · 08/03/2007 13:35

i've managed scrambled egg on toast AND orange juice today. Score! Protein and vitamin C!

i did almost vomit on a bus earlier though. all i could eat earlier was a handful of chocolate raisins- they did not sit well with me sadly. Blurgh!

i walked round the market earlier looking at fruit and veg, and nothing i looked at was appetising.

i must eat some veg today. I really must.

I'm glad i'm not the only one having trouble though!

Well done DG!! i must say scrambled egg - the thought is making me queasy!!
I had a cheese, tomato and cucumber roll for lunch! i did eat crisps, 2 tangerines, an apple and a chewy bar this morning though!! and i am living for lucozade

nh101 · 08/03/2007 14:54

Yes, Quorn is great for protein (10-15% protein)

Good quorn curry:
Put a chopped onion, some crushed garlic, some curry powder and a tin tomatoes in pan, simmer for 10 minutes. Then pour over quorn pieces, bake in the oven at 180C for 45 mins, then stir in a pot of fromage frais and bake for a further 10 mins. Lovely creamy curry!

mum2george · 08/03/2007 15:36

So far today I've had:

Two weetabix with full fat milk & sugar
Homemade Chocolate Chip Muffin
Toast with butter & a vanilla slice
Mango juice drink
and some grapes.

So its not been the most healthy of days!

Am thinking about having pasta with homemade veg sauce for tea but not sure.

mum2george · 08/03/2007 15:37

Forgot to mention the creme egg, have managed to wean myself down to one a day now though so feeling better about that!

MrsMar · 08/03/2007 18:03

Hi NH - i do occasionally eat quinoa, and I'm doing the whole pulses and legumes, but I'm such a meat lover, it's so hard not to eat it every day! Having a lovely stir fry tonight, with some lean chicken, skin off of course!

bumperlicious · 08/03/2007 22:22

Nh101, no worries, normally I'm the first to wax lyrical about healthy eating. Just feeling bad because I'm struggling to stick to a healthy diet during pregnancy.

nh101 · 09/03/2007 11:52

Well guys, I have to confess...

Last night I had a Mr Kipling almond slice!

Ha ha, I was up and down all day emotionally, my little sister went into labour on Wed night so I slept so badly worrying about her, then yesterday I was so tired, had a bad day at work, and with all the emotion of the birth (she gave birth at 4.30pm actually) I just couldn't stop crying. I went to see her (1hr 15min drive) straight from work which was great - the baby is adorable - and then drove 1hr 15mins home. Knackered - and then when I got in my DH hadn't made tea cos he'd forgotten what we were having (even though I told him loads the day before so he wouldn't forget ) So I had a go at him and he got in a strop and I cried loads again and then he went out to get cake to cheer himself up. I didn't even fancy one but with them sat in front of me I thought, well, it won't hurt

So no one's perfect, not even me

Piffle · 09/03/2007 11:53

sod all as everything gives me heartburn...

toadstool · 09/03/2007 15:24

Er, nh101... As your remarks and advice, though appreciated, have been quite aggressive, I must comment on your long excuse for daring to eat a small cake. Most of us don't go through agonies like this, PG or not PG. Have you ever had issues with food? Much MN sympathy if you have, it's not funny at all, but you perhaps should realise that depriving yourself of essential nutrients by forcing your body NOT to eat what it craves can be just as bad as gorging on what you so charmingly term cr*p. In this PG, I haven't had half the heatburn I had when I obediently ate tons of raw veg, so more milk and carbs are clearly working to keep body and soul happier. I know a woman who could only keep down waffles for the full 9 months. Her baby was absolutely fine.

Twiga · 09/03/2007 15:33

Won't list what I manage to get through some days atm but have gone from cravings for lemonade and chocolate to avacados and fishfinger sandwiches - not at the same time I might add. It's strange how both my pg's have been so diff, with dd I had horrendous ms (26 weeks worth) and heartburn, mostly craved healthy stuff so got through a tonne of salad and fresh fruit, that said there was the week I had macaroni cheese every day for tea just because. This time like I've already said not so healthy but no ms a such just horrible nauseaous feeling for first 13 weeks and heart burn only just developing and nowhere near as bad or as frequent.

Twiga · 09/03/2007 15:37

Thinking about it, it was just as well my cravings last time were for healthy non-cooked items because in order to eat anything I'd cooked without throwing up I had to bung it in the oven etc, close the kitchen door and then sit up-stairs in the bedroom (with door closed) til it was cooked so I didn't smell it. Was always ok once it was served up. The days dh was home in time to cook were a relief! I really think with all the things there can be to worry about as long as your diets resonable a bit of what you fancy/or doesn't make you feel sick can't do much harm.
