ANOTHER BABY NAME DILEMMA

loopyredangel · 04/03/2007 21:51

We have just found out we are pregnant with our second child!!!! I have a name for a boy - Jack, but for a girl I am totally stumped, I always liked the name Amber, but I have gone off it recently, and quite like the name Tilly, but my husband doesn't like it, he quite likes the name Mia or Maya, and Grace has popped up a few times, but there are so many Graces' around. We wanted something a bit different for a girl. What do you think? Personally I quite like Tilly!

Tilly is sweet, but it's a bit of a nickname, IMO - also it's nicer for a baby than a 30yo.

quietmouse · 04/03/2007 21:52

how about Matilda? (shortended to Tilly)

Tilly is very popular in some areas so don't hope too hard it'll be 'different'.
Like many of the 'cute' names about now it does worry me how it will sound when she chairs the board of directors / is called to the Bar / gets a knighthood...

jammydodger · 04/03/2007 21:55

what about Tilda? (like that actress). I know a baby called that and it really suits her, but she also gets called Tilly.

Bucketsofdynomite · 04/03/2007 21:57

Can you narrow down your criteria at all? Do you want it to mean something special/nice? Sound cute/pretty? Language origin? Literary connections?

loopyredangel · 04/03/2007 22:01

Mmmmmm, I see what you mean, Tilly is cute when they are little, but when they are older hmmm, doesn't quite have the same ring to it doesn't it! You wathc, we will be stressing ouver girls names and will probably have another boy! LOL

Something special and unique would be lovely, and maybe something she could shorten when she is older! Problem is we have an awkward surname - Oakley!

oh, I'll give you the benefit of our thoughts on names for girls - we were looking at quite mainstream / traditional names and the thread got a bit out of hand, but there might be some good ideas...
here it is

This is interesting - the 100 most popular names for the last five years: National Statistics baby names

I wanted to call my DD Merrily (from the Phil Rickman books) but DH wouldn't let me. I like positive optimistic names but also you can't go wrong with a literary name. My DD ended up Lyra from the Philip Pullman books.

How doyou pronounce Maya - is it May-a? Stupid question!

OP posts:
loopyredangel · 04/03/2007 22:53

JUst found out what Maya means and it's beautiful - divine creative force in everything hmm Maya-Grace Oakley has a ring to it!

OP posts:
nathaliea · 04/03/2007 23:12

i know, it also has a beautiful meaning. i've also been told it means 'treasure' and also 'oasis' in various languages.
it's prounounced my-a

loopyredangel · 04/03/2007 23:24

Sorry, only read the first couple of posts....

my parents decided to call me a name my gandma didn't like, so she anannnounced that she would call me Matilda. She called me Tilly till the day that she died.

When I had dd1, I wanted to call her Tilly in memory of my gran, and I liked the name, but Tilly - wansn;t sure. I cal;led her Natalie, which gets shortened to Tilly and we're all happy.

anyway, sorry to butt in. I'm sure you'll find the right name.

decafskinnylatte · 04/03/2007 23:32

I love Tilly too
and Tess
Maya Grace is lovely.
Hmmmmm - [warm & fuzzy emoticon]. DH would be horrified by the amount of time I spend lost in thought over names for the dc3 we haven't even agreed to have yet!

Flamesparrow · 04/03/2007 23:33

I like Tilly

PeachyClair · 04/03/2007 23:37

I love Tilly, I'd probably go for MAtilda and shorten it for home usage ythough to Tilly, just to give them the option of the power name if they want it. Also like Maya, and Grace- Maya-Grace is lovely!

I like Amber when its mixed with another name, its top of our list too (she would be Amber-Rose Peach)

lackofgravitas · 04/03/2007 23:40

squonk, how circular - my DD is Natalie, my grandmother wanted to shorten it to Tilly, but only lived until N was 15 months old, and they only met twice. My dad experimented with 'Tally', but it never caught on. I know full well nursery call her Nat, I neither approve nor disapprove, but will kick anyone who calls her 'Natters' (childhood shortening of an ex-colleague of DH's).

My NCT group had a Tilly, Lily and Millie ... Tilly was the given name in that case.
