ANOTHER BABY NAME DILEMMA

loopyredangel · 04/03/2007 21:51

We have just found out we are pregnant with our second child!!!! I have a name for a boy - Jack, but for a girl I am totally stumped, I always liked the name Amber, but I have gone off it recently, and quite like the name Tilly, but my husband doesn't like it, he quite likes the name Mia or Maya, and Grace has popped up a few times, but there are so many Graces' around. We wanted something a bit different for a girl. What do you think? Personally I quite like Tilly!

Is the peach just as in peachy or a real surname? (still loving the book btw)

I like names to be just names - if you are callinf her tilly, then just tilly, not short for (like prince harry being short for whatever)

PeachyClair · 04/03/2007 23:43

Its real actually

Flamesparrow · 04/03/2007 23:44

Was just nosey!

PeachyClair · 04/03/2007 23:46

LOL_ someone (peachygirl) named her daughter Peach last week (middle name) after her surname, but I married into it. Bizarrely, DS1 has my maiden ane as his middle name- is that getting common then?

Glad you're enjoying the book. I'm onto Advanced Aspies now LOL!

loopyredangel · 04/03/2007 23:49

Hubby quite likes Maya-Grace but his favourite is still Amber! I am leaning more towards Maya-Grace! Hmmm decisions, decisions!

Flamesparrow · 04/03/2007 23:49

I considered calling DS my maiden name - purely because I liked it as a name... DH hated it though, and now he is here it really didn't suit.

Is there a #3 on the way? (Is it #3?!?) Have I missed something?!?!?!?!

I'm still in that "i dunno" place with dd...

catASTROPHE · 05/03/2007 00:01

Loopy, I like all your names, they are really pretty. We thought of them for DD as well (Grace, Maya, Milly , Tilly!) and rejected them on grounds of 'too many around', and 'maybe not cute on a 40 year old'!

Anyway, DD is Lucia, and we call her Luie
Had DS been a girl, we had thought of

Matilda/Tilly
Amelia or Amelie /Milly
Ilya/Ily

(See a theme energing here...?)

I also like Rose, Lilly, Anna, Poppy and Emma

nathaliea · 05/03/2007 00:19

what do you think of the name Shyli ?
and what about Emalina?

I still think Maya is a top name. I get a lot of positive reactions wherever i go. When i travelled in central america people couldn't beleive my name is Maya, they have a whole people called the Maya and they thought it was fantastic that that was my name.

katelyle · 05/03/2007 00:32

5 think it's a good idea to register the child with the full name - but use the shortyened form. That way, if she gets to be prime minister, she can be Matilda, but for every day sh can be Tilly, I'm a great believer in giving choices.

pearlsasinger · 05/03/2007 00:39

I like all your names, especially Tilly. However, I know it's very popular at the moment so don't expect her to be the only one in the class.I've got a Violet and my next dd will be a Pearl....

I also love

Iris
Iolanthe
Tabitha
Jemima
Missy
Lula

I don't see a problem with people having short and sweet nicknamey sounding names when they are older, after all Tony Blair goes by the shortened version of his name, and many other politicians do the same, again Bill (Clinton). Betty Boothroyd etc

ScottishThistle · 05/03/2007 00:42

I don't think it makes any difference what name is actually on your Birth Certificate, if you like a short version of a name why put the whole name on just incase your child's a Judge/Politician...surely if they don't like their short name they can change it to whatever they like!

My Cousin's gone by his middle name most of his life!

I'm not fussed on the 'illy' names myself (Milly, Tilly, Lily etc)but each to their own.

The name i like for this baby (which i am sure is a girl, if not, i have no name!) is Gwen. It's old fashioned but feminine, doesn't rhyme with anything rude and can't be shortened.

I have no idea what to call it if it's a boy

catASTROPHE · 05/03/2007 14:48

but it can't be shortened to anything...as you said...but why is thata good thing? I like shortened pet names myself.

It is pretty though.

Flamesparrow · 05/03/2007 15:12

I like Gwen - liked Beth too but having cousins called Gwen & Beth it wasn't to be.

If you have given a name, I don't see why people want to shorten it - people always shorten DH's and its just not him. The amount of times people ask me I call DD Bron or Bronny (Bronwyn), and I just look at them blankly and say "No." Its not her name - she has lots of non-name related pet names so I leave her real one alone (except for calling her B very occasionally).

lizziemun · 05/03/2007 16:34

DetentionGrrrl i wouldn't be to sure that it wont be shorten once at school. My uncle called Ian but everyone calls him "e".

I have been watching these name threads with interested as we have no idea what to call bump if it a girl.

DD was only called her name because it was the only one we could agree on.

PurpleLostPrincess · 05/03/2007 17:29

We haven't thought of a boys name yet but I've always liked 'Harmony' or 'Melody'. This time, DH really likes the name 'Liloo/Lelou' (sp could be any way?) from the film "The Fifth Element". I think its beautiful and I'm looking forward to seeing if it will fit the face as such!

fryalot · 05/03/2007 17:31

lizziemum - my dp was called Ian precisely because it can't be shortened. He gets "e" and also "in" It's only a little name, but still two syllables!

My dd2 is called Ann and whilst you can't shorten it, you can lengthen it, so she gets Annie

Hulababy · 05/03/2007 17:33

I love the name Tilly, and if I were to have a second female child I would use this name, although would put Matilda as her full name.

I think all the names you mention are rather pretty

Hulababy · 05/03/2007 17:36

My name can't be shortened and I didn't like that when I was at school and all my friends had shortned nicknames!

I never though DD's name would be shortened, but it is!

tortoiseSHELL · 05/03/2007 17:42

I would definitely go for the longer version and then shorten at home, so Matilda, = Tilly. I also like Harriet, shortened to Hattie!

PurpleLostPrincess · 05/03/2007 17:46

My name is Tyrinna and I sometimes get it shortened to 'Ty' which I'm not a big fan of but on the whole, people can't shorten it...

(not suggesting you should use that by the way!)

PurpleLostPrincess · 05/03/2007 17:48

My dd is Connie and sometimes people shorten it to Con but generally she is 'Nonnie' in our house lol! She is Connie on her birth certificate too and not Constance as some people assume.

ds is Joshua and everybody except me calls him Josh - I just can't bring myself to call him that!

NorksBride · 05/03/2007 17:50

I know 1 x Mia, 2 x Grace and 3 x Tilly. No Ambers or Maya's.

As for Jack, there are 4 in our Reception class.

Matilda, with Tilly as a shortened name is lovely, she could also become a very grown-up Tilda in latter years.

loopyredangel · 05/03/2007 22:17

Hmm interesting, maybe I could compromise and go with Amber-Maya or Maya-Amber!!!! That way we are both happy!
