Unusual names

I'm thinking of some unusual names for baby and can't decide whether it would be a blessing (being individual) or a curse (forever having to repeat it/spell it)? Any advice/experience y ou gals can give me?

My name is Welsh so isn't all that common outside Wales, but there were 3 of us in my class at Secondary school and we were referred to as name B, nameT and nameL (or Brown, Thomas and Lloyd) which wasn't all that nice.

Have to say I love
Elsie
Esme
Ruth
Noah
and
Frankie
but personally don't like Gruff.

My friends daughter is Esme and her son is Noah.

I've always loved Ruth, don't know why, just have since I was small and read The Naughtiest Girl in the school book and there was a Ruth in it. I would like to be called Ruth though, not sure I'd name my aby it, no reason just one of those things.

i also like Olive for a little girl - how about that Bibiboo. My friend called her DD that and it REALLY suits her, I think it's fab.

Twinkie · 29/06/2004 14:46

Love all of yours except Gruff - is a funny word for a parp in our house sometimes.

Mabel is cute too and Maeve.

Kids that I know are

Harriet
Harry
Oscar (which I love)
Thomas
Ella
Noah
Freya
Millie (Emilia)
Olivia
Oliver
Elliot
Allesandro

DS will eb called Max (but its a secret so don't tell DP I told you )

busybee123 · 29/06/2004 14:48

we had loads of trouble with boys names...i liked Harvey and Blake. dh hated them. we ended up having 2 boys and a girl. dd was going to be olivia but we changed our mind

Bibiboo · 29/06/2004 14:53

Guess I'm on my own with Gruff then (pronounced Griff) as dh hates it too.
Any of you letting older children have an input into names?

Not many people in our family liked the names we chose for our kids. we have Max (middle name James after DH dad), Abigail (middle name Rebecca), and Ethan (middle name Kevin after my dad)....i love their names

sweetkitty · 29/06/2004 15:42

We're going to have an Abigail (shortened to Abbie) it is the only name both DP and I could agree on.

I honestly quite like Blake remember when he's growing up none of his friends will know about Dynasty of Blake 7 and it will only be older people who make the connection (like me)!

Twinkie · 29/06/2004 15:44

Noooooo Bibiboo - DD is going to call baby either Benjemeeeen, Blue Flower, Red Flower, Buzz or Leaf or Tree!!

binkie · 29/06/2004 15:49

Blake does take a moment, dinosaur - but really I think to do with it seeming rather grown-up for a newborn (had same feeling once when introduced to a 3 wk old called Tony). If once he's born (do you know he's a he?) if it looks like the name belongs to him, then I can see a boy really growing into it.

Can I guess there might be a tyger tyger connection?

Twinkie · 29/06/2004 15:50

Binkie - ROFL - hello this is Tony - he he he he he!!

Bronze · 29/06/2004 16:07

bibiboo
after reading your post Myfanwys slightly spoilt for me too. If its a girl though we'll still stick with it.
I think girls can cope with unusual names btter than boys and have stuck to 'normal' names boys wise. I've always has problems getting people to spell my name right but then my Dad is called Jonathan and its amazing the amount of people who cant get that right either. I think whatever name a child has people will always find a (maybe slightly cruel) nickname to call them for example my husband Steve who was called Ken at school after barbies boyfriend (apologies to any Ken lovers)
Bron

Gem13 · 29/06/2004 16:14

Re Tony - Was sitting on a bus in deepest Somerset about 15 years ago and a beautiful toddler was grinning at me from the seat in front.

'Kenneth, sit down' said the grandmother...

Fio2 · 29/06/2004 16:15

Are you thinking of Bronwyn? I like that!

I wanted Bridie if ds had have been a girl. Unfortunatly his name is quite common but people pronounce it wrong grrrrrrrr

DD doesnt have an unusual name but it is one that is not used much now so isnt common, but very pretty

Bibiboo · 29/06/2004 16:18

I think you're right Bron. There was a boy in my school whose surname was Neal, and SOMEHOW the boys came up with Neal, Wagon Wheel and he became (and still is as far as I know) called Wagon. And he's got to be about 35 by now!

hi all, was lurking and had to post... agree with unusual girls names, does anyone like Seren (sp?) i think it's welsh for star but it also reminds me of serene. Called ds sean as the only word it seemed to rhyme with was prawn but have since found myself calling him "sean the prawn" I am such a bad mother!!!!

bzhmum · 29/06/2004 16:36

if i have a boy i want to name it Malo, but my DP prefers Iolo.Iolo is Welsh, Malo is Breton. Malo is also impossible to mis-spell/mispronounce (I should think)
Please fell free to offer feedback, I would like to knoew the opinion of non-breton/welsh people

bzhmum · 29/06/2004 16:37

really like seren

marialuisa · 29/06/2004 17:20

DD was called Seren throughout my pregnancy because me and DH met in Seren Las, doesn't go with our surname so not useable though.

BZHmum-I think I prefer Iolo but possibly 'cos it's familiar IYSWIM.

We know a 3 year old called Keith Harold Brown. I think that's very cruel. Most popular names at DD's nursery are Madeleine and Amelia for girls, Louis (french pronunciation) and Max for boys.

nikcola · 29/06/2004 17:23

dd is called shireen is that unusual??

Twinkie · 29/06/2004 17:37

Ooohh like Jonty Dino!!

bzhmum - they call him Malo yello!! - sorry immediatly came to mind thinking about horrid nicknames!!

CountessDracula · 29/06/2004 17:39

bzhmum how is Malo pronounced? May-lo or Mah-lo?

If the latter may get spelt Marlow! If May-lo, sounds a bit like J-LO

Nice name anyway.

Iolo - again how is it pronounced?

Bibiboo · 29/06/2004 17:52

Love Iolo, think it's a very nice name, not sure about Malo though. I loved Milo until the Tweenies put paid to that!

OP posts:
Twinkie · 29/06/2004 17:53

I like Milo but sisters baby was called Miles so can't use that really!!
