Unusual names

I'm thinking of some unusual names for baby and can't decide whether it would be a blessing (being individual) or a curse (forever having to repeat it/spell it)? Any advice/experience y ou gals can give me?

My name is Welsh so isn't all that common outside Wales, but there were 3 of us in my class at Secondary school and we were referred to as name B, nameT and nameL (or Brown, Thomas and Lloyd) which wasn't all that nice.

SM it's not the name I don't like, just the person

Twinkie · 30/06/2004 13:20

Just makes me think of the gorilla - mind you a man with gorilla like tendancies could be fun!!

Is Enola Gay the bomb carrying aeroplane or something like that - get mixed up or maybe its a boat??

I like Florence as I like Flossy or Floss and I like Stanley too but not too sure whether that sounds common or like an old man??

Anyway Max is Max so no point looking at other names!!

This is fun AND I LIKE BOO!!!!

busybee123 · 30/06/2004 13:24

nice name twinkie!!! i have a Max....great isnt it??

dinny · 30/06/2004 13:26

I love the name Thomasina. DH hates it. My next child's middle name will be Bibi (if a girl).

busybee123 · 30/06/2004 13:28

do any of you lot hate your name? i hate mine.....wierd to me!!! i hate my mother for giving me my name and have even considered changing it by deed poll

spacemonkey · 30/06/2004 13:30

I don't think I could saddle a child with the name Boo, although it is very cute, what if they want to be a prison governor or something similarly serious when they grow up?!

Nimme · 30/06/2004 13:38

I have an unusual first name and surname which I wouldn't wish on anybody - too much explaining and spelling. Perhaps if it was really easy to tell if boy or girl not so bad - and definitely short.....

CountessDracula · 30/06/2004 13:39

Busybee what is your hated name?

busybee123 · 30/06/2004 13:42

CD don't laugh.........Bryony

spacemonkey · 30/06/2004 13:43

Bryony is a nice name!

busybee123 · 30/06/2004 13:44

god I HATE IT!!!!

marthamoo · 30/06/2004 13:49

If one really wants to pick unusual names for one's child one might consider...

Derek
Maureen
Joan
Mavis
Brian
Dwayne
Graham

Whay are some old names fashionable again, but others not? Like - Mabel, Maisie, Daisie all popular again but how many people would consider Ivy or Doris?

CountessDracula · 30/06/2004 13:49

Oh I had such a lovely friend called Bryony, I like the name myself

CountessDracula · 30/06/2004 13:49

Someone on here was going to call their baby Doris a few months ago.

Lonelymum · 30/06/2004 13:55

My boys all have unusual Irish names (some not so unusual any more but there you go). Our only Irish connection is through my dh's family - Irish Australians. Dh has an Irish name and I really like them, but even so, we had no real reason to give Irish names but did it anyway. I have no regrets and I like the fact that two out of three of my boys are not very likely to come across anyone with the same name - anyway, not in England. My dd, on the other hand, accidentally was given a rather common name and I now bitterly regret it as you hear her name everywhere and not always from nice sounding people. I can't persuade her to adopt her middle name which is much prettier and less common.
So my advice would be to go with the unusual name, especially as a Welsh name would reflect your own heritage. If dh had been Welsh Australian, I would happily have gone for Welsh names. I always used to plan to name my first son Gwyn!

spacemonkey · 30/06/2004 13:56

when my sister was a health visitor, she knew a family with a baby called BACARDI

also heard of a sauvignon and an argos the other day

CountessDracula · 30/06/2004 13:58

ARGOS? oh dear.

Do you think her mum went into labour then had to wait for the moron in the purple t shirt to fester around downstairs for 45 mins to produce a badly-made baby?

fisil · 30/06/2004 13:58

Twinkie - I love Stanley! That's ds' middle name. I think it has that old man coolness about it!

spacemonkey · 30/06/2004 13:58

GUFFAW CD

Lonelymum · 30/06/2004 14:09

Re names that seem too old for a baby: recently came across a baby boy called Trevor. Had real difficulty keeping my shock to myself (in fact, I didn't)

Fio2 · 30/06/2004 14:10

lol at trevor. kwym

Twinkie · 30/06/2004 14:13

CD - DP always says stop being a Doris when I am being thick - not sure why but I couldn't call a little kid Doris because of that!!

I do like Stanley Fisil but not as much as Max - mas is boyish and uncomplicated and cute I think.

DD has a quite uncommon name I don't know many other but we call her * the Donkey for some reason - although I don;t know any donkeys with that name!!

marialuisa · 30/06/2004 14:15

I quite like iris. Sure Jude Law has a DD called Iris.

spacemonkey · 30/06/2004 14:21

I like Iris and Ivy

And Ruby, Gloria and Barbara

CountessDracula · 30/06/2004 14:22

my dog is called Ruby
